She does not just talk about elevating her fellow women runners; she elevates them. And they win.
this article made me cry lol, thank you to @rachaeldee for sharing it with me yesterday :)
There’s nothing quite like a sunrise over the track… 😍
Today, with a time of 2:26:53, Shalane Flanagan won her first major marathon and became the first American woman to win the NYC Marathon since 1977. Her facial expression says it all. I watched the race on my phone at work this morning, and may or may not have been cheering and crying while I did so. I am so, so proud of her and happy for her. What an incredible race!
“Sometimes we don’t realize the moment when we feel like dreams are taken away that actually there’s some delayed gratification down the road. I think it was a blessing that I got injured this past winter and I came here full of energy and motivation and desire to put on the best performance of my life.” - Shalane after the race

Sometimes after dinner I eat a sleeve of Oreos. Last Wednesday, I was craving Cheetos so I drove to the store and bought myself a bag. When I put peanut butter on my toast, I give myself a generous dollop and don’t worry about the calories. My food is my fuel and I refuse to stop living life because I’m too scared to eat. I am not the stereotypical “running body type.” I have fat. I have cellulite. Yet I still was able to win this race by nearly an entire minute. Girls ask me constantly how I eat and what I do to fuel, the answer is simple: I am mindful of my cravings and kind to myself. I’m a normal person and I live my life to the fullest. I don’t count my calories or weigh my food anymore. I’m also in the absolute best shape of my life. By no means am I saying that I’m a superstar runner or that I couldn’t improve in many areas, but to any of the runners on here who have messaged me saying they wish they could be as fast as me or that they look up to me: all it takes is a undying love for the sport, an unreal work ethic, and a relentless heart. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
