      "yes! of course it's       alright."

          the kitten meows through the bars           and she can't help the giggle that           escapes her. she turns and opens           the cage door, pulling out the cat.

     "she's beautiful, isn't       she? no one wants       to adopt her because       of that silly bad luck       superstition."

          she shakes her head sadly and           cocks her head to the side with           a small frown. then she tilts her           head up and smiles. petting the           small feline gently.

[ the nitty gritty ]

                    “were those just wings that jumped out behind you?”

just when you think you’ve seen everything, a person sprouts wings. crazy.

                    “that’s a killer costume,”

she said, trying to be as casual as possible, trying to ignore the fact that it probably wasn’t a costume,  those were actual wings- actual real, live wings.

                    "wicked cool."

and if those were actual wings- well,  how? people didn’t have wings, they just didn’t, and even a crazy genetic mutation wouldn’t be that drastic.

                    "i mean, halloween’s not for another week,                     but still, wow, you must be all set.”

          she hasn't completely grasped the           concept of halloween, you see. so           there's a beat and then her confused           look disappears.

     "halloween, yes, this       is part of my costume,       mhm."

          she's a terrible liar, the tone of her           voice hitched just a bit, rubbing her           nose and glancing to the left while           she speaks.

     "i, uhm, i am being       an angel for halloween,       i'm still working on       rest of the costume,       yes."
