the boy admired her as she began the baking process, entranced by how naturally it came to her and how happy she seemed. her question snapped him out of his thoughts. “hmm? oh, yeah,” reese chuckled lightly. “funny that you mention it, really. i got some mystery cupcakes and i was watching scary movies the day before so part of me was uber paranoid and thought someone was trying to poison me or something. but nah, they weren’t poison. they were delicious,” he smiled at the memory. “how about you? i’m sure you had like, a billion gifts, right?” reese wanted the answer to be no, not a billion. he didn’t want to feel inferior,  although he knew he was since he hadn’t sent anything due to over contemplation which led to a missed opportunity. however, he also didn’t want her to say she got nothing. she deserved better. 

the sudden yet not unexpected knock on the front door startled reese. he jumped out of his chair and ran to answer it, but stopped along the way to adjust a few things here and there. he wanted everything to be perfect, although he wasn’t sure why. it was just dulce, after all. they’d been friends forever so a little mess wouldn’t be impolite and two friends having a sleepover wouldn’t be uncomfortable. but again, it was dulce. dulce who, to his shock and delight, he had grown feelings for. and he wanted to impress her with a perfect environment for their sleepover. he had a few snacks already prepared, as well as ingredients for more. he had his finest collection of movies laid out carefully on the floor next to the sleeping bag he would be using, since he wanted her to take the more comfortable option. reese rehearsed exactly what to say before taking a deep breath and a quick look in the mirror and opening the door with a welcoming and warm smile. “hey, you !” he greeted before losing his flow for a second upon seeing how cute she looked. “come in !”

“ a little stingy, aren’t you ?? you wouldn’t even spare some room under that cover for a cold little cat ?? ” he pouted, before changing into a cat and blinking up at her.
