Birth, Death, and Rebirth is not what it seems when it comes to inexperienced shapeshifters.
the body needs time to fully grasp its shapeshifting abilities, there is so much that takes place with the changes - how one form breaks down to turn into another. in some aspects there is a decay in the process, one body has lived and it reaches a state of death, it enters decomposition, dust and fluids that must reshape into another form.
sometimes the shifts are not that drastic , sometimes the changes are internal, change of skin colour, hair, eyes, then there is replacing an organ or adding one, sometimes these subtle changes are done unconsciously. sometimes there is nothing that changes in the insides but a only a warping of anothers' vision to make it seem that there is shapeshifting occuring, as they say : projections.
those of the wholly physical shifting: perhaps the body is trying to compensate, or there is an emotional situation where the body can't decide what to do so in the chaos, an extra liver or all the organs are atrophied. yes , it has happened where a shapeshifter had managed to kill themselves accidentally because they were unable to revive their organs.
of course not all shapeshifters shapeshift the same way, the differences are as obvious as bananas and apples.
these situations and shapeshifting scenarios variate from person to person, creature to creature. some are fully in control even at birth, as instinctive as making a choice to clap hands.
some need to learn steps throughout their lives, sometimes their shapeshifting abilities only manifest when they've reached a certain age and sometimes the choice of whether having the chance to learn is stripped away. that's when events can turn beyond horrific for the shapeshifter and the those trying to unlock skills or tamper with their bodies.
sometimes for a shapeshifter, mind and body are not in one place, not a team and it is the most important event of a shifter's life to make the mind and body as one team otherwise the other party, the soul, could encounter catastrophic consequences. an entirely different magical mayhem.
the body is forced to change in ways it never had before or had the option of realizing it could. turmoil would cause inadvertent designs and shifts.
sometimes a more horrid result: body parts fail to return to their original state, a part of the body dies and is unable to be revived or the body is broken down and more than one body is formed, thus a clone. sometimes the change into one form to another doesn't complete come forth and there is a hybrid or a mix-match of learned forms.
the nightmare of having their minds,bodies, souls, and abilities used against them is a reality. a very high chance of it, given how so few the shapeshifters really are.
even more so...those of an unintentional demonic origin.
