I tend to have strong opinions about movies. I look for character development, plot and something original. And when it comes to books vs movies, I'm usually on the side of books. Books are much richer, have better character development and have a fuller story that isn't limited to an hour and a half to two hours.
But I still go to movies that are adapted from books because I like to compare/contrast. I'm always impressed when a movie is close to a book plot-wise.
Unfortunately, the movie adaptation of Hayley Kiyoko's novel Girls Like Girls missed the mark entirely.
I understand this is a popular song with a well known music video and following, but there was so much cut from the book.
SPOILERS AHEAD
First of all, while the book does focus on Coley falling for Sonya, there's a much bigger plot: Coley's Mom committed suicide before the book begins and as such, Coley is sent to live with her Dad Curtis, a Father she says left her when she was young. She's dealing with the pain of her Father never being around when she was young, issues of abandonment and guilt over not being able to stop her Mother's suicide. A big chunk of the book is Coley working through these issues.
The book is also narrated by Coley, so we get to see these issues and these strong emotions play out in real time. Coley is hurting and as such, is also lashing out at everyone. The book also portrays her as being intelligent and unwilling to put up with drama. She appreciates authenticity.
We also get to see a little of Sonya's inner turmoil over liking Coley play out in the book, mostly through her live journal page. Sonya may be dramatic, but she's dealing with teen angst and a Mother with high expectations.
The friends play a bigger role as well, specifically Trenton, SJ and Alex. Alex has a side hustle selling pot in the book; Trenton is a bigger asshole than in the movie and while SJ starts off being aloof, she warms up to Coley. Trenton is watered down in the movie; Alex isn't shown selling or even smoking pot and SJ is relegated to background status.
The movie flies through the book, relegating certain bigger scenes to montages, which works in some instances, but not others. For example, the book has the friends hiding in poison oak to escape the police after a barn party, which culminates in Coley and Sonya rubbing calamine lotion on each other. This is shown as part of a quick montage in the movie and only has Trenton referencing the poison oak incident.
The book has more interactions between Coley and Curtis, as they try to work through their grief, but is only touched on in the movie and there's no big dramatic moment where Coley saves Sonya from the oncoming train like in the book.
The scenes at the restaurant towards the end of the book where Coley finally starts to heal are glossed over as well, which I think is a shame because not only does it touch on found family, it also shows a healthy, mature same-sex relationship between Coley's co-worker and his boyfriend.
While i understand you can only squeeze so much into an hour and 35 minute movie, to me the movie lacked plot, substance, and any significant character development.
What I can't figure out though? Hayley Kiyoko wrote the song, directed the music video for the song, wrote the novel and directed the movie adaptation. Why cut so much of it out? Better yet, why water the movie down so much?

I donât usually do mystery boxes because I donât know what iâm going to get, but I decided to take a chance on The Mini Brands: Books series 2. It did not disappoint. I might also be hooked; I really want to try for the mini bookshelf.
âBut Andre had no interest in women, which lead to worried murmurs until it became clear that Andre did not have any interest in men either. Andre found people exciting, and wonderful to be friends with, and he had no interest in romance with anyone. This was not an absence from his life and it was nothing he regretted for a single breezy, smiling moment. His life was not better or worse for who he was, his life was the only version of himself he could be.ââThe Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home-Joseph Fink And Jeffrey Cranor. Page 90.

âThere are two types of people you will meet in your life. One will run a finger down the index of who you are and jump straight to the parts of you that peak their interest. The other will take his or her time reading through every one of your chapters and maybe unfold corners of you that inspired them most. You will meet these two people; it is a given. It is the third that youâll never see coming. That one person who not only finishes your sentences, but keeps the book.â
âMy most personal moments with Francine were close-upsâthe bend of a knee or a shifting hand that caught my eyeâŚthe arc of her cheek, the sun on her hair, the dance of the shadows across her back. These moments are liked picked flowers that I arrange in various bouquets and call art. Today the moments are still alive to meâtomorrow they may be nothing more than memories. So I paint as fast as I canâŚbefore the bouquet dies. Painting helpsâit keeps things real. Itâs what I canât paint that slips away and haunts me. The sound of her voice. The touch of her hand. The way she smelled after a bath. Every now and then a trace of these things in someone else reminds me that I still compare everyone to Francine. I guess I always will.â

When it comes to the Frozen franchise, Iâm not an Anna fan. I feel sheâs needy, codependent and insecure. Especially in the second movie. While I know a lot of that stems from what happened in the first movie, sheâs never been my favorite character.
However. This may have changed my mind:
Breaking Boundaries takes Anna away from Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven and puts her in her own story along with new friend Mari.
Afraid Anna doesnât have much of a purpose in Arendelle, her and Mari set off to find out what theyâre good at. They try baking, working at Oakenâs Shop and being ice harvesters. They get in some trouble, but are able to think on their feet and solve problems on their own. Both women are presented ss capable, independent and resourceful.
Olaf, Kristoff and Sven appear in minimal roles and even Elsaâs own adventure takes a backseat, giving Annaâs positive traits of warmth, humanity, friendliness and fearlessness a chance to shine.
And, if youâre looking for a ship that isnât Elsanna, thereâs always Anna/Mari:
And finally, I would rather read this than Disneyâs Frozen Adventures comics. Donât get me wrong; Frozen Adventures is cute, but it doesnât hold s candle to Breaking Boundaries.
Look at us. Here we are in this amazing circumstance. Maybe someday, when we're long gone, people will talk about us. And when they do, our lives will be just stories to them. If they tell their children, we will become fairytales and, after awhile, people will doubt we really existed at all. But, here we are, aren't we? In this amazing circumstance.
So during last yearâs Comic Con, I got a free copy of the book Judy Moody: Book Quiz Whiz:
What I didnât realize was it was an advanced, uncorrected reader proof copy. Which is incredibly cool, because the book is very rough in terms of illustrations:
And some pages donât have illustrations yet:
And nothing in the back of the book showing the rest of the series:
The story itself is super cute and fun. Judy Moody and her friends are studying up for their âFirst Ever Book Quiz Blowoutâ and thus are reading a myriad of childrenâs books to study up. Everything from classics like Charlotteâs Web to The Princess in Black (which Iâve never heard of). They call themselves The Bookworms.
But will the bookworms be able to beat their competition? Youâll have to read and find out!

Many of us are looking for more ways to enjoy our time at home in these stressful circumstances. Some of us have turned to books. But how can we make sure we get the most out of them?
