I'm nine chapters into The Tyranny of Faith and enjoying Vonvalt's very valid crashout, but something that has bothered me so far is the implications regarding the development of his relationship with Helena, more specifically the direction it's taking.
I really thought that after that very unfortunate moment in the first book (which she quite literally said she was thinking of Vonvalt while having sex with someone else), and the subsequent events that led to some emotional damage, this unsavory crush would be dismissed. but alas, that’s not what happened, in just these few chapters we had at least two moments where other characters insinuated (more like teasing but still there in the text) that the nature of their relationship may become romantic. and then there was that very uncomfortable (to me) scene in her bedroom that thanks to Nema was cut short. And the worst part is that, after all that, yet another character makes a comment about her being "Vonvalt's daughter" or some shit like that and i was immediately thrown off. like, wtf???
It's starting to seem like the author has absolutely no idea how to handle this relationship or where to take it, and that sucks because their mentor-apprentice dynamic is one of my favorite parts of the book and it works so well! And I really hope this relationship remains platonic and that this strange tension between them ends soon, because I'm already feeling uncomfortable with the insinuations, considering he's kind of "adopted" her. I don't know if I could continue reading the series, or at least feel connected to it, if this ridiculous plot actually happens.
I just started the series and was worried about what you just said happening. If this turns romantic I will be joining you in your crashout.
I’m currently reading the last book and yeah… unfortunately, the author has committed to this
