At the question, Linhardt stares on with blank eyes devoid of any interest or amusement.  He knows precisely what Ferdinand is insinuating, but when replies, he tilts his head and his voice rises to feign curiosity, 

riveasperity​​ said: “ well, it’s possible to be right and foolish. ”  👌

It had been a close call, complete with an ambush targeting a certain mage set far from the rest of the group.  And while the battle was over, Linhardt is still pale and a bit distant-- Byleth’s remark breaks whatever tension had held him.  

He can’t help but to sputter a short laugh.  

Though when he speaks, he shakes his head.  His voice is still uncertain and tinged with exhaustion, “ In this instance, perhaps.  In the same vein, however, it’s just as likely to be foolish and dead. ”

“     no,   i cannot do that !   it will make me sound foolish and insipid,   like i do not know anything.   and he will get all smug about it,   like he always does.     ”     ferdinand cannot resist the thorny poke at his sometimes-friend.   as far as they have come,   the nagging burrs of their past still itch and cling on occasion. 

he loosens the irritation free with a bounce of his shoulders,   and his expression drops to something of crystalline intent.     “     perhaps i am not making myself clear cut.  i am thinking more  ――  i want to impress him.     ”

At first, Linhardt shakes his head to disagree that asking questions would look at all foolish-- but the moment Ferdinand clarifies what he’s asking for, Linhardt halts, mouth slightly open and brows raised. 

He draws a hand up to his chin in a slow show of consideration, though there’s nothing left to consider with the evidence at hand.  After a beat, he speaks plain, meeting Ferdinand’s eyes with a steadfast gaze of his own, “ Ah, I see now. ” 

Also thinking of this, because Linhardt spends so much of his time at the academy trying to enjoy what little is left of his free years and avoid thinking of his future.  So much of that is compounded with him worrying about his parents, because it will make things difficult for them and they’d probably be upset.  He probably hasn’t even mentioned wanting to do anything else (or if he has, it garnered a bad reaction and he never brought it up again).

Wizard

Linhardt starts to turn his head to the sound of someone approaching, his eyes continue to skim the document before him.  Though the moment he feels and hears Hubert, he smiles, "Ah yes, my apologies."

Ultimately, it's the movement of his hair and lips at his neck that dispel the last of his concentration.  A near instant blush warms his cheeks.  While it's an odd position, Linhardt angles himself to catch Hubert's lips in his own, and a content sigh escapes him.

Indeed, it's almost strange how close they've grown, given that there was once a day he’d quickly walk away if he heard Hubert approaching.  Years later, he now finds himself wanting to share every half-complete thought--  including those he hardy wants to admit to himself.  

After they part, he mulls over them as he considers how he might answer. His blush deepens.

“Hm. How quaint. Floating about at the whims of the currents sounds dreadful in my opinion, absolutely no control over what you achieve, or even where you might go.” Lorenz leans back onto his forearms, carefully crossing his ankles one over the other, prim as ever even in relaxation. “I would be more like a shark – graceful and efficient, which as luck would have it, are only two of my many fine qualities.”

“ Hmmm, you do have the look of one as well, with sleek hair and streamline features.  Though...”  Linhardt meanders with a drawn out yawn, speaking easily with every unfiltered thought--  “ I’ve read once that some sharks die once they stop moving. ”

“     well  …   ”      ferdinand hems,   pressing a nervous stretch the reaches all the way to the back of his heels.     “     it is just,   hubert is very skilled at magic.   and my arcane talents are not,   ahhh,   particularly cultivated.   they could be,   of course,   i have simply been focused on other things.   anyway,   we have been spending a great deal of time together lately,   and i was merely thinking   ――   that it might be nice if i could at least hold an informed conversation on the topic.     ”

“ Oh, is that all? ” Linhardt speaks with a light tone, surprised given how Ferdinand and Hubert were prone to bickering over the years. Yet now Linhardt watches Ferdinand, noting the the rare show of hesitation.  

How interesting...  “ A far more interesting conversation could still be had with Hubert as you are now, though-- it may even be more enjoyable for both of you.  I have my own theories regarding its relation with light magic, but nothing worth mentioning. ”
