I have a real philosophical question for yāall and I want to hear peopleās opinions on this so feel free to join in.
When does a human soul leave the body after catching a personality altering disease? Like with rabies, by like day 7 your brain is mush, you canāt do anything, canāt speak, canāt think, but your body acts violently towards any outside stimuli. Is your mind still in there, like just taking a backseat watching your body act.
Think about a zombie movie like 28 Days later, where itās an infection, theyāre not actually dead bodies reanimated. Those are living breathing people with a disease that causes them to act violently. The infection spreads almost instantly, like that scene where the dude just gets a single drop of blood in his eye and within a minute is going crazy. So itās not like the walking dead, thereās no fever, no living in agony, then you die and come back. With something like the rage virus, does your soul leave your body the second the virus takes over, or are you just in your head watching, not able to act? The bodies of those infected are still human, they donāt eat people for sustenance, they just attack people with their teeth out of pure rage. The infected donāt eat, they donāt drink water, so they eventually do die, due to starvation and their bodies shutting down. This indicates that the infected are still human and susceptible to human mortality, but when did YOU as a person actually die? When do you stop being you? Like are you just sitting around in that body suffering unable to control anything you do?
I think this would be a really cool concept space to explore. I feel like Warm Bodies explored some of this through more of a light-hearted romcom approach.
I think it also kinda depends on how one defines soul; is it just the collection of electrical impulses that create your consciousness, or is the soul a separate entity from the framework of electrical impulses and body that house them?
Like if we go off the concept that weāre just a collection of electrical impulses & hormonal responses, then maybe that gets disrupted and destroyed when diseases like rabies destroy the biological brain matter that house all of that. Thatās horrifying to think that whatever soul exists is only as resilient as the biology that contains it all.
Personally, I think it would be more horrifying to take a backseat, Sunken Place style, and watch your body act out on feral impulses.
Imma think on this today. I def know I have more to say, but I gotta think about it.
@amoisthobo hereās some more philosophical reading material if you wanna check it out.

This might be more on a tangent but the book After The Cure by Deidre Gould is really cool because it goes into the psychological (and legal) affects of those infected after theyāre cured and have to reintegrate into society.
Thatās a terrifying thought.. if theyāre able to be cured and brought back, then that means they (the person, their actual soul) was still in there somewhere and was able to be brought back after they were cured. What if they felt everything that went on while they were infected, they felt their body shutting down from hunger, their kidneys giving out from lack of water. Did they know what was going on, or were they like in a coma while their body was roaming around rotting and attacking people. Thereās so much to this.
Turning this always from one type of zombie to another, say you donāt have some crazy disease that makes you attack ppl and basically become a walking corpse, what about a voodoo zombie, thatās even more realistic. Say somebody hypnotizes you and never undoes their control over you. Are you still you?? Your soul is definitely still in your body, youāre not dead or even sick. Where does your mind go when you get hypnotized, where are you, within you????
The zombie theory is an interesting one. Iām certainly not an expert in the arena of spiritualism, but as someone who grew up in a culture that practiced a variation of the shamanistic belief system, it would be believed that the moment you felt fear during, for example, an attack by a rabid animal, your soul would have left your physical body in that moment of fear and that becoming ill would be a result of your soul having already left your body. That is why practices such asĀ āāsoul callingā exist, as a shaman, medicine man/woman, healer, or spiritual leader would perform a spiritual procedure in which they would travel to the spiritual plane and attempt to call your soul back to your physical body. The 2011 film, Insidious, works with the common beliefs and themes of spiritualism and the practice of soul calling, although I certainly wouldnāt consider the dramatization of something so widely culturally practiced an epitome of spiritualistic belief.Ā
As a psychology major, I donāt personally believe in hypnosis because it has indeed been debunked. However, my western mindset would then again probably be unable to truly comprehend the experience of a shaman, medicine man/woman, healer, or spiritual leader when they are in aĀ āhypnotic tranceā. But I suppose that if you were aĀ āvoodoo zombieā then those who believe in spiritualism would perhaps believe that your spirit is being trapped/controlled by a manipulator who either exists on the spiritual plane or knows how to travel in between realms whether they be malevolent or not, and your physical body therefore having no control over your actions.Ā
Food for thought.
