Wuthering Heights (2026) dir. Emerald Fennell
“the most happy”
So, after watching Lupita Nyong'o's interview about her role in Nolan's "Odyssey", I have to say, I couldn't be more disappointed in Hollywood. Believing you are the centre of the world and claiming to embrace differences, while rejecting and replacing different cultures, is just so ironic, and I dare say typical for American directors. Greek history and mythology has always been a subject of interest for producers, bringing millions in the film industry, and yet nothing feels original or even familiar to the greek eye. Of course it is impossible to know everything and bring a whole myth to life, but the least they can do is put a little effort in it. It is no longer a matter of historical accuracy, but a matter of respect; something neither the director or most of the actors in this movie have shown. Some of them even have the audacity to "cancel" Homer, for not giving the women extra screen time. Now we know who did their reading before auditioning for certain roles.🙄
As for the choice of casting Lupita Nyong'o as Helen, I am now more skeptical than ever. It is not about the color of her skin; it's because she's not Greek. It is not about her not being talented enough; it's because she doesn't understand Homer's work, and isn't interested in doing so. Beauty is subjective, and Helen's appearance cannot be determined by anyone who hasn't seen her. However, she was Greek. Not African, not Asian, not Scandinavian. And Greeks have their own beauty. Too bad Hollywood isn't good enough to fully grasp it...
