My ex-husband passed away last year. We were married for 7 years, but separated after 4, and we were very young when we split up. We had two children together, we each remarried and he had two more. His wife had one son, the same age as our son, when they met. Over the years, we were together for high school and college graduations, for grandbabies, birthdays, anniversaries -- all the occasions involving our children. My husband, his wife, he and I were together more often than you might think. I refer to my ex-husband's wife as my wife-in-law (don't tell her), and I like her.
Fast forward to now, a year after my ex-husband's death. I received an overnight envelope from my wife-in-law containing information about a life insurance policy on my ex-husband naming me as beneficiary. I remember suddenly exactly when we took it out when he was 22, and he never changed beneficiary. His widow sent a sweet note telling me she thinks it was his acknowledgement of our young lives. I think he just forgot to change it. Now I'm completing claim forms and paperwork to collect it, though it should be hers. From where I sit, this life is strange.
