It’s fucking disgusting, and it’s made worse when people ask for contact details, social media accounts, etc.

This was a time when I was going on 4chan and calling other women fuckmeat, and thinking of myself as being more pure and better than other women just for being a virgin. I thought women who had sex were mindless whores, sluts who deserved to be degraded, that they were born with empty brains and deserved to be used.

I was raised in a family where purity was seen as something to be idolized for women (but not for men), and I internalized that as part of my internalized misogyny.

My dad used to tell me that god wants women to be more pure than men, that it is part of our nature. My mother told me that sex is something for men and that women get nothing out of it. These are very real and very pervasive messages in our culture, even though they run contradictory to the liberal ideas about women needing to be constantly open to hookup culture and having sex with men in order to be valuable.

These things are two sides of the same coin–we shame women for not having sex, and we also shame women for having sex (and lesbians especially face lesbophobia for their attractions, which are invalidated and oppressed at every turn).

My experience with the “pure = value” side of the slut/prude dichotomy which is a tool of patriarchy to divide women might be extreme, but the idea that women get our value from purity is one half of the coin, one side of the double edged sword that is used to cut women away from forming our own narrative of sexuality. Lesbians are affected in an entirely unique way from het women, in that their sexuality is the most oppressed and violence is enacted on lesbians just for being with women, just for holding hands on the street.

But under patriarchy, no woman is allowed to write the narrative of her own sexuality. Hetero women are given a choice between patriarchal narrative of female sexuality, or nothing at all–and sometimes even violence, as men get angry when women exert our opinions about what is pleasurable for us, or critique their sexual techniques.

Patriarchy does not allow lesbians to write their own narrative in a very extreme way that makes lesbians uniquely oppressed compared to het attracted women, but neither does patriarchy allow for hetero attracted women to write a narrative of hetero sex that includes female pleasure and male attention to the clitoris.

Women of all kinds are silenced when we want to speak about sex from our perspective. Liberal sex positivism focuses on accepting the patriarchal narrative rather than forming a female centric version of sexual pleasure, and liberal sex positivity has no room for lesbians at all.

I feel like while we as radfems often unpack liberal sex positive culture and how it does in fact negatively affect women, as hookup culture is gross and unnatural, leading teens to think they are “demisexual” for having healthy desires for real intimacy, we also often ignore how the patriarchal narrative that women who are more “pure” have a higher value in society, and I think that deserves unpacking as well.

I know I am not the only woman to grow up with the idea that purity = value. Because that idea is pervasive in a society that worships father gods, where the ideal woman is a virgin who gave birth to a son without experiencing any pleasure for herself during conception–a mere acceptance as a vessel.

We should continue unpacking liberal sex positivity, but not at the expense of ignoring the other half of the double edged sword. The slut/prude dichotomy is a “divide and conquer” tactic and unpacking only half of it won’t lead to a unity among women. The idea that women who are more “pure” are more valuable also deserves to be unpacked as a part of internalized misogyny.
