Cueva de las Manos in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina is my favorite piece of art, though calling it a “piece” is perhaps misleading. It is a cave filled with hundreds of hand prints on the walls and ceiling, dated from 7,300 BCE to 700 CE. The hands were created by blowing pigments through bone pipes over one's hand, leaving a negative on the wall. Images of humans, guanacos, lizards, and geometric shapes are also found in the cave.

There are countless Tumblr posts about cave paintings connecting modern humans to those who lived thousands of years ago. Instead of writing another one, I'll leave you with this picture from my trip to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

But the horror... The horror was for love. The things we do for love like this are ugly, mad, full of sweat and regret. This love burns you and maims you and twists you inside out. It is a monstrous love and it makes monsters of us all.
