Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus, commonly known as either Elagabalus or Heliogabalus, was a Syrian member of the Severan dynasty and was Roman emperor from June 218 to March 222. At age 14, supported by the legions, he became emperor, and despite his young age his reign was known for sexual scandal and religious controversy. He married a slave and charioteer named Hierocles, in addition to marrying and divorcing five women. Contemporary writers mention that he spent a great deal of time crafting his personal appearance, wearing makeup and wigs before prostituting himself in temples, brothels, and the palace. In addition to his role as Roman Emperor, Elagabalus was also the high priest of the god Elagabal, to whom he created a large shrine on the Palatine Hill where he moved the most sacred relics of Roman religion, and to whom he made large sacrifices every dawn which some contemporaries suspected included the remains of young boys, in addition to the traditional cattle and sheep. Elagabalus’ sexual orientation and gender identity are the subject of debate for modern scholars, and as contemporary writers say that he “delighted to be called the mistress, the wife, the queen of Hierocles,” as well as offered money to contemporary physicians who could equip him with female genitalia, modern historians often view him as transgender or transsexual. Ultimately, the Praetorian Guard and the army who had supported him turned against him and he was assassinated at the age of 18. (x)
