Alex is training for improving storyboarding , so I suggested him to do 10 analyzes from 10 different sequences of movies, or introductions of character in a movie.

This exercise is of course not my invention. I have learnt it from my former head of story on Incredibles 2. What is specific is : He told me not to just draw composition shots, but to note every details, every tools which build every shots, from lighting, cam movement to sound fx.

I can certify, by far, that’s the most powerful exercise you can do to improve your storytelling. Much better than reading a storyboard book, much better than just watching 1000 movies.It is about being active in the thought, not just reading or watching something where you don’t think by yourself.

My personal improvement about this exercise is when you force yourself to make a conclusion from your notes (Who force you to coomunicate to somebody else what are your thought). It forces you to understand what you have learnt and to communicate it clearly.

So to be clear, it is not about describing the facade of the cake. It is about finding what are the ingredients in the recipe of the cake. And find out what are their effect in our feeling. So it is much complex that you think it is… I really recommend it anyway :) . at work and with friends we do the 100 or 200 movies challenge a year (new movies only)

Animation is cinema. So studying the best is storytelling is about studying live action movies. I suggest to watch many old movies, many foreign movies, not just US movies from the last 20 years. I suggest you to try filmstruck, very great netflix for classic movies, cheap https://www.filmstruck.com/us/ :D
