-- AMOS DE LEON is 38 years old and is a wilmington native. he became a pro tennis player at 16 years old and since then put his career over anything else in his life. he was always a free spirit, often found himself either training or enjoying life to the fullest. he got married at 29 years old but divorced his husband two years later bc he always preferred his career over creating a family and whatnot. which leads us to present time amos. at his age, playing is nearly impossible and he is having to face the fact that without tennis, he doesn't really know who he is. his answer to this has been to have some sort of identity crisis where all he does is party, drink and act out. so he's pretty much a mess and work in progress and is currently trying to figure his entire life out again. personality-wise: very extroverted, incredibly loyal when he cares, will find an excuse to fight anyone, indecisive, mischievous, doesn't take a lot of things seriously.

biography
Born into a beautiful loving family, Amos De Leon saw and understood what real love and family was from a very young age. He witnessed his dads’ love and learned to be a big brother to his younger sister, Armi. The four were inseparable and incredibly lucky to have each other. Daniel and Tony always provided structure and warmth in their home, but by far, what shaped Amos into the man that he would eventually turn into was the way they always told their children to follow their dreams.
From a very young age, Amos was what most people would consider a prodigy. The boy lived and breathed tennis the moment that his hand met a racket and they never separated. He was up and training before school hours, and then after school. He’d always been ambitious but when he became old enough to join tournaments, that was when his fathers knew that there was no going back.
Despite his passion, Amos struggled with the discipline of a sport that always expected the best from its athletes. He was a free spirit just like his younger sister, and while his brain always wanted to win, his heart was more into running around, loving life, playing around town with his best friend, Kian. Instead of choosing one way though, by the time that he became a teenager, Amos had mastered his schedule and time like a pro. He was going to make it to the pros, no matter what.
His first sponsor signed him during his senior year of high school and when graduation came and went, Amos never looked back. From then on, his life became all about tournaments, opens, competitions. He would train in Wilmington, call it home, but would travel incredibly often for tennis-related things. If you ask him, this physical distance from his family is what ultimately made him begin to lose himself a little bit, because this is when Amos began to put the game above anything else, including love.
He was 29 and at the height of his career when he met Asher, the heir to a famous sports brand and who would eventually become his ex-husband. They’d always had a toxic relationship where they couldn’t find balance between Asher never having to work a day in his life and Amos always wanting to work and get better to be able to keep winning. For Amos, it was a struggle to find the time and effort to be a husband. As much as he loved Asher, he always found himself feeling like it wasn’t enough.
Marriage felt a lot like something that he needed to check off a list and not what he’d seen as he grew up with his fathers. So, it was a surprise to no one when Asher filed for divorce two years after their wedding, as by then, everyone knew that Amos had been seeing other people and had left their shared home with the excuse of needing to do what was best for his career and marriage, clearly, wasn’t it.
Amos never let himself miss his ex-husband, instead, he found himself at one of the best moments of his career. He won the U.S Open twice, then the Australian Open and eventually, and finally, Wimbledon. His life went back to what he’d always been: parties, hookups, drinks, women, men, fancy events, vacations, but he always found the time to fly back home. There was nothing like a hug from his dads, a beer with Kian and Armi, his own bed and he would not change that, not even for a longer career.
What Amos never took into consideration when he was younger was that sports careers are shorter than average, even if he was a top earner and competitor, at thirty-eight years old, Amos can’t keep up. In fact, most tennis players retire in their early thirties and he’s managed to add years into a career that has very quickly gone downhill. It was like right after winning Wimbledon, he could barely win anymore. Sponsors have slowly started to pull out of their contracts in the past five years and most recently, his coach announced that this will be his last season coaching him and as much as he likes to act like it’s not affecting him, it is.
What once had felt like his perfectly crafted life, Amos has begun to realize that is nothing but empty titles, trophies and a fame that will surely disappear when he stops playing and although he wants to fight it, he knows that in a year’s time, his life will not be the same. He can count the people that he cares for with one of his hands and can’t even put a name to most people that he has hooked up with, the realization hit him that he doesn’t want to be alone.
So, instead of trying to fix things, Amos has fallen into silent suffering and masking it with his usual repertoire of throwing parties, drinking and hooking up. When he’s not doing these things, he is lounging around the country club or his house, feeling incredibly sad but acting like he’s living his perfect almost retired life as he wraps up what will be his last season on the courts.

Malia's brain short-wired. Was he in People Magazine? He couldn’t have. She would have noticed. This man was too ridiculous. So he was a total Ken - but People Magazine cute? She would've totally saved that issue and stared at it for way too long if he had been in there. Like seriously, who did this guy think he was with that smile and those jokes? Making her feel all butterfly-ish when she specifically put up a "No Butterflies Allowed" sign. And the worst part? She was starting to look forward to his silly comments. Two years of building walls and this goofball was out here acting like they were made of Jell-O. "You're such a liar … I would've remembered seeing your face in there," she said. She thought of him being home all day, reading spicy books in that sultry way. Bad idea. Very bad idea. "You're going straight for ACOTAR? Bold choice for a newbie reader."
Her heart went into overdrive when he spoke about wanting her number. She tried to focus on watching Leilani and Cece, but her thoughts kept drifting back to him. Talk about a sick joke. A cute single dad had to walk into her life and send things topsy-turvy. He just threw out them having a thing like he was talking about nothing important. It knocked the air right out of her lungs. She was freaking out - let's get that straight - but was also living for it. "Look at you having a high opinion of yourself … you're on your own there, Ken." He wasn't at all. She felt it, this connection. She didn't even have this kind of chemistry with James. Why was this blind date turning into an epic love at first sight moment? She needed to get it together, but her walls were crumbling faster every time he smiled her way. The scary part wasn't that she minded - it was that she kind of liked it. She checked him out - way too long - blinking her eyes to snap out of the trance sugar daddy Ken put her under. “Anyone ever told you how distracting you are? The kids could have raided the cotton candy stall and I wouldn’t have noticed.”
Amos watched her intently for a few seconds, only looking away to make sure that his attention was still on their children just a few steps away while they were playing and trick-or-treatin'. He didn't know Malia very well yet. That was the truth, but he also couldn't help but feel like they understood each other. It seemed to go beyond their sense of humor and more connected to how in sync they had been since their first meeting. "My face has been there. Several times." Amos responded as if she had lost her mind, but it wasn't a lie. He'd made the list a few times, even when he was younger. "I like a challenge. You don't think I can handle it?" He murmured, grinning gently back at her and definitely letting her know that he wasn't just talking about his reading challenge.
It was endearing, really, how much Malia seemed to want to fight the electric force that was passing between them. Amos couldn't blame her; it could be scary, not only that, but Amos ruined everything. He didn't say it out loud all the time, not to most people, but he wasn't sure of how to really be with someone. Whatever this was between them though, Amos could already tell it was special and something that he wanted to explore more so all he could do was smirk back at her, clearly trying to make it even worse for her. "So you want to friend zone me but then you decide I am very distracting? I don't think I can behave if you keep that up, Mal." His tone was teasing, but there was a lot of truth behind it. "It's going to be fun to watch you try to resist me though. I kind of like it."
She nodded along with him because it was very funny how life could throw the most insane curveballs and you could either hit it out of the park or miss and wonder for the rest of your life. It was obvious here that Amos had hit the ball out of the park with the way he was stepping up and trying to be there for Cece in the best way possible. “Maya and Cece have been friends since we got to town and it’s really nice to see her actually developing those bonds with people in this town, you know?”
Samira couldn’t help the smile at his words about the lawyer he was using for Kian’s case and nodded along with him, “yeah that’s important for sure. Sometimes in situations like these—having someone who actually is connected with the family makes all the difference,” she commented before taking a sip from the coffee cup in her hand before she heard his question and found herself giving him a casual shrug. “Yeah I mean—my focus is literally work and Maya, and luckily both of those seem to be going well so I can’t complain.” Except there were a lot of things that were feeling extremely stagnant in her life—but none of those things felt like problems she should or could unload on Amos, especially when he was dealing with enough as it was.
"I am very glad you two have adjusted so well." Amos told her slowly. It had been surprising that she'd made the move, after all, he always figured that the loss of her sister had made her stay away from Wilmington. But now he felt like Samira fit right into the small town, which always mattered when you made such a big move. "Thanks for meeting up with Cece and I, she really seems to enjoy her time with Maya and you're not bad company. Lately it feels like a lot of things are changing for me, for everyone really, you know?"
He let out a short laugh at Amos’ retirement comment, shaking his head as they entered the bar. “Grumpy dad advice? Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not exactly father material.” That must have been odd, realizing that everything changed overnight. “I’d say start with not dropping the kid on their head—that’s probably solid advice.” He settled onto a barstool, signaling the bartender. “There’s always gossip around, let’s just say this town’s been having quite the dramatic few months. The Todd family situation has everyone talking.” He paused, studying the other’s reaction carefully. “Macallan 18, neat,” he told the bartender before turning back to his companion. “Don’t let this get to your head, but I’m sure you’ll be okay with the whole fatherhood thing. Just don’t do anything that would hurt the kid. Pretty sure you’ve got that covered though.”
"Well, Axel, my kid is already walking age, so dropping her on her head isn't a priority anymore, but thanks for the solid advice there." Amos chuckled, thanking the bartender as they came back with their drinks of choice and asked them to put them both on his tab. "The Todd situation, the Kian situation. It's been an eventful year and we're still a few weeks out form New Year's." Amos admitted and then smirked back at his companion. "Look at you, almost being nice to me, wow." He teased. "Shivi would be proud of us. Do you think if we send her a selfie of us she might have a heart attack?"
"Do you think we'll traumatize Cece if we watch Gremlins with her? It's like my favorite Christmas movie." Amos asked playfully as he finished up the hot chocolate for all of them, eyebrows furrowed together. "If I watch the Santa Clause one more time I might throw up."

Malia gave him major side-eye at the compliment comment. "You're twisting my words! That was totally different," she said, trying not to grin like an idiot. This NOT flirting thing was getting dangerous - like eating-ice-cream-before-dinner dangerous. The way he kept catching her off guard with his comments had her feeling like a teenager again. This wasn’t what she didn't need right now. Or it's something she desperately wanted. No, nope, stop right there. She wasn't going to let her guard down just because some cute Ken dad with a killer smile knew how to make her laugh. "I did friend-zone you. You’re cute but not THAT cute..." Her brain needed to chill with all this overthinking. But when his hand touched her back, hello electric. Even her breath caught in her throat.
Fairy smut talk saved her - his face was giving pure scandalized vibes. "You heard me. I didn’t stutter.” She scrunched her nose and moved closer to whisper the next bit. “I didn't want to scare you off with the spicy book stuff right away. If you want to know, you’ll have to read and find out.” She grinned and gave him a wink. “For real? Cece's mom writes romance? That's actually super cool." Her mom radar stayed locked on the girls as they bounced to the next house. "You should stick to The House in the Cerulean Sea. It's more SFW. It's about this social worker who checks on magical orphan kids. Like Mary Poppins but with way cooler powers." His words about talking to her made those stupid butterflies show up again. "It could be because we're just good at this whole talking thing? Or maybe you're right and the universe is being extra with us." It was like the universe was messing with her, and she was about to lose it if it didn’t stop.
Amos found himself watching her with a smile on his face as she defended herself from all his accusations, noticing the way she scrunched up her nose to try to avoid grinning at his actions and words. He wasn't just imagining that things were happening between them, that was obvious but Amos did slow down with his little comments. Their children were just a few steps away and he did enjoy spending time with Malia, enough to decide before their date was over that he wanted to see her again, even if it was just as friends. She was giving him a much needed break from all his overthinking and day-to-day complicated feelings about how his life was these days. "Darn. I guess People magazine lied when they named me one of their prettiest men alive last year." Amos let out as a grin took over his face, his eyes moving back to Cece and Leilani as they hit up another house for candy.
"Oh, I'm curious. This may be just the thing that makes me a reader, well, that and not having anything to do during the day now that I'm retired. Kind of feels like I'm a stay-at-home dad more than anything." He admitted before turning his head to look back at her just in time to see her little wink. So much for him trying to slow down. His heart picked up in his chest at the sight of her alone and he was not ready for that. He needed to focus on being friends, for real. "Cerulean Sea, okay. I'll get the audiobook for that one. But I hate to break it to you, I'm starting ACOTAR first because I am too curious. I may need your phone number to ask questions about it, only questions about my reading adventures, nothing else." Amos joked and then shrugged. "I don't know, I think we just have a thing for each other. But that's just me."
Shivani listened as he reflected on what she'd said about his changes in personality and gave him a smile when he said she was right. This was what she meant anyways and honestly it was a good change, one that made her even prouder to be able to call Amos a friend of hers. "It does make sense," she told him before laughing at the memory of that drunken night when he'd called her and told her the news of his daughter. It had been an eventful night for sure but she only shook away his gratitude. "Come on--you don't have to thank me for that, you'd have hopefully done the same for me if I had some life-altering news like that," she told him before patting his shoulder gently. "I think you handled it well to be honest, you had a couple of freak out moments and now look at you--in the running for dad of the year." She said with a soft laugh before raising a brow. "How was Halloween? Did you guys do something together?"
Amos looked back at her with an easy smile, nodding his head. Sure enough, Amos would try and help her or any of his other close friends. At the end of the day, Amos was loyal to a fault, perhaps too loyal in some circumstances. But he also didn't have his shit together like Shivani did. She was centered and kind, both things that Amos failed to be sometimes. Especially when it mattered, but he could only hope that he was able to be there for his friends like they were there for him at this time. "Dad of the year is kind of funny since I wasn't even one for the first half." He joked, rolling his eyes at himself. "Yeah, Cece and I actually did matching costumes and a friend set us up for this date with a single mom in town. It was actually really fun. We actually already knew each other and I don't know how to explain it but...it was great. She's great. Her kid and Cece get along very well too."
alara had high hopes for what was forming between them. at this point in her life, it seemed ridiculous to hold a grudge toward someone it didn't work out with romantically. after all, she'd found someone who made her happy and she hoped that amos did too. she smiled in response to the other, "well, i appreciate that." she paused for a moment and stood up, "i guess i should leave you to it. i've taken up enough of your time, don't you think?"
Amos smiled slowly back at her as she began to say goodbye, glad that they seemed to have reached a different stage as exes. Where they could actually have conversations without one of them reminding the other of the breakup. "It was good to see you and talk to you, Alara. I'll see you around?"
Malia felt her cheeks burn hotter as he kept up the flirting. She wanted to blame it on the autumn chill, but who was she kidding? He was so goofy, it was impossible for her to keep a straight face. "How dare I? Boy please, you're the one who's out here fishing for compliments," she shot back, trying to ignore how her stomach fluttered when he called her hot. She hadn't felt this way about anyone in ages. When he nudged her shoulder, she stumbled a bit, laughing at their height difference. "Non-stop thinking about you? In your dreams, buddy. I've been way too busy reading about witches and watching Bluey with Leilani to obsess over anyone." The lie tasted sweet on her tongue … she had definitely thought about him more than once since their first meeting. But he was just fun to hang out with. That’s all. His comment about making him laugh caught her off guard. "Well, someone's got to keep you entertained," she retorted, but inside she was glowing. Making someone laugh felt good, especially someone who seemed to get her weird sense of humor.
"Oh my gosh, ACOTAR? You did not just bring up fairy smut in front of our kids!" she whispered, fighting back a giggle. "But yeah, I've read them. Multiple times. Don't judge me." She couldn’t lie, she was touched that he looked up books after their first meeting. "And Stanley Tucci? Good choice. That man could read a phone book and I'd listen. But maybe start with something fun … have you tried The House in the Cerulean Sea? It's like a warm hug in book form." It scared her how easy this felt - walking together, trading book recommendations, watching their girls become instant friends. Easy was dangerous. Easy made you let your guard down. She shut that line of thought immediately. They were friends. Friends. FRIENDS. "You know what's wild? Here we are, talking about books and parenting like we've known each other forever. The universe has a weird sense of humor sometimes."
"I'm fishing for compliments? You literally called me hot a minute ago. And adorable. And now you're trying to act cool but that's fine, that's good I'll survive." Amos bit down on his bottom lip to stop his smile from showing up on his lips as if that would prove her point. He chuckled when he noticed her stumbling a little bit, reaching over to steady her a little bit since it was his doing, a hand on her back just momentarily. "Ow. Wow. First date isn't over yet and you are alreayd friend-zoning me? I can't believe you just called me buddy. Unprovoked." Amos was joking, but he also wondered if that was their best option. Deep down, he knew that he probably wasn't ready for anything very serious. He was going through a lot of changes and he liked Malia. He really, really liked her. So maybe she was right to bring them back down to earth from all the flirting.
Amos' eyes almost pop out of his head when she explained what the book series was about, clearly clueless. "Fairy, what?!" He looked at their daughters who were barely paying them any attention and then looked back at Mal. "Rewind. Fairy smut? How was I supposed to know that?!" He whispered, laughing almost nervously. "That's actually funny. Uh, Cece's mom is a romance writer. It's one of the few things I know about her." Amos tilted his head to the side, his attention on the kids again as they reached a house and they went to ring the doorbell, Amos and Malia staying a safe distance away from them to keep an eye on them. "What is it about? I need a warning if you're recommending fairy smut to me, I feel like I need something a little tamer to begin with." He teased lightly and then raised an eyebrow at her words. "Didn't we do this the first time we met though? I guess I'll agree, I don't normally talk to people as much as I have talked with you, stranger."

slowly but surely, things seemed to be coming together for her ex boyfriend. after all, she remembered the conversation they had back at the beach where he felt as though his life was over just due to the fact that he was retiring. now, he had a daughter and he'd managed to meet someone. "oh yeah?" she smiled in response to amos' words. "i'm happy to hear that you've found someone that you can enjoy your down time with. you know, outside of your daughter."
Amos nodded his head, smiling widely back at her. For the first time since their breakup, it felt like he and Alara could maybe be friends if they both wanted to. He was just content with the fact that she seemed truly happy now, that she wasn't letting what happened between them a while ago taunt her like sometimes Amos let it get to him. "Thank you. And for what is worth, Alara, I am very happy that you're happy too."
“That’s true,” she commented before letting out a soft sigh. She was feeling quite content with where she was now in life. It was a new feeling if she was being honest, one where she wasn’t sure how to cope with it. After all—wasn’t there such a thing as being too happy? That’s where Shivani was right now. His question had her smiling as she shrugged, “there’s a lot that’s changed but it’s all for the better. You seem less impulsive for one, and just calmer in a lot of ways,” she commented before continuing, “I think the only reason I really noticed is because we’re not hanging out on a daily basis so I can see those little shifts.” And when he thanked her, she simply nodded because she knew she didn’t need to say these things and he had enough people in his life probably telling him and cheering him on but she knew personally she’d never tire if anyone complimented her in that way.
Amos gave her words some thoughts, definitely trying to see what she meant. It felt strange, realizing that he now had a new priority, a little human that depended on him for many things. Cece had her mother, of course, she was the most important person in the child's life, she would always be, but Amos had learned upon meeting her that he wanted to be a good dad and most importantly a good person for her and their father-daughter relationship. "Yeah, I think you're right. I have changed a little bit. I'm kind of not looking for the same things or people that I used to before. I don't know if that makes sense?" He admitted with a small shrug. "Thank you for helping me out that night, by the way. I was a mess, but you made me feel better."
"I will be fine. I tend to drink my pain away, which isn't very healthy but it's better than not feeling things." Amos said with a small shrug. Besides, a bottle of wine felt like nothing compared to some of the things he'd drank when he was younger and less careful. "Just make sure you enjoy that gelato and amaretto, I promise you won't regret it."
While his answer wasn't exactly comforting, Sofia didn't really feel like prying into the man's life. He clearly was ready to move on with his day as well. "Yeah, of course... Thanks again. I appreciate it." As she walked away from the man and the shop, she couldn't help, but think how nice he was. He didn't need to help her out after their initial awkward interaction, but Sofia knew her parents were going to appreciate the gesture.
Amos and Jemma didn't hang out very often, or made plans to hang out outside of their families hanging out and spending time together. With everything going on though, Amos reached out to the youngest Lawson, offering her a distraction from Kian's situation but also some sort of reassurance with his company. "Christmas shopping just got so much more expensive for me, not that I'm complaining, I love a good shopping spree." He laughed gently, frowning when he realized something. "But do you think it's weird to buy a gift for someone you've only met like, twice?"
What in the fresh hell was she thinking blurting out hot dad like that? Now he's never going to let this go, and honestly? The way he was grinning about it was making it ten times worse - and also kind of adorable, but she wasn’t unpacking that right now. She could've said literally anything else - commented on the weather, asked about his costume, but no. Malia’s mouth decided to go full thirsty mode in front of the kids. And the worst part? He was totally eating this up, with that smile that made her forget all the reasons why she swore off dating. Universe, if you're listening, this is so not fair.
Her face flushed as his teasing hit right on target. "Listen here, Ken. I said what I said about the hot dad thing. No take-backs," she said, trying to maintain her composure while her stomach did somersaults. He had the nerves to giggle. It was cute though. "Obsessed? Boy, please. I don’t have time to stalk you," she retorted, rolling her eyes. His whisper-yelling made her lose it. She giggled in front of the kids like some banshee. “You need to stop playing. We’re about to get dragged into the loony bin soon.” She watched their daughters skipping ahead, their excited chatter about candy floating back to them.
"The bar must be super low in Wilmington if this is the most fun you've had on a date," she teased. This wasn't even supposed to be a real date - just two single parents thrown together by their mutual friend. But watching him with Cece, seeing how gentle and present he was, made her question if maybe she'd been too quick to write off all men as potential threats. "Real talk? I've been reading this wild series about modern witches living their best lives in New York. It’s like brain candy, but sometimes that's exactly what you need, right?" Talking about fictional witches living their best lives was way better than explaining how she'd spent the last two years rebuilding her life from scratch - and honestly, who didn't need a little magical escapism sometimes? "It counts. Don't let anyone shame you for listening to audiobooks. They're haters. Look at you trying to better yourself though. That almost brought tears to my eyes."
Amos' smile widened at her reaction to his teasing, keeping his eyes on her while he made sure to also keep eye on the two little girls walking ahead of them, too busy planning their trick or treat takeover. Instant best friends or whatever that meant in three year old's minds. "Wow, and you're honest too. As if you could get any hotter, how dare you?" He asked nonchalantly, making sure to keep his voice low enough for just them. She was adorable, in that, really attractive and fascinating way. And she was funny, too. Amos didn't know how but with just a second time meeting her, he was entirely too thrilled to have her around.
"Admit it, you've been thinking about me non-stop." He nudged her shoulder with his, almost awkwardly due to their height difference. She was tiny, it was adorable. "The bar is not in hell, but you make me laugh a lot. Very effortlessly and I like it, can you blame me?" Amos asked sincerely, his eyes soft despite the mischievous smile on his face. It was becoming clearer to him that as a friend or more, he would love to keep Malia around.
Raising an eyebrow at her book choice, Amos shrugged. "Interesting. Very good and on brand for the season. Is that what you typically read? I'm curious. I did some research, apparently women our age are really into this series called ACOTAR or something. Have you read those?" It was probably silly of him to admit that he had looked into a small comment that she'd made in their first meeting, especially considering that they didn't make plans to meet up again, but she'd caused an impression. "Oh, I haven't started yet. I was curious about your opinion. I don't know how to really start with the reading thing. Maybe something about parenting is a good start? Although I did see Stanley Tucci has a book about food, maybe I could start there. If he narrates the audiobook I'd be interested."

The idea that Amos had never pictured himself having kids made sense from the man she knew once upon a time but during the time she’d followed his career from afar, and certain snippets in the news or whatever, she knew he’d certainly matured in that time. But the man who sat in front of her today was so starkly different and that spoke volumes about his personal growth. “I get that yeah—but now looking at you with Cece, it’s like you were meant to have her,” she told him with a grin that expressed just how good it was that his life had fallen into place this way.
“Okay sounds good. I'll give to her directly then," Samira paused for a moment before continuing, "honestly if she’s that confident, that’s a really good sign,” she nodded before glancing in his direction and being glad at the words he was saying because she knew Kian was a good person who didn’t deserve this all happening to him despite the circumstances that led them here. “Of course I mean—he’s such an upstanding citizen of the city and has been for so long, of course he has everyone rallying for him.”
"It's really funny, how things happen like that." Amos conceded. It did make a lot of sense for him now, being a dad, raising a child. He was learning a lot, most days he learned more from his own daughter than he'd learned ever before which he hadn't ever expected. He turned to look back at their daughters as they ran around the playground, a small smile on his lips.
"She's quite the bulldozer, but she is also Jemma's close friend, apparently, so I know she'll fight like hell for him, you know?" Amos explained slowly. The Kian situation was very, very upsetting, there was a lot at stake, but he trusted they'd find a way for justice. "Yeah, that's true. One of the kindest people I know as well. But how's it going for you? Everything okay?"
Armi didn't particularly think her brother would handle this well. That could've been a main reason why she never told him to begin with, or her dads. If she was honest, had Sean not returned on some weird ass vendatta, she would've taken this to the grave. But apart of her always knew the day would come, deep down; she did. Because if she hadn't, she wouldn't have saved all the proof. Apart of her always knew she'd have to use this to save herself one day. In this case, it would be her boyfriend. She wasn't surprised when he refused to sit. If anything, she might've been had he done so. She licked her lips, "Because he wasn't worth trying to kill or going to prison for." She answered honesty, "I didn't want y'all to worry about all that. So, it wasn't of importance at the time."
Armi's eyes fell to the pile of evidence in front of her. So many years of trauma, or pain, laid before them. "Around the two year mark." She whispered, "At first, he was great -- really charmed me off my feet. Make me feel special, and I felt like a princess." She shifted her weigh from foot to foot uncomfortably. "Then one day he hit me and he hadn't ever done that before so it took me off guard. But he apologized and said he wouldn't do it again..." She shrugged, flickering her attention back up at her brother, "You know how that usually goes." Sighing, "I didn't even realize it at first... the way he started changing me, changing on me. He let me finish college, get my degree to become a nurse, but afterwards, he said that was for show and not actual use."
She reached down and picked up a bag that held two loose teeth. "He was drunk the night he knocked these out." She stated before flashing her teeth at her brother. Not one tooth looked out of place. "He had that fixed pretty quickly tho. Best that money could buy." The little pluses she guessed. "I knew when Kian shot the gun that he would actually shoot him, because Sean liked to play Russian Roulette. One day he told me that 3 was the lucky number and I realized then that he usually didn't go passed 2 times. He shoot into a wall above my head one night that third time just to show me he wasn't lying."
She reached down and picked up another bag, this time the bag held a pregnancy test, and in her other hand was a few sheets of white paper. "I broke off the wedding because I found out I was pregnant." She admitted, "This is the confirmation of the pregnancy." She held up the first sheet, before showing the second, "And this is the confirmation of the abortion I had a few days after I returned to Wilmington with you and our dads." She sat those things down on the table, "I was ready to sign my soul over to him without another thought because he had conditioned me to. But then the test showed two lines and something broke. I feared the idea of having kids with him, and I feared giving my child him for a father, so that was what had me decide to come home."
"He recently found out that I had been pregnant and had come to Wilmington... I guess hoping to claim what was his. Only, I never had the baby and he, well -- that was a betrayal to him." She looked up at her brother, "Long story short, he was an horrible man. I don't even know who I used to be because of him. I went from becoming a nurse to... to what you have now." Biting down hard on her bottom lip, "They can't lock Kian away over this piece of shit, Amos. He deserved what he got. My only regret is that he didn't suffer longer."
Amos knew that he would never be ready to hear the atrocities that his sister went through. A part of him, a big part of him, had always knew that she had been struggling far more than she showed. He wasn't the most vigilant of people or paid enough attention to spot it from a mile away but she'd come back to town, she hadn't been the same. Amos had always thought she was sad and disappointed, but now as things got clearer and she began sharing what exactly type of hell she had been in until returning to Wilmington, Amos couldn't understand how no one had noticed.
"Armi..." He swallowed hard as the story kept getting darker and darker. Amos wasn't even sure how she managed to keep it together so well, almost as if she wasn't telling her own story. His eyes were wet with unshed tears when she finished talking. He had failed her in so many fucking ways without even realizing it and it was hitting him hard, how alone she'd probably felt having to go through all of this by herself. Amos let out a shaky breath and then closed the distance between he and his sister, wrapping his arms around her in a tight hug.
"Fuck, Armi. I am so sorry." He let out in a soft whisper, holding onto her tightly. How many times had she been close to dying and he hadn't even realized it, he couldn't believe. "I'm sorry I didn't see it, I'm sorry I didn't help you." Amos shook his head at the thought of losing her, of not having her around if Sean had managed to convince her to stay. An older brother was supposed to take care of his baby sister and he hadn't even known. "We're gonna make sure Kian is free and you two will get your happy ending. I will do everything that I have to do, Armi. I really will."
