âSo⌠this is it, huh?â Yukari asked, holding Makotoâs hand as they looked up at the night together. A near-full moon hung high in the sky, surrounded by a few stars here and there; light pollution had taken its toll on their visibility, but on nights like these, a few bright ones still eked their way down to Earth.
âJust one more dayâŚâ her boyfriend sighed. He looked at their legs, side-by-side and kicking at thin air off the side of their dorm roof.
âItâs going to be a bit weird and scary, donât you think? After we kill the last Shadow tomorrow and stop the Dark Hour⌠No more S.E.E.S. and no more of this Shadow and Persona stuff. I guess they just expect us to go back to being normal high schoolers again?â
âI guess,â Makoto shrugged with another sigh. âDonât really know how thatâs supposed to work, butâŚâ
âRight?! Iâd better get some kinda compensation for the shit this job has put me through!â
âYouâre asking an international conglomerate to give you money for saving the world?â Makoto asked, a smile creeping on the edges of his mouth. âTheyâre definitely expecting us to just pack up and go home when this is all over.â
âYeah, youâre probably rightâŚâ
âSo⌠what are you going to do?â Yukari wondered, resting her head on her shoulder as she turned to him. âI mean⌠I know you donât have any parents or relatives, butâŚâ
âIâve still got my scholarship, so Iâll probably just finish high school, and thenâŚâ The boy let out a small, pensive groan. âI donât know. Maybe Iâll travel around Japan or something, take odd jobs here and there⌠Hopping from place-to-place is all Iâve done, so I donât know why Iâd change that.â
âSo⌠you wouldnât consider settling down?â she asked, twiddling her thumbs. âYou know, staying in one place for a while?â
âI mean⌠maybe? If there was a reason.â
âSo⌠you mean ifâŚâ
âIf you asked me to stay, I would?â
âHuh?â
âThatâs what you were going to ask, right? If you asked me to stay, would I?â
âUm, well, I meanâŚâ Yukari scratched the back of her neck. âWould you?â
ââŚâ Makoto took a deep breath and looked back up at the sparse stars. âIf you wanted me to stay, yeah, Iâd stay.â
âReally?â Yukari raised her eyebrows, and Makoto saw a little light in her eyes. âIf I asked you to stay with me after we graduate, youâd do that?â
âYeah, Iâd do that.â
ââŚMakoto?â
âYeah?â
âIf you did still choose to wander around Japan or whatever⌠would you still love me?â Quickly, Yukari shook her head. âLike, if I said it was okay for you to travel and we just had a long-distance relationship or something, you wouldnât find another girl on the road?â
ââŚDonât think I ever could,â he said, shaking his head. âMy body doesnât stop moving, but⌠my heart is a bit stubborn. If it doesnât want anyone in, nobodyâs getting in. If itâs picked a person to stand by⌠then even if weâre separated, my heart will stay with you.â
ââŚThatâs⌠Youâre a pretty poetic guy, MakotoâŚâ
âNot really⌠I just say what Iâm thinking.â
âYou think of some really cool stuff.â
ââŚâ Makoto just wearily smiled. âIf I traveled away⌠weâd be like the story of the weaver and the shepherd, right?â
âSo what, Iâm Orihime?â giggled Yukari, leaning back and letting her hair drape down just enough to touch the roof floor. âAnd that makes you Hikoboshi?â
âIâd rather us not be a tragic love,â he remarked. âBut if we had to be⌠Iâd like to see you at least once a year.â
âJust once?â Yukari narrowed her eyes. âTry again.â
âI wouldnât argue with more.â
âHmph, still trying to play it cool, huh?â The archer sighed and put an arm around Makoto. âThatâs okay, I know youâre just a weird, goofy guy inside.â
ââŚThanks,â he smiled, leaning on her shoulder. âHow about this: if the fight has to end here, letâs do whatever comes after it together.â

Kotone wasnât too sure how she got to her current position. She was sitting in her room, letting a Persona apply her makeup so that she could go on a date with Mitsuru. At least, it felt like a date. How many ways was she supposed to interpret the words, âI wish for us both to get to know each other better over dinnerâ that werenât romantic? Kotone had neither been on a date nor inside of a really fancy restaurant before, so she was kind of panicking. She didnât even know how to put on makeup right, let alone process the cascading torrent of emotions she was being overwhelmed with!
âJust tell her how you feel,â Succubus encouraged, biting her lip as she dotted makeup across Kotoneâs face with an artistâs precision. âYouâll feel so much better when you do.â
âWhat if she rejects me and things get all weird between us?â
âTrust me, youâre already making it weirdâŚâ The Personaâs voice trailed off as she steadied the makeup brush with both hands, tracing just under Kotoneâs eye. âHolding it in is taking the cowardâs way out of the situation. Any self-respecting woman shouldnât be afraid of her feelings. Take me, for example. I donât feel any need to hide from what I feel. Learn something from that.â
âWh- But youâre me!â
âNo, honey, I wouldnât step out of this room wearing that shade of orange.â
âI didnât summon you to criticize me. Iâm worried about, well⌠What if she starts getting grossed out when I ask? Does she like men or women? Would she still see me as a woman if we dated, or would I be considered a man to her because of whatâs-â
âYouâre giving me a headache.â
âO-Oh, sorryâŚâ
âKill your fear here and now or itâll bog down the whole night, hon.â
âI just⌠Iâve never done this beforeâŚâ
âThatâs the most thrilling part!â
âShiomi?â Mitsuruâs voice softly called from the other side of the door, punctuated with a firm knock. âWho are you talking to?â
âN-No one!â
âHmph, taking credit for my work, huh?â Succubus pouted. âThe most thankless job Iâve ever hadâŚâ
As the Persona disappeared, Kotone stood up and straightened out her orange and white dress, taking a deep breath before opening the door. Mitsuru clutched her purse, smiling at Kotone. The sleek black and silver designer bag rested calmly against a cherry-red dressâone that perfectly matched her lipstick.
âIâm sorry, I rarely go out these days to somewhere that demands that I look my best,â the heiress sighed. âI hope that our evening isnât affected by it.â
âNo, no, thatâs⌠Iâm the one who looks underdressed, really.â
âI believe you look serviceable, Shiomi-san.â
From behind Mitsuru, a familiar purple-haired maid stepped out with a smile.
âKikuno!â Kotone cheered, throwing her arms around the hired help as they both laughed. âNice to see you again! And while weâre not fighting for our lives!â
âThat is a more favorable scenario,â she chuckled.
âI thought you worked on the Kirijo Estate, though?â
âI work where Mitsuru-sama asks me to. It is her that I am in service to.â
âOh, right.â
âShe will not be accompanying us tonight, though. She was only here to assist in my wardrobe selection and to drive us to the restaurant,â Mitsuru clarified. âSpeaking of which, we should be going. Our table wonât hold forever.â
âR-Right!â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
When Mitsuru wanted Kikuno to drive them to a restaurant, Kotone assumed it would still be on Tatsumi Port Island, or at the very least, still in Iwatodai. Imagine her surprise when the limo just kept going and going and going. They had kept each other entertained with small talk, but after 20 or so minutes, Kotone had to pop the question.
âUm, Senpai⌠Iâve enjoyed talking and all, but where are we going? Kikuno has been driving us for a long time.â
âIâm sorry, the establishment is rather far,â she sighed. âItâs a rather nice place in Shibuya.â
âAh, that explains it,â Kotone awkwardly chuckled. âI didnât know we were going out of town just to eat dinner and talk.â
âWell, this is you Iâm talking about. I donât care how far we have to travel just to make our evening enjoyable for us both.â
ââŚâ Kotone let a small, uncomfortable silence hang between them for just a moment. âHey, um, Senpai⌠Why are you doing all this for me?â
âHm?â Mitsuru cocked her head. âIâve told you before, itâs-â
âI-I know youâve said itâs because youâre just looking out for me. Believe me, thereâs nothing I appreciate more than paying for doctorâs visits and estrogen, but⌠are you really only doing it because itâll make me perform better, orâŚâ
ââŚâ Mitsuru cast her glance down, shame slowly consuming her expression. âShiomi, I-IâŚâ
âMitsuru-sama, Shiomi-san, we have arrived,â Kikuno reported, a small window rolling down between the driverâs seat and them. âI can-â
âPlease, Kikuno, give us a minuteâŚâ
ââŚâ The maid took a moment to read the air between the two girls. âAs you wish, Young Miss.â
As she rolled the window back up, Mitsuru leaned forward, shakily clutching her knees.
âI should say that Iâm sorry for stringing you along like this, ShiomiâŚâ she said, taking a deep breath. âIt would be rather cruel of me to let this continue any further.â
âYou donât have to apologize for anything, really! I promise Iâm not-â
âItâs rather embarrassing for me to say,â Mitsuru sighed, her face turning red as a sickly-sweet smile danced across her lips. âBut⌠I truly did initially seek to just merely aid you once I stumbled upon your position. But as I helped you more and learned all about you, I began to realize something my mother had told me long ago⌠About the joys and pleasures that accompany coming to understand someone.â
âSenpai, what areâŚ?â
âIâm sorry for being rather cryptic; itâs a bad habit of mine when I donât quite know how to phrase something⌠Itâs just that in our time together, I think youâve captured my attention in more ways than one. That is to say⌠I-Iâve fallen for you⌠Kotone.â
âM-Mitsuru-senp-â
âShhh,â Mitsuru leaned forward and put a finger on Kotoneâs lips. âIf youâre comfortable with it, drop the âsenpai.â I wouldnât mind it as long as itâs just usâŚâ
âI⌠MitsuruâŚâ Tears gathered in the corners of Kotoneâs eyes. âAre you⌠I-I have to know, w-what do you see me as?â
âSee you as?â Mitsuru furrowed her brow. âI see you as one of the kindest, compassionate, and most reliable young women I have ever known. Itâs hardly even fair when I attempt to measure anyone else to the standard of matching you. Why?â
âN-NothingâŚâ Kotone wiped the tears from her eyes, sniffling as she gave small, happy laughs. âT-Thatâs all I needed to hearâŚâ
Though Kotone couldnât fully stand up in the limo, she allowed herself to hunch over and throw her arms around Mitsuru. The girl sank to her knees and pressed her cheek against the heiressâs abs as Mitsuru ran her fingers through Kotoneâs hair in return.
âL-Letâs go eat,â the auburn-haired girl said with a trembling voice. âI know someone whoâll be really upset if I let my makeup smear.â
âOh? Yukari helped you?â
âHah, no, not herâŚâ
Mitsuru tapped the limoâs window, and the door popped open, courtesy of Kikuno waiting outside with a smile. She bowed to both the passengers as they got out, and Kotone marveled at just how plain the place they were standing in front of was. It was just a simple ramen shop.
âOh⌠Iâm not complaining, but itâs not what I was expecting.â
âI knew a fancy restaurant wouldnât compare to the local-style comfort food you like,â Mitsuru chuckled. âSo I had Kikuno find the best shop within an hour and a half with that feeling.â
âWowâŚâ Kotone clung onto Mitsuruâs arm. âItâs perfect! Show me the way in!â
âAs you wish,â the redhead chuckled, letting the girl thread an arm through hers as they strolled into the plain-looking shop, both of them much too overdressed for the location.

At long last, the battle was over. With the selfless sacrifice of the one they called âLeader,â the rest of S.E.E.S. watched the Dark Hour crumble and humanity live to see another day. Afterwards, life persisted as it always had for the world. Students went to school, businessmen went to work, and three important young adults graduated from Gekkoukan High: Mitsuru Kirijo, Akihiko Sanada, and Shinjiro Aragaki.
These three, with their fates intertwined, stuck together through thick and thin, bracing themselves for the new eras of each of their livesâŚ
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
âRise and shine,â Shinjiro grunted, flipping an omelette as Mitsuru emerged from her room.Â
The heiressâ hair was frizzed and upturned, sticking out in odd places as it bounced with her cadence. Though she hardly left her dwelling looking anything less than refined, within the walls of her own space, Mitsuru was fine with her tattered black sweatpants and extremely baggy t-shirtâone that had originally belonged to Shinjiro before being commandeered for her nightly use and comfort.
âGood morningâŚâ she drowsily yawned, her eyes still only barely pried open as Mitsuru took a seat at the small kitchen table. âDid you alreadyâŚ?â
âYeah, right here,â the young man nodded, placing a âWorldâs Best Motherâ mug in front of her, fresh coffee wafting up her nose. âJust like you always want: a splash of cream and two spoonfuls of sugar. So donât complain about it this time.â
âThank you, ShinjiâŚâ
âYeah, yeah, donât thank me yet, Princess. You havenât even tasted breakfast yet.â
Shinjiro placed an omelette and small bowl of fruit in front of Mitsuru, spawning a warm, eager smile across her face. At the same time, he placed another omelette with toast and peanut butter in front of the spot where he would sit, and then a large bowl of pure scrambled eggs, cheese, and meat where Akihiko would go. The white-haired man even walked into the room as Shinjiro was pouring orange juice.
âHey, looks like youâre finally up,â Akihiko remarked, nodding with a smile. Having come out of the shower, he was just wearing sweatpants and had a towel draped across his shoulders. âI told Shinji to let you sleep in for once.â
âMerciâŚâ Mitsuru sipped her coffee and leaned back in her seat. âI feel terribleâŚâ
âYou were up âtill 4AM writing that damn essay,â Shinji frowned, giving the heiress a disapproving glare. âEven after I told you to go to bed.â
âI was⌠Itâs⌠IâŚâ Not awake enough to argue, Mitsuru just sighed and rubbed her eyes.
âNot like the thing was due tomorrow.â
âStill⌠Diligence isâŚâ
âI wouldnât argue,â Akihiko advised. âHeâs not wrong.â
âHmph, thanks.â Shinjiro looked over at the young man. âAlso, put on a goddamn shirt.â
âYes, I was also about to comment about thatâŚâ
âHm? Whatâs so wrong about it? You guys know what I look like.â
âYeah, but I donât need that kinda view while Iâm tryinâ to eat.â
âWhatâre you talking about?â
âAkihikoâŚâ Mitsuru let out a large yawn and shook her head. âJust go get a shirt.â
ââŚFine, okay.â
As Akihiko went to fetch a shirt, Mitsuru began to eat her breakfast. Per usual, Shinjiroâs cooking was top-notch and put her in a good mood. He had made her omelette extra fluffy and stuffed it with spinach, ham, and feta cheeseâexactly as she liked it.
âYour breakfasts never fail to disappoint,â she complimented. âIâm sure if you opened your own restaurant, youâd have no problem keeping it in business.â
âTch, this again?â Shinjiro raised an eyebrow, taking a bite of his own omelette. âI thought I told you to drop it.â
âBut it would be-â
âI ainât openinâ a restaurant.â
âIf money is your concern-â
âI got you sleepinâ with me; of course money ainât my concern. Just âcause I like to cook for you both doesnât mean I wanna open a whole damn restaurant.â
âBut youâre not even in school like Akihiko and I.â
âYeah, youâre right, sweetie,â he nodded, his tone raising with a slight bit of annoyance. âYou remind me at least once a week.â
ââŚâ
ââŚListen, donât expect me to just hop onboard every plan you come up with for me,â Shinjiro mumbled, sipping his orange juice. âYouâve tried to get me to do a lot of things because you think Iâm wastinâ my life right now, right?â
âI-I just think youâre not living up to your potential and-â
âUm, hey guys, I gotta run,â Akihiko said, stumbling into the room and hopping on one foot while trying to tie his shoe. âEmergency.â
âI understand. Stay safe,â Mitsuru said, looking up and expectantly pursing her lips. As he passed by, Akihiko gave quick pecks on her and Shinjiroâs lips. âAnd be back before 7PM this time. Donât make me and Shinjiro eat dinner alone again.â
âGotcha,â Akihiko nodded, grabbing his coat. âIâll see you guys-â
âTake your goddamn breakfast with you,â Shinjiro gruffly interrupted. âI took the time to cook it, so the least you could do is take the time to eat it.â
Instead of just taking the bowl with him, Akihiko grabbed it and tilted it up to his mouth, as if he were about to drink something. Using his fork, the young man scarfed down the loaded scrambled eggs in a way that made Mitsuru and Shinjiro actually afraid that he was going to choke. With a satisfied sigh, Akihiko finally put his empty bowl down and nodded to his partners.
âSee ya!â
He was out the door before the other two could even comment about what happened. They just looked at each other, shocked and maybe even slightly appalled.
âThatâs gonna fuckinâ kill him one day.â
âMaybe⌠thatâs worth a talk later,â she agreed. âBut what we were talking about before-â
âListen, I know you care a lot, okay?â Shinjiro put his utensils down and leaned back in his seat, crossing his legs and looking at Mitsuru. âBut I ainât wasting my life if Iâm still servicing you two.â
âYes, but weâre not here most of the day. Thatâs what worries me.â
âI keep myself busy. How do you think I cook all that good shit for dinner?â
âYou could share that with so many more people.â
ââŚâ Shinjiro glanced away.
âI know a restaurant has been your dream for a while,â Mitsuru firmly said, putting down her coffee with enough force to slightly rock the table. âThatâs why Iâve been pushing the topic so much. Because I know you want it.â
âA dreamâs only worth it if I reach out for it myself, PrincessâŚâ Shinjiro leaned forward. âSo donât force it on me. If Iâm ready, Iâll come to you.â
ââŚâ Mitsuru took a deep breath and looked down. ââŚPromise?â
âI donât lie.â
âI want to make sure.â
âYou wanna seal it with a handshake or a contract?â
ââŚCome here. Thereâs only one way to seal a deal with you which I trust.â
âPsht, right,â Shinji chuckled, a small teasing grin dancing across his face as he got up. âThis is all for my own good, right? Youâre not indulging yourself a bit with this?â
âOf course not!â
Shinjiro leaned down and let Mitsuru plant a kiss on his own lips. He thought it was pretty adorable how much blind confidence she had in her ability to do it. She pulled away fairly quickly, crossing her arms and giving Shinji a fierce stare.
âOkay, our deal is sealed then. Donât expect to be able to back out now.â
âYeah, yeah, wouldnât dream of it, Princess.â
If you have a pairing or scenario you wanna see, comment here or on AO3!
âLook, Iâm just like Akihiko-senpai,â Kotone grinned, putting up her fists and wearing a serious expression. âItâs time for training⌠and to eat only yakisoba when I donât go out for dinner.â
Makoto stared blankly at her from the dorm couch, a half-eaten protein bar twirling between his fingers as he snacked. Fleeting light from the late-afternoon sun slanted through the blinds, casting amber stripes over the coffee table. He chewed slowly, looking at how she held herself. Bouncing on the balls of her feet, tightening her muscles, the exaggerated eyebrows flaring above her crooked smile. She really did have a good impression of him.
âYouâve got the hands wrong,â Makoto observed. âSenpai fights southpaw.â
âTch, youâre right,â she huffed. Kotone dragged her feet over to him and threw her body onto the couch, letting her legs hang off the arm of the furniture as the top of her head bumped against the boyâs thigh. âGotta admit Iâm getting better though. Not just with my impressions. Tartarus has been a breeze for us lately.â
Makoto just let out a noncommittal grunt. Truthfully, Kotone really had gotten a lot better. Her Personas were coming out faster, moves hitting harder, not to mention her naginata proficiency getting fairly insane as of late. But admitting any of that out loud wouldâve just been handing her ammunition for some kind of smug, playful argument. Instead, he just broke off a bit of his protein barâthe end he had bit intoâand tossed it in his mouth, giving the rest to Kotone.
âHere, you need it.â
âOh, thanks,â she nodded, taking it without complaint.
âYouâve been skipping dinner again.â
âIâm just dieting,â she shrugged. âYukari does it.â
âSheâs such a health freak that she knows what sheâs doing.â
âJeez, are you my mom or something?â
ââŚâ He just gave her a look.
âHah⌠SorryâŚâ Kotone bit into the protein bar. Despite how artificial and chalky the peanut butter tasted, there was something about them that always kept her wanting more. âYou know, if you keep spoiling me with these, one day someoneâs going to think you care.â
âWhat a shame.â
âA shame, hm?â Kotone took another bite and narrowed her eyes. âDo you care?â
âHuh?â Makoto looked down at her. âWhat kind of question is that?â
âJust a simple one. Do you care about me?â
ââŚâ
The boy stayed silent for a moment. He couldnât really tell whether or not this was some kind of trap, but he could sense at least a bit of sincerity in her question.Â
âI care about everyone on the team.â
âBzZzZzT, wrong answer,â she chimed. âCanât just lump us all together like that. What do you like about each of us?â
ââŚSeriously?â
âHumor me.â
âAlrightâŚâ Makoto leaned back and crossed his legs. âYukari is easy to talk to and nice; our senpai are reliable; Junpei and Fuuka try their hardest even if they make mistakes; and youâŚâ
âMe?â
âYou,â he nodded.
âMe.â
ââŚâ Makotoâs straight face broke into a smile. âYou make me laugh. The only one who makes me laugh, really.â
âHuh?â Kotone sat up. âSo thatâs my likable personality trait?â
âHm⌠Yeah. No one else can do it, so youâre one of a kind.â
âPsht, I couldâve told you that,â she grinned vainly. âBut youâre irreplaceable too.â
âAm I?â he asked, blinking hard.
In response, Kotone giggled and pushed her body up on the couch, scooting down far enough to now rest her head fully in his lap.
âWho else has thighs worthy of being pillows?â
âYukari.â
âOh, true. Other than her, itâs just you.â
ââŚYour headâs kinda heavy.â
âWow, so this is the fabled charm of Makoto Yuki thatâs captured the heart of every Gekkoukan girl,â Kotone teased with a frown. âIf youâre going to call me heavy, at least pet my head.â

âHey, Chidorita, where are you off to?â Junpei asked, catching her in the hallway of Gekkoukan High School. She had been going there for a couple months now andâjust like Mitsuru askedâJunpei had been keeping an eye on her to make sure the transition into normalcy was smooth.
âThe art room,â she plainly responded. Chidori mustered a small smile for Junpei. âIâll see you back at our place later.â
âActually, we gotta talk,â the boy said, stepping in her way. They both knew what this conversation was about from the moment Junpei spoke up. âSo⌠How was class today?â
ââŚAlright.â
âReally? Because, umâŚâ Junpei scratched the back of his head. âYour homeroom teacher said you didnât show. Actually, she said you havenât shown up for a few daysâŚâ
ââŚâ Chidori didnât comment any more on that. She simply tiredly turned away. âThis isnât the place to talk about that.â
âIâŚâ Junpei caught himself. Even if she was just trying to put off the conversation, Chidori was right about that. This was definitely a more private talk. âAlright, letâs go back then.â
âI canât. A friend is waiting for me in the art room.â
âIâll just come with you and chill in the corner playing my CompStation Portable then,â he nonchalantly said. âThen we can walk home together afterw-â
âNo.â
ââŚAlright then,â sighed the boy. âIâll just⌠see you when you get back.â
âSounds good.â
Junpei turned around with a sigh, but before he could walk away, Chidori rushed forward and wrapped his arms around him from behind. She leaned her head against his back, keeping the guilty look on her face from his eyes.
âUm, JunpeiâŚâ Chidori wrapped her arms even tighter around him. âCould you⌠pick up our special dessert on your way back?â
âHeh, yeah,â he softly smiled, reaching his arm around and pulling her head in so he could touch his cheek to the top of her head. âYou alright?â
âYeahâŚâ
âYou sure?â
ââŚâ Chidori quietly pulled away, clutching her sides. âIâll see you there, JunpeiâŚâ
âSee you thenâŚâ
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
When Chidori came back to the dorm, Junpei was already finishing up dinner. That is to say, the three blocks of packaged ramen that he had haphazardly tossed into one large pot were finally done. Neither of them were particularly good cooks, so most meals either came in a package or a take-out box. Junpei had come to find out that Chidori was especially fond of anything he could add copious amounts of salt to. That, or anything so sweet that it made him sick to his stomach. Sheâs a girl of extremes.
âHey, hey, Chidorita,â he grinned, setting a bowl down on the coffee table. âJust finished dinner! And I recorded your show, so we can watch a nice crime drama with our ramen!â
âGoodâŚâ Chidori carefully set her messenger bag down on the dining table and held Junpeiâs arm. âIâm sorry about earlier todayâŚÂ
âHey, itâs no-â
âNo⌠Itâs not okay,â she insisted, sitting Junpei down at the table and taking a seat next to him. âWhat did you want to ask me?â
âUh, well⌠Why havenât you been going to class? I know you like the art club and all, but the whole deal was that youâd go to school. If you don't keep your grades up, you canât even stay in the club.â
âYes, well⌠I donât believe school is where I should be.â
âWeâve all been there, believe me. But you canât just-â
âI know your position on this, but⌠This life that you want me to live is so unfulfilling. Iâd rather do what I want to now than prepare for a future I donât desire.â
âCâmon Chidori, listen to yourself,â Junpei painfully sighed. âYouâre just thinking of now. You gotta ask what youâre gonna be doing in a few years and be realistic about-â
âI know what I want my future to be,â the girl interrupted, looking Junpei dead in the eyes. âI want you. I want my art. AndâŚâ Chidori held up the turtle she had been hiding under the table. âI want Leo.â
âChidori, I- Wait, where did he come from?!â
âI took him to school. He comforts me.â
âAlright then⌠Point is, you shouldnât just be thinking about what you want now.â
âBut I know what I want the future to look like, and it doesnât need the kind of schooling youâre insisting that I take part in.â
âChidoriâŚâ
âJunpei, where do you see yourself in a year?â Chidori asked with a frown. âWhen youâre out of high school, what will you be doing?â
âIâŚâ She had gotten him there. He had a shaky idea of what he wanted to do at best. âDonât change the subject on me.â
âI think itâs a relevant question to ask.â
Junpei crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair. He wished he could break out one of his witty comebacks, but for once nothing of that sort crossed his mind. The way Chidori was looking at him made the room feel as though it was closing in on himâthe assured stare she sported sure made Junpei feel like he was in the wrong. He had to use all his willpower to remind himself that he was doing the right thing for her.
âIâll go to college, get a job, and⌠Well, Iâll do the stuff normal people do.â
âHm⌠So itâs ânormalâ that youâre worried about?â she questioned. âYou think I wonât get to have a ânormalâ life?â
âHuh?â Junpeiâs eyes widened. âHey, hey, I never said that!â
âYou meant it.â
âWh- Câmon, Chidori, donât go puttinâ words in my mouth like thatâŚâ The boy straightened himself out and leaned against the table. âWhat I do know for certain is that I want to be with you. Even if Iâve got a shaky plan, itâs still a plan. Whatâre your plans?â
âI want to paint the beauty of the worldâŚâ Chidori softly smiled, looking down. âI donât know why, but I feel so connected to everyone in my life⌠You, Leo, even your friends⌠Even when weâre apart, itâs almost like I can still feel your pulse⌠That is the kind of art I want to make. The kind that illustrates just how connected all life can be.â
âHuhâŚâ Junpei tilted his head. âOk, that is really cool, but you canât skip straight to what you want to do. Eat your vegetables before your dessert, you know?â
âSpeaking ofâŚâ Chidori twiddled her thumbs, putting on a meek little smile. The girl wasnât really embarrassed or anything, but she knew that Junpei was weak to the act. âDid you pick them up on your way home?â
âHeh, you know I did,â Junpei grinned. âAnything for my Chidorita.â
âThen-â
âAfter the conversation.â
ââŚâ Chidori huffed and looked away.
âCâmon, you know Iâm not going to let up about this.â
ââŚâ
âChidori⌠donât get like that.â
ââŚâ
âYou canât ignore me forever.â
ââŚâ
âMaybe she can, actually,â he silently considered.
âListen, if you pass high school, we can work on getting you into an art school,â he reasoned. âA damn good one too. But they wonât even consider you if you didnât even graduate.â
ââŚâ Chidoriâs expression shifted as she contemplated the offer. Itâs one that Junpei had made before, but she always thought she could make up for the lack of a diploma with her art talent. âThey really wonât consider me if I donât graduate?â
âYeah, a lot of colleges wonât even look at your application if you havenât.â
ââŚOkay,â she sighed, admitting defeat. âIâm going to complain about it every day, though.â
âNo shame in that.â
âAnd youâll have to deal with how moody Iâll be about it.â
âIâve seen you moody before.â
âIâll be extra moody.â
âOh really?â Junpei slyly asked, raising his eyebrows. He got up and reached behind the bar, taking out a small box. âEven with these?â
Immediately, his girlfriendâs eyes lit up. Her weakness for this particular dessert was a button that Junpei knew how to push fairly well. Most people were more amicable after an offering, but for Chidori, it was like her special weakness. Junpei sat back down and placed the box in front of her, offering the girl the honor of the first piece.
Chidori plucked an item out of the box, preciously holding the dessert before biting into it. Beneath the layer of fried dough revealed a gooey mix of dark chocolate and marshmallow intertwined in a black and white swirl. It was a Port Island special treat known as Karma Dough. If you bite into the treat and see more marshmallow, youâre supposed to have good luck; more chocolate means bad luck. A simple, yet effective gimmick that became popular fairly quickly.
âBetter?â Junpei smirked.
âBetter,â she nodded.
âGood, goodâŚâ He closed the box and picked it back up. âNow letâs eat our actual dinner. Then you can have some more.â
âButâŚâ Chidori looked absolutely heartbroken, as if Junpei had taken her very source of life away. She held up the turtle that the girl had set down. âLeo wants one.â
âIâm like, 120% sure Leo canât eat any of whatâs in this.â
âYou can have my ramen.â
âHow about you have your ramen,â he proposed. âThen when you finish, Iâll let you have the whole box.â
âHmâŚâ
âYou canât eat just dessert,â he frowned. âThe doctor said youâre underweight as it is⌠So câmon, weâll eat ramen together, watch your crime drama, and then we can share the karma dough.â
âShare?â Chidori squinted. âYou just said I could have the whole box.â
âEr⌠Did I?â
âYou did.â
âMe and my big mouthâŚâ he mumbled. âLetâs justâŚâ
âHow about this?â Chidori asked, setting Leo back down on the table and approaching Junpei. She put her hands on his chest, letting the boy feel the gentle scrape of her fingernails though his shirt. She dropped her voice and talked in a slow, deliberate way. âWe can forget the TV, and you can go wait in my room while I take time to⌠freshen upâŚâ
ââŚâ Junpeiâs eyes drooped. âYouâve done this before. Youâre just going to barricade yourself on the 4th floor with the karma dough again.â
ââŚâ
âRamen,â he said, thrusting the bowl into her hands. âEat.â
âI almost had you again, didnât I?â she teased.
âNo.â
âDamn, she was this close before I used my brainâŚâ
âYouâre one hell of a tease, Chidorita,â he grinned, sheepishly scratching the back of his head. âBut thatâs why I love ya.â
âHeheâŚâ
Junpei never got tired of watching her smile⌠Listening to her laugh⌠The truth was that Junpei really didnât know what he wanted to do, but he knew he wanted it to be in service of Chidori. To keep that smile shining⌠Junpei would fight the entire world to give her the ability to look up and grin. To him, that was the future worth chasingâŚ

Once again, Hanae wandered the Kirijo Estate, reflecting upon a time gone by. A time when dozens of people lined at the gates just to get a peek at her and Takeharu. One where her daughter clumsily scaled their orchard trees to proudly bring them fruit. But time marches on.
After she was diagnosed with her illness, Hanae believed her life was over. She would slowly lose the ability to move and speak, all while forgetting who she even was. And yet⌠a miracle occurred. The day she woke up to her daughter crying tears of joy over her body was the day Hanae reclaimed her life. But now that she had her life back, the woman had to come to the hard realization that she did not know what to do with it.
Work felt like a distraction from the growing sense of pain and unease that tugged the depths of her heart. She was still called to come speak at a university from time to time, and she was still consulted on the translations of many obscure languages, but nothing had caught Hanaeâs fancy. Seemingly, her second chance at life was thrice more listless than her first.
The woman entered the kitchen, watching a small handful of maids and butlers bustling about. Some of them were busy at the stove, cooking meals, while others sat around, giggling as they whispered gossip and rumors into each otherâs ears. As soon as Hanae entered the room, everyone fell silent, and all the life in the room seemed to seep out in an instant.
ââŚPlease, be at ease,â the woman asked with a sad smile.
âMadame, is there anything we can get you?â
âWhat I need, you cannot provide,â she bitterly thought.
ââŚI just wish for a moment to myself, alone.â
âAs you wish.â
The Kirijo staff all filtered out of the kitchen, leaving just Hanae to drift through the room, touching all the electrical appliances as she went by. Hanae had never used most of them in her life; that wasnât to say she couldnât cook, though. Her experience has just dulled with time spent away from the block and knife.
She opened the fridge and scanned through the pantry, looking for some kind of convenience food with which she could satiate her hunger. Finally, she found it. Gingerly, she plucked a packaged meat bun out of a sea of foods and ripped open the packaging, placing the snack on a paper plate and putting it in the microwave for the suggested amount of time.
As Hanae watched the bun turn and turn, a burning heat grew in her heart. She wanted, so desperately, to see her again. They hadnât even played their weekend games since that night.
âIsakoâŚâ
Hanae took out her cellphone. It was a rather plain lavender color, but thatâs what she liked about it. The thing possessed a simple beauty to it, which she admired. She scrolled down her contacts list until she landed on one name in particular.
Mitsuru Kirijo
Was calling her daughter in this bout of loneliness truly the best move? Whatever they might share would be superficial and fleeting with the motive of Hanae simply wanting to alleviate the emptiness within her heart. Or, perhaps she should be up front and honest with her daughter for once. To ask her own daughter for such advice, though.
The redheaded womanâs hands shook as indecision claimed her body. The microwaveâs beeping went ignored in Hanaeâs episode of analysis paralysis. Though, steeling her nerves, she pressed the call button.
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
Nothing. It eventually went to her daughterâs voicemail, which didnât even have any sort of personalized message set up. And in return, she left no such message herself. Though to Hanae it was just the early afternoon, for Mitsuruâstill away for her schooling in Americaâit was likely some ungodly hour in the morning.Â
Next, the cursor of Hanaeâs phone scrolled all the way down to another name. One that she didnât want to admit had any old sway over her.
âNo⌠That night was just a moment of weakness,â she told herself. âA woman like me⌠Too much has been placed upon my shoulders for me to give in to the feelings that belong to a girl from an era long goneâŚâ
Thatâs what she told herself, and yet, there was an undeniable reaction her body involuntarily had when her name crossed Hanaeâs mind.
Isako Takeba
Just reading the name made her heart pound faster. Quickly, she snapped her phone shut, letting out a breath that she didnât even realize she had been holding. Her knuckles turned white under the intensity with which she gripped the device.
In a moment of impulse, Hanae stormed away from the kitchen, not in anger, but in fear. Fear of what her heart was about to spur her to do. As she left, a maidâwho had been waiting outsideâlooked inside the kitchen and reached out to her.
âMadame, your food! Donât you-â
âPlease, just save it for later,â she asked, clutching her phone to her heart. âI⌠I reconsidered. Please, let the staff know to not bother me in the solace of my room.â
âUnderstood.â
It wasnât long before Hanae found herself back on her bed, completely enveloped in the memories of just a couple weeks ago. No touch had been as savored as the one that had been shared. No scent as sweet as the ones which contained the sensual longing of another. No sounds as harmonious as two beings becoming oneâŚ
With an intense sense of shame and a heavy heart, Hanae couldnât even look at her phone as she selected the contact and pressed call. The woman looked as though she could cry when she held the phone up to her ear.
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
âHello?â
Hearing her was like an arrow piercing Hanaeâs heart. She felt so weak, so vulnerable, so helplessly ensnared in a trap into which she willingly surrendered herself. There was a profound guilt that accompanied her thoughts, but with every scornful remark she could think of towards her involuntary imaginative vignettes, three more fantasies took their place.
Hanae said, with a trembling voice that dripped with immense fear and shame, but also a burning desire, âI need you.â
And that was all it took.
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
âItâs okayâŚâ
âItâs not okay.â
âItâll be alrightâŚâ
âIt wonât be alright.â
âThereâs nothing to worry about.â
âI⌠I donâtâŚâ Tears stained Hanaeâs eyes as she cried into her hands, her back hunched on the edge of the bed as Isako rubbed her back. âI canât⌠I shouldnâtâŚâ
âAnd why shouldnât you?â
âI am⌠a motherâŚâ
âTo a daughter who is so capable and independent that the world is at her mercy.â
âI am⌠a wifeâŚâ
âTo a wonderful and lucky man who has passed.â
âI⌠I am⌠I amâŚâ
âTell me, Hanae, of all the things you are⌠Are you happy?â
ââŚâ
Hanae dared not answer the question. Doing so wouldâve been an admittance of guilt. As good as signing her own waiver. Her will would not be brokenâcould not be brokenâso easily. And yet⌠If there was not at least some part of her that didnât wish to howl âNo!â for the entire Kirijo Estate, no, the entire world to hear, Isako would not be sitting next to her in bed.
âLet me ask a different questionâŚâ Isako purred, putting her arm around Hanae and pulling her in, letting the woman rest her head on her shoulder. âAre you happy when Iâm here?â
ââŚYes.â
âAre you happy when I hear my voice?â
âYesâŚâ
âWhen you feel my touch?â
ââŚYesâŚâ
âWhen you think about me?â
âY-YesâŚâ
âDo you hate that you feel that way?â
ââŚâ
Hanaeâs lip trembled. She didnât have to speak for that question to be answered in an instant. Her entire body tensed up and trembled, prompting Isako to run her hands through her old friendâs hair.
âHanae⌠Lying to me and everyone else is one thing, but lying to yourself is dangerousâŚâ
âI am sorry you love such a weak-willed womanâŚâ Hanae sobbed, clutching the back of Isakoâs blouse. âToo weak to push you away, yet not strong enough to surrender to the throes of my heart⌠I am the most deplorable kind of woman, Isako.â
âNo, you are not,â Takeba whispered. âBut you are in desperate need of help.â
âThen pleaseâŚâ Hanae said with a choked sob, taking Isakoâs hand and guiding it to press against her abdomen. âHelp me tonight⌠If you wouldâŚâ
âIâve always been at your service.â
âIsakoâŚâ
âHanaeâŚâ
There were no grand gestures; there was no extreme display of want and lust. That night, there was simply Hanae Kirijo and Isako Takeba together, lying in bed. Hanae, curled up in a sleeping whimper, as Isako kept both her arms around the woman, shielding her in a cocoon of her own making.

ââŚHey, Kotone?â Yukari called out, cracking open the girlâs door. The lights may have been off, leaving the room pitch black, but she knew that her girlfriend was still curled up under the covers. She had been unresponsive to anyone for the past few days. âAre you ready to come out?â
ââŚâ
Yukari stepped inside and closed the door behind her. She crossed over to the bed and sat on the edge, looking down at the mess that lay in it. Kotone hadnât stepped out in days except to use the bathroom; even then, nobody saw her. Food was left by the door, but it was usually only retrieved with sparse bites taken out of it. Largely, Kotone had just spent the last few days in a blur of sleep, sobbing, and despair.
âYou donât have to be ready to talk,â Yukari said, looking down at her with a sigh. âBut⌠please, just let me know if youâre okay.â
ââŚâ
âKotoneâŚâ
âThe world is endingâŚâ she mumbled, tears silently streaming from her eyes. âThe world is ending, and itâs all because I came to Iwatodai⌠If I never came here, everyone-â
âWould still be in danger,â Yukari finished with a firm tone. âRyoji said it himself. Even if you never came here, The Fall wouldâve been inevitable anyway.â
âAll I did was give everyone less timeâŚâ
ââŚI think itâs way better that you came here.â
ââŚâ Kotone slowly rolled over and grimly looked at Yukari with red-stained eyes. âWhy?â
âWell, if we couldnât stop The Fall from coming in the end no matter what, Iâd rather have you be here to fight it with us,â she said, putting a hand on Kotoneâs shoulder. âAnd⌠Well, even if you caused the apocalypse a few months or years early, I wouldnât trade our relationship for that time.â
âHuh?â Kotoneâs eyes went wide. âR-ReallyâŚ?â
âReally.â
âYouâre just-â
âIâm not just saying that,â Yukari frowned. If her girlfriend werenât in such a sorry state, she would probably get actually upset at a comment like that. âYou know, these past few months have been Hell for all of us. But you⌠You remind everybody that life isnât so bad. It confuses me so much how a person whoâs gone through as much as you can still wake up and smile, butâŚâ
Yukari pulled back the blankets and laid down behind Kotone, wrapping the still-motionless girl in her arms.
ââŚitâs okay to show your frown. This time, Iâll be the one to make you smile.â
âYukariâŚâ The girl wiped her eyes, bits of crust where tears had dried scraped off in the process. Her speech was choked as she spoke. âI⌠I thought about it, YukariâŚâ
âAb-â
âAbout killing RyojiâŚâ she said, her voice trembling. âB-But I canât⌠I-Iâd rather let everyone die with a smile, but I canât even give them thatâŚâ
âHeyâŚâ Yukari inched her way forward, pressing her forehead on the back of Kotoneâs head. âHow about we win with a smile instead?â
âBut you heard him⌠We canâtâŚâ
âSince when has Kotone Shiomi let anyone tell her she canât do anything? When the teleporter was broken, didnât you scale 100 floors in Tartarus all on your own just to find that little girl?â
âYeahâŚâ
âWhen that library committee girl told you to not worry about her problems, didnât you take her to shout the truth for the whole school to hear?â
âY-YeahâŚâ
âAndâŚâ Yukari rested her head on the back of Kotoneâs shoulder. âWhen I was at my lowest and said that I hated you, didnât you stay with me until I could smile again?â
âYeah⌠I didâŚâ
âSo donât let Death tell you what you can and canât do now,â she whispered. âIf anyone can surprise Death, itâs Kotone Shiomi. When youâre done with your alone time, let me know. Weâll work on what comes after.â
As Yukari started to get up, she felt Kotone grasp onto the sleeve of her sweater, looking at her with pleading, desperate eyes.
âPlease⌠not yet. I need more alone time⌠with you.â
ââŚâ Yukari warmly smiled and laid back down in bed, pulling the blankets over them both. âDonât worry, Iâll stay with you. And when youâre ready, we can walk out that door and face whatever comes, together with a smile. As long as it takes.â
If you have a pairing or scenario you wanna see, comment here or on AO3!
âSeriously, get away from him! Heâs my boyfriend!â
âIt is my prime directive to be with him!â
âFunny, thatâs mine too, so back off!â
âThreatening me is not a strategic move, Yukari-san.â
Makoto sat on the couch of Iwatodai Dorm, watching the two girls argue back and forth on who apparently had executive ownership over him. He let out a long sigh and slouched down on the couch as Kotone leaned over the back of the furniture, giving him an upside-down smile.
âHey!â
âHeyâŚâ
âWhatâs up?â
âThat,â Makoto sighed, pointing to Aigis and Yukari continuing their argument. Kotone flashed him an âAre you serious?â expression.
âForgive me if I donât pity the millionaire drowning in yen.â
âHuh?â
âCâmon, Makoto, two girls? The answer is both.â
âWhat-â
âBoth,â she interrupted. âThe answer is both. I would have Yukari on the left and Aigis on the right. Sounds like absolute heaven.â
âOh shut up,â he groaned. âI donât want them arguingâŚâ
âWhatâs it over?â
âMe.â
âOk, ok, Iâll give you the cheat code to finish all the conflict,â Kotone whispered, leaning in close to Makotoâs ear. âDate them both.â
âSounds icky.â
âNot if itâs a love triangle.â
âOk, but they love me and not each other. Thatâs not a triangle. Itâs like⌠a love arrow.â
âAnd who shoots arrows? Cupid. So go out there and get your polycule.â
âYou disgust me.â
âI know,â she grinned. âTell me how it works out!â
âYeah, I will.â
As Kotone skipped away, Makoto rose to his feet with a groan. He put a hand between Yukari and Aigis, which ceased all of their arguing. The boy took a deep breath, hoping that he wasnât about to regret his next words in the long run.
âWhy donât we all just, like, date each other and be a throuple?â he asked with a dull expression. âThat way you donât have to fight.â
âWhat?!â Yukari reeled her head back. âIâm not sharing you with-â
âThis sounds like an acceptable compromise,â Aigis agreed. âI suggest a schedule in order to prevent further conflicts. I request Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.â
âHey, why do you get four days? Wait! No, youâre not-â
âIâm kind of tired of you both arguing over me like Iâm the last cookie in the jar,â Makoto said, his tired eyes darting back and forth. âSo⌠if you wonât share me, then find some other way to stop fighting over me, please. Itâs burning me out to listen to you both argue all the time, and I really donât like two people I like fighting with each other, soâŚâ
âSo you want me to share you?â Yukari frowned.
âYukari-san, I heard that elementary schoolers learn how to share as a basic lesson. Did you skip this portion of your schooling?â
âIâm gonna-â
âAhem.âÂ
The girls looked at Makoto, then back at each other. Yukari eventually puffed out her cheeks in frustration and crossed her arms.
âFine. Iâll try.â
âI find this compromise agreeable,â Aigis nodded. âAbout sharing rights-â
âUm, yeah, no,â Makoto said, shaking his head. âIâm not going on a loan schedule. If you want to hang out, just ask to hang out. Worst-case scenario is that we all spend time together.â
âIn that case, I have an excellent group activity we can take part in,â Aigis proposed. Both Makoto and Yukari looked at each other uncertainly. âI believe we will all find it pleasing.â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
Makoto, Yukari, and Aigis all cuddled together on Makotoâs bed, trying to watch a movie together in front of the TV. While three people made the bed rather cramped, at least they could get some real intimate time together. None of them particularly disliked it.
âOk, this was a pretty good suggestion,â Yukari admitted.
âThank you, Yukari-san. And the popcorn you made is buttered to perfection.â
âCan you even taste that?â
âNo, but my analysis has concluded that if I could, I would enjoy it very much.â
They werenât quite sure why, but the comment made Makoto and Yukari start laughing. They covered their mouths, trying their best to conceal the chuckles and snickers, all while Aigis gave them both confused glances.

Kana wasnât sure how she got where she was. Sitting right next to Mitsuru Kirijo, eating from the same takoyaki box. It didnât seem real to her. For Kotone to have canceled but insist that Mitsuru and Kana still go and eat⌠it was bliss.
âSuch a bold tasteâŚâ Mitsuru admired, chewing and nodding. She turned to Kana with a curious expression. âIs all takoyaki like this?â
âNo, this is an Iwatodai special,â the nervous girl said, trying to appear as casual as possible while hiding her trembling frame. âIâve grown up here my whole life, so Iâve just grown to like the taste of this one⌠I don't think Iâd like any other takoyaki more, even if it was objectively better.â
âHow interestingâŚâ The redhead put an amused little smile on her face. âThat reminds me of how my mother talks of Kyotoâs food.â
âD-Do, um, you have any food you particularly like?â
âIâm quite fond of various teas.â
âOh! Me too!â
âTruly?â she warmly smiled. âNot many of my dormmates have a palate for finer drinks, but one of my favorites is Imperial Gold Tip, also known as âShanghai Breakfast Teaâ in England. Have you ever heard of it?â
âO-Oh⌠umâŚâ Kanaâs face turned red. Was she more willing to look ignorant or like an idiot?
âDonât fret if you havenât. Itâs particularly hard to acquire here. My father used to chastise me for not enjoying a more Japanese teaâŚâ She looked down at the box of takoyaki with a sad smile. âItâs strange to say, but I miss that⌠He hardly had time to even see me in person in the last few years. I wish we couldâve talked about tea just one last timeâŚâ
âSenpaiâŚâ
Kana wanted to reach out. She wanted to comfort the girl she admired so much. But⌠they were such a world away that Kana didnât think she could probably spend her whole life reaching and never even come close to her. Still⌠She had to try.
âHow close were you?â
âHuh?â
âYour⌠father,â Kana quietly said. âI canât pretend to know how you feel. My own parents barely remember I exist some days. But I know what itâs like to wish that someone you love would acknowledge and talk to you.â
ââŚâ Mitsuru let out a shaky sigh and rubbed her eyes. âIâm sorry, Yokuno. I should not be forcing all of this onto you.â
âItâs alright, really,â Kanna said, letting loose a cynical laugh. If she looked down, talking to Mitsuru like a normal person wasnât so bad. She hardly even thought about what she was saying before the words escaped her lips. âMaybe itâs messed up, but itâs nice to feel wanted by someoneâŚâ
Mitsuru looked over at Kana, who stared at the concrete with such intensity that youâd think the girl was trying to look at something a whole galaxy away. There were only so many things she couldâve said, but Kana was fairly certain that wasnât one of the right ones.
ââŚâ Mitsuru let out a sad sigh of sadness and regret. âThe takoyaki is coldâŚâ
âHuh?â
âThe takoyaki,â she repeated, holding up the box. âItâs gone cold.â
âOh⌠Iâll still eat it if you want. Iâd hate to waste it.â
âYokuno, perhaps youâd like to accompany Shiomi and me on our excursion to the arcade Wednesday afternoon,â Mitsuru offered. âI enjoyed our time together.â
âY-You did?!â Kanaâs heart nearly leapt out of her chest.
âYes,â she nodded with a smile. âIf youâll excuse me, I have to leave now, but-â Mitsuru paused and put a hand on her mouth. âOh, wait, how inconsiderate of me! Would you like more takoyaki to take home to your family?â
âO-Oh, um⌠I couldnât-â
âPlease, allow me,â the redhead insisted, taking a wallet out of her purse. The thick stack of cash she took out couldâve probably been used as a doorstopper. âHow many family members do you have?â
âI⌠Uh⌠I-I have a m-mother and father⌠a-and two siblings-â
âAh, four⌠I better buy eight boxes just to make sure. Oh, better make it ten to have a couple for yourself as well.â
âWha-â The dizzying thought of walking home with 60 pieces of takoyaki intimidated Kana beyond belief. âB-But how will I carry all of that?â
âIâve got bags,â the woman behind the grill enthusiastically cheered. âIf you wanna buy 10 boxes of takoyaki, I ainât arguing! You sure you donât want to buy a neat 12?â
âOh⌠It would be best to take one back for myself, plus another for Shiomi since she couldnât join us. Thank you!â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
Kana returned home with a bag in each hand, each one containing five warm boxes of takoyaki. For the first time in a while, she wasnât coming back with a frown or dejected look in her eyes. There was no gloomy air that trailed behind her when she entered the room. In fact, Kana seemed to bring a brightness into the home that the girl didnât even know she possessed.
âWhere did you get those?â her younger sister asked, leaning over the edge of the family couch. She was still in elementary school but already had developed a keen talent for mischief-making. âDid you steal that?â
âNo,â she chuckled, continuing to the kitchen and putting the food on the counter. âA⌠friend bought them for me. Everyone gets two boxes, okay?â
âOkaaaay!â
âDonât take more than what youâve been told, got it?â Kana said, raising an eyebrow. âYou know Ganzan will throw a fit if you take his.â
âThen Iâll take yours!â
âHmph.â Kana smiled and ruffled her little sisterâs head. âMischevious little SoruâŚâ
âKana?â The girl turned around to find her mother standing next to the counter, examining the ten boxes of takoyaki with worry. âPlease tell me you didnât spend all your allowance on thisâŚâ
âNo, no, a friend bought it for me.â
ââŚâ Her mother narrowed her eyes with a disapproving frown. âShow me your wallet.â
Kana did as she was told, giving her mother her wallet and watching the woman count to make sure every single yen was accounted for.
âSome friend you have, then,â she whistled. âWhatâs her name? We have to give her something to repay this.â
âSheâŚâ Kana smiled and looked down, small patches of red flushing her cheeks. âMy friend⌠Iâm friends with Mitsuru Kirijo.â

Once again, Fuuka and Natsuki found themselves on the school roof eating lunch together. Thanks to Fuuka actually getting really good at cooking, she had made them both bento boxesâa courtesy, of course, of Kotoneâs generous teachings and demonstrations. It genuinely impressed Natsuki how her friendâs food had gone from something she felt bad that the trash can had to eat into food that she wanted seconds of.
âUm⌠heyâŚâ Fuuka quietly cleared her throat. âI was wonderingâŚâ
âCareful, I told the same thing to our teacher, and he looked at me pretty concerned.â Natsuki grinned at her own joke and looked over to her friend. âOk, yeah, whatâs up?â
âW-Well⌠Tomorrow I would normally spend time in my dorm on my computer or doing something with my other friends, but all of them have something going on this Sunday. A-And Mitsuru-senpai told me that it wasnât healthy to stay inside so much, and Yukari-chan told me that if I donât get out every now and then, my s-stomach might put on some weight, b-but you know, Iâm still kinda small, so I didnât take her seriously. But since-â
âAre you getting to the part of this story where Iâm relevant?â Natsuki yawned, taking out her phone and typing a text. âYouâre doing that thing again.â
âH-Huh? âT-That thingâŚ?â What do you-â
âThe ramble-y, over-explain-y thing.â The girl looked up from her phone and smirked. âYou forget that Iâm, like, totally just a dum-dum. With me, just use a few simple words, ok?â
âOk⌠Do you want to hang out on Sunday?â
âHm, okay, yeah,â she said, nodding almost instantly. âGot nothing better to do.â
âN-Nice! Good! CoolâŚâ
âHey Fuuka?â
âYes?â
âI can tell youâre already overthinking this. Just chill out.â
âRight!â Fuuka took some deep breaths. âSorry, I guess itâs pretty obvious that I donât hang out with a lot of people, huh?â
âFukka, Iâve known you for like, half my life, so I know for a fact that youâd be a shut-in if you didnât have friends who dragged you out.â
âI canât argue with that,â she said. Both girls let out a small chuckle.
Normally, that kind of comment would make a person feel bad, but with the way Natsuki said it, Fuuka couldnât be upset. For her, it sounded more like endearing honesty than maliceâthe true words that came from a friend with years of history.
âI bet itâll look pretty funny to see.â
âHuh? What do you mean?â
âYou know, me and you,â Natsuki grinned, bouncing a pointed finger between the two of them. âYou know, side-by-side, walking around together.â
ââŚWhat about it?â
âYou seriously donât see it?â she laughed. âPeople are gonna see you following my heels and think Iâm still bullying you or something.â
âB-Bullying me?! B-But youâre not!â
âYeah,â smirked Natsuki. âBut the tough-as-hell gyaru dragging around the dainty, shy little girl? Oh, itâs a perfect image.â
âI think Iâve read a manga like thatâŚâ Fuuka thought.
âI-If youâre worried about your image, we-â
âNah, I donât really care about what people say about me,â she shrugged. âMy reputationâs already not too great.â
âOhâŚâ
âThatâs why I need my little frail friend with me to boost my reputation. Make it seem like Iâve bullied some girl into being my social slave.â Natsuki took one last bite of her bread before finishing the food. âIâm, like, totally joking, of course. I donât care what those assholes think about me. If you donât want that image though, we can just stay in and hang out.â
âN-No, Iâll be fineâŚâ
âYou sure?â
âYeah!â
âThen Iâm going to the bathroom and back to class.â The gyaru got up and threw up a wave. âSee you then.â
âSee youâŚâ
âIs she right?â Fuuka thought, clutching the strap of her bag. âWas that a warning? Or was she just being Natsuki-chan, like alwaysâŚ?â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
Sunday came much faster than Fuuka expected. At first, everything felt really normal. They walked and talked, mostly about recent movies and trends from both of their social spheres. The two walked around a few markets and a couple strip malls, trying to find somewhere that really caught their attention. Overall, it felt like a really standard hangoutâplain, even.
But then, Fuuka started to notice what she thought Natsuki had been talking about. The looks that people gave them as they passed by. There were confused glances, curious expressions, and suppressed giggles from onlookers. She could hardly pay attention to whatever Natsuki was saying; Fuuka held her arms together, as if trying to shrink and be even smaller.
âMaybe Natsuki-chan was rightâŚâ she thought to herself. âThey think Iâm getting dragged around and bullied⌠Why are they looking at me with pity if Iâm just with my friendâŚ?â
Fuuka drifted her eyes towards Natsuki, analyzing her and trying to identify everything her friend had that she didnât.
Element oneâconfidence. Natsuki walked with such confidence that it was like she owned the whole street. It didnât matter who they passed or was in their wayâNatsuki strode with the same level of authority. The girl walked with the top buttons of her shirt undone, but it wasnât to be cheeky or to show off. It was as if to say, âYeah, Iâm like this. Try and stop me!â to the world. And the way she talked⌠Fuuka was sure that there was nobody who could win an argument with sheer force like Natsuki.
Element twoâstyle. Natsukiâs clothing and accessories just looked so natural and effortless on her, as if they were tailor-made for the girl. And her makeup? Fuuka could hardly imagine her without it (though on occasion, she has witnessed the sight).
Element threeâattitude. With the way that Natsuki-
âUm, hello?â Natsuki asked, snapping her fingers in front of Fuukaâs face. The teal-haired girl snapped out of whatever trance her analysis paralysis put her in, looking around with a flustered face.
âI- Huh? What-â
âI was talking and you just stopped in the middle of the street with that weird look on your face. Took a second for me to realize you just let yourself drag behind,â she said with a frown. âAnd with how still you were standing? It was like you were possessed or something. Youâre not coming down with that Apathy Syndrome thing, right?â
âN-No, Iâm notâŚâ
âShe didnât even notice for a second? Natsuki-chan stands out among a sea of people, and IâŚâ Fuuka nervously gulped. âI disappear among twoâŚâ
âHey, you sure youâre okay?â
âY-Yeah, IâŚâ Fuuka glanced over at the store she was in front of, and an idea fired off in her brain. âI just wanted to look at something!â
âHm?â
Fuuka gestured over to the clothing store. It was a bit of a gimmick shop dedicated to selling clothes and accessories made for âReal Punks, Delinquents, and Gyarus!â Fuuka found it almost laughably cheesy, but as soon as she gestured towards the store, Natsuki got a smirk as her eyes lit up.
âAh, you wanna finally try having some real style?â
âWell, I-I⌠Itâs just-â
âSay less,â she interrupted, grabbing Fuukaâs arm and walking away.
âW-Wait! Natsuki-chan, slow down!â Fuuka stumbled across the sidewalk, trying to keep up with her speeding friend. âW-Where are we going?! The storeâs back-â
âIf youâre gonna try this whole âstyle changeâ thing, no friend of mine is half-assing it.â
âB-But I wasnât-â
âYeah, yeah, whatever,â she waved it off. âYou totally werenât staring at that second-rate tryhard punk store like it was gonna fix your whole vibe.â
âI⌠just thought it looked interestingâŚâ Fuuka mumbled.
âMy friend isnât about to shop at some wannabe shop thatâs trying way too hard,â Natsuki scoffed. âIâm taking you to the place that really sells what youâre talking about.â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
The moment they stepped inside the store, Fuuka felt completely out of place. Someone as quiet and modest as her really had no place in a store selling all the things that it did. The entire store just radiated a boldness and confidence that Fuuka lacked. Natsuki, meanwhile, looked right at home.
âAlright,â her friend said, clapping her hands together and rubbing them, bouncing her eyes between Fuuka and the clothes. âLetâs see what weâre working with.â
âW-Working withâŚ? What-â
Before Fuuka could say much more, Natsuki had already started scanning the racks. She filtered through a mountain of clothing, pulling out a few select pieces with a practiced ease.
âMay this⌠No,â she decided, shoving one back on the rack. âToo stiff for you.â
âNatsuki-chan, I-â
âShhh, Iâm working,â the gyaru requested, going back to the rack before plucking a top off and holding it up to Fuukaâs body. âThis one⌠is a maybe.â
âW-Wouldnât that show too much of my-â
âWhatever you were about to finish that sentence with, the answer is no. The point of gyaru is to have a kind of really bold sexy look. Something youâreâno offenseâlacking.â
âI-I just donât think that one in particular would suit meâŚâ
âDid I ask?â Natsuki shot back, though there was no real malicious bite to her words.
ââŚSorry.â
âThatâs another thing. Stop apologizing for everything,â she muttered.
âO-Oh, okayâŚâ
âThatâs right, Natsuki-chan hardly apologizes for anything⌠If I just mimic how she acts, maybe Iâll look like I fit inâŚâ
âHere, take âem.â Natsuki shoved an entire small pile of clothes into Fuukaâs arms, making her knees wobble just carrying them. âWe can start with these.â
âA-All of these?!â
âYeah. Changing roomâs over there,â the rough girl said, pointing to a small row of divided stalls. Fuuka looked at the rooms, then back at Natsuki. âWhat? Iâm already helping you pick them out. You need my help changing clothes too?â
âN-No, Iâm goingâŚâ
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
âIf you were in a bathroom, Iâd ask if you fell in,â Natsuki barked, knocking on the changing room door. âCâmon, how long does it take?!â
âP-Please promise not to laughâŚâ
âPromise not to say something stupid,â the gyaru grinned. âThatâs not a promise either of us can really make, though, is it?â
âJust⌠please donât laughâŚâ
Fuuka unlocked the changing room and stepped out, hugging her sides as if she wanted to just shrink away completely. The first thing Natsuki had settled on making her try was a teal crop top paired with a pair of jean shorts. The clothes werenât bad or anything, and they didnât even look terrible on her. But both Fuuka and Natsuki could tell they just didnât feel like her.
âS-So? N-Natsuki-chanâŚ?â
Natsuki was still standing there, scratching her chin in deep thought. By all accounts, everything about that outfit should have worked for someone with a body like Fuukaâs. She didnât have an embarrassing or awkward silhouette, and she even walked around with it fairly naturally, but⌠There was just a certain stiffness that Fuuka had while modeling the clothes, as if she were wearing a costume.
ââŚHuh,â Natsuki finally said after a long period of silence.
âH-Huh? What does that mean? D-Do I look bad?â
âNo, no. Itâs fine,â she replied. At least for Natsuki, that was an unusually⌠neutral remark. âWhat do you think of it?â
âW-Well⌠I-IâŚâ Fuuka took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She thought about the kind of confident person she wanted to be and looked at her friend. âI think it looks nice⌠I-I like it. A lot!â
Natsukiâs eyes narrowed as her brow furrowed, not in an expression of confusion, but one of concern.
âAre⌠you sure?â
âY-Yeah!â Fuuka vigorously nodded. âItâs cute, a-and itâs a lot closer to your style!â
âWhy do you want to be close to my style?â
âI⌠Itâs just an observation.â
ââŚRight.â Natsuki let out a deep sigh, rubbing the back of her neck and dismissively waving her hand. There was something about this that didnât sit right with her. âThen⌠I guess on to the next one.â
âO-Okay!â
Fuuka went back into the changing stall and clicked the lock. While Natsuki heard the sounds of Fuuka rummaging through more clothes, she thought about that outfit. How obviously uncomfortable and out of place her friend both looked and felt in it.
âFuuka, what the hell are you trying to do to yourself?â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
The same pattern continued for the rest of the time that they were in the shop. Fuuka would try something on, look wildly uncomfortable, then insist that she liked it. The whole thing made Natsuki feel wildly uncomfortable and upset to witness. Fuuka only looked truly comfortable when she got to step out in her own clothes again.
âYou ready to bounce or what?â
âYeahâŚâ
The pair didnât say much as they approached the register. After a moment of hesitation, Fuuka placed a couple of the items that she had kept with her on the counter.Â
âI-Iâll take these, pleaseâŚâ
The cashier smirked as she rang Fuuka up. The teal-haired girl was mesmerized by how long and shiny her nails were.
âGreat choice!â
âT-Thank-â Fuuka hesitated. She thought about what Natsuki might say and leaned against the counter. âY-Yeah! I mean, of course it is!â Fuukaâs speech sounded clumsy and stilted, as if she were reading off a script for a scene she wasnât sure of the context of. âItâs, like⌠super cute, right?â
ââŚYeah, uh-huh,â the cashier nodded, clearly a bit confused but not caring enough to say anything. Natsuki, however, started looking visibly annoyed.
âAnd, um⌠yeah,â Fuuka continued, trying her best to keep up the poor charade. âI-Iâll totally rock this and stuffâŚâ
âIâm sure you will, hon.â The cashier gave Fuuka her remaining money and handed over the bag. âThanks for shopping. Come again.â
âY-Yeah! No problem! M-My friend and I w-will, like, totally come back!â
âAlright, letâs go,â Natsuki decided, grabbing Fuuka by the wrist.
âW-Wait! Natsuki-chan!â
Her friend yanked Fuuka outside, annoyance plastered all over her face. She had clearly had enough of something, but Fuuka just quickly started talking before Natsuki could get a word in.
âSo where should we go next?â
âFuuka-â
âI think thereâs a cafĂŠ nearby that-â
âFuuka.â
âI think if we run now, we can-â
âFuuka! Shut the fuck up!â A few people stared at Natsuki raising her voice, but she didnât really care. Her chest heaved in anger. âIâve fucking had it! Why the hell are you doing all this?â
âD-Doing wha-â
âThis!â she said, stomping her foot and gesturing to the shop, then at Fuukaâs bags. âThe store, the clothes, the attitude! All of it!â
âI-Iâm not-â
âYouâre a shitty liar,â Natsuki spat. âI could tell you didnât like anything you wore. I took you to that shop because I thought weâd just dress you up and have a good laugh. But what the hell are you trying to do, being a person like you and wearing clothes like that?â
âI-I just wantedâŚâ Fuuka looked like she was on the verge of tears. âI just wanted to be a bit more like you, Natsuki-chan!â
With that declaration, a thick silence hung between them. Natsukiâs trembling lip curled into a snarl.
âWhy the fuck do you wanna be like me?â
âI-I thought if I did⌠I-I wouldnât look so pathetic when we were together⌠M-Maybe Iâd look like I belong as one of your friendsâŚâ
Natsuki clenched her fists.
âFuuka⌠you colossal dumbass!â
âWh-â
âYouâre a dumbass if thatâs what you really wanted!â
âI-I know it sounds stupid, but-â
âNo, it is stupid,â Natsuki snapped. âSince when do you care about what random people on the street think?â
âI-Itâs just that I felt so out of place that-â
âYour solution was to start pretending to be someone else? Do you know how dumb you sound for a smart girl right now?â
âI wasnât pretending!â Fuuka insisted. âI just thought if I tried harder to be more like you, I could look like I belonged and I wouldnât have toâŚâ
âWouldnât have to what?â
âTo⌠be embarrassed,â she admitted. âI wouldnât have to be ashamed of being such a nobody like myself walking next to someone who stands out like youâŚâ
âYou said it yourself⌠We look strange together. People probably think youâre dragging me around, or bullying me, orâŚâ Her voice trailed off in a pathetic whimper. âI didnât want to look like thatâŚâ
âFuuka⌠Youâre seriously pissing me off right now.â
Fuukaâs head snapped up as her eyes went wide.
âI-I am?! I-Iâm sorry, I didnât mean-â
âCan you just stop talking already?!â Natsuki howled, frustration dripping from her sharpened voice. âYou donât need to âmatch me.â Nobody fucking needs you to act different, dress different, or talk different! Youâd just be a completely different fucking person! And that Fuuka? I donât want her.â
âI just thought-â
âYeah, well, you thought wrong!â Fuuka didnât try responding anymore; she just looked down and trembled. Natsuki let out a sigh and ran her fingers through her own hair, her voice calming down. âYouâve been weird as hell ever since you wanted to go into that store. Not because youâre being yourselfâbut because youâre not.â
âI⌠I donâtâŚâ
âFine, then Iâll say it in simple words. I donât like this,â Natsuki said, emphasizing each word. âI donât like you acting like this.â
âN-Natsuki-chanâŚâ
âYouâre not loud, youâre not pushy, youâd never talk like that, and you definitely donât wear stuff that exposes any skin.â
âI-I knowâŚâ Fuuka mumbled. âI just wanted to look like I belonged⌠So I could be with youâŚâ
âBetterâŚ? For meâŚ?â Natsuki paused, looking at the trembling girl in front of her. She let out another long sigh before letting her face soften. Though her words were still firm, Natsuki was a bit quieter and spoke softly. âThatâs not better, itâs just hella fake.â
âFuuka⌠Just be yourself. Seriously, donât try to be me.â The gyaru paused and looked away, the next sentence slipping out with a more natural, tender flow than the speaker intended. âIâve always liked you the way you were.â
Fuuka jerked her head up to look at Natsuki, but the girl wouldnât lock eyes with her anymore.
âReallyâŚ?â
ââŚYeah,â she mumbled. âYouâre good how you are, so donât change for some shitty guy or girl, ok? If you do, Iâll beat the hell out of âem.â
ââŚâ
âIf thatâs all youâve got to say⌠then letâs go,â Natsuki sighed. âMaybe we can make it to the coffee shop before they run out of seasonal spice.â
âNatsuki-chan⌠Iâm sorry.â
âTry saying something else.â
âIâŚâ Fuuka hesitated before mustering a small smile. âThank you.â
âFor?â
âBeing honest with me⌠Not letting me make such a bad choiceâŚâ
Natsuki didnât respond right away. She just turned her head and blew a small strand of hair out of her face.
âYeah, whatever⌠You were acting super weird, so I had to do something.â Natsuki pointed to the clothes in her hands. âSo whatâre you going to do with those? Theyâre too small to fit me.â
âHm⌠Maybe Yukari-san would like them.â
âWhat about the student council president?â Natsuki smirked, going back to talking while they walked. âWhat a pic that would be⌠The prez in such revealing clothes? Oh, now that would be a story for the agesâŚâ
âI-I donât think she would quite wear these,â Fuuka nervously chuckled. âBut⌠I suppose these days, anything could happen.â

âOoooo, romance!â Kotone sang, giggling to herself as she bit into her ice cream. âYouâve come to the perfect place if you wanna know about that.â
âPlease donât make me doubt it,â Yuko remarked, gently licking her cone. She and Kotone watched people pass by Port Island station as they relaxed on a bench and talked. âIâve just never been in a relationship before or really chased after anyone but Rio⌠Iâm pretty clueless on where to start.â
âFirst step!â Kotone reached into her bag and plucked out a box of treats. âAlways keep something sweet on hand. Pocky, chocolate bar, lollipop, something. Sharing sweets is an easy lovey-dovey thing.â
âI donât think you know what âlovey-doveyâ means.â
âHey, you came to me for advice. Besides, everyone loves sweets. Itâs like, illegal not to.â
âBut Rioâs kind of a health nut.â
âBah, Yukari was too, but it only takes a bit of nudging to get them to the dark side,â the auburn friend said with a dark grin. âAnd now when she tastes chocolate, she thinks about me!â
âSounds like the same way you train a dog.â
âNah, thereâs no clickers involved here.â Kotone raised a finger to her chin. âAt least not yet.â
âJeezâŚâ Yuko shuddered. âIt was weird enough walking in on you two making out on the locker room floor⌠Youâre lucky that was me and not someone whoâd use that as blackmail.â
âWorth it,â she dreamily sighed. âBut this is about you, not me. Why not just start off with some small gestures first?â
âWhat did you have in mind?â
âWell, the most basic of basic gestures would be hand holding,â she explained. âHold her hand a lot! If youâre sitting together, grab her hand! If you two are going somewhere, her palm belongs to you! Be bold about it too; kiss her hand sometimes just to make her feel special!â
âYou really think Rio is into that kinda stuffâŚ?â Yuko wondered aloud. âIâve never really seen her be big into those cheesy romance gestures.â
âWell, if weâre going off of things we know she likes, youâve got slim pickings,â Kotone retorted, taking a bite from her waffle cone. âSorry, but I canât think of many super sweet and romantic couples activities that involve sports and dietician work.â
âOk, ok, I get it,â the team manager sighed. âThis is so hardâŚâ
âYouâll be a pro at it by the time Iâm through with you!â
âI donât know why, but that statement just fills me with dreadâŚâ
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
âRomantic advice, eh? So you wanna learn about the techniques of the master romancer, so you came straight to the source, huh?â
âNope,â Rio said, slurping up a string of ramen noodles. âBut I did want to ask you for advice.â
âOuch, cold,â mumbled Kenji, also indulging in a bowl of ramen. âIâll do what I can, but Yukoâs kind of a different demographic from my usual-â
âYeah, I know. Focus on me this time.â
âRight, right, yeah. YukoâŚâ Kenji scratched his chin. âWhat does she like?â
ââŚâ Rio paused her eating and looked at him. âWeâve all been friends since we were 8-9 years old, and you canât think of one thing that Yuko likes?â
âAh, well, I⌠She likes hitting me!â the boy exclaimed, rubbing his arm. âThatâs, uh, a pastime I know she likes.â
âHm⌠True⌠I can work with thatâŚâ Rio nodded, making Kenjiâs eyes go wide. âOh, no, not hitting you. Maybe we can go on a date to the gym!â
âHm, the gym? Sounds like a lousy place to me, but⌠this is you and Yuko weâre talking about here.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âYouâre not normal girls, you know?â
âIs that bad?â
âI donât think soâŚ?â Kenji said it slowly and uncertainly, as if not sure what response would get him a scolding.
âThanks for the confidence, Romancer-sama,â Rio sighed.
âIf you want my opinion, you shouldnât focus on the things she likes so much,â Kenji advised, holding the ramen to his lips and drinking some of the bowl. âShe already does things she likes. You gotta give her something that she doesnât normally get.â
âHmâŚâ Rio held her hand to her chin and thought for a minute. âThat sounds right⌠I think it makes sense. Everyone loves the thrill of a new experience!â
âEr, well, kinda,â the boy shrugged. âI was going to suggest some things to make her feel like a girl.â
ââŚhuh?â
âTry makeup with her, go clothes shopping, look at jewelry, give her flowersâall that stuff. Girls like Yuko act all tough on the outside, but at their core they just wanna be pampered, treated special, and get told theyâre cute.â
âWhere did you learn that?â
âRead a manga,â he said with a nod. âBacked by real science too.â
âWell, if itâs backed by real scienceâŚâ Rio let out a sigh and held her head in her hands. âUgh, who am I kidding? I donât know how to pamper someone!â
âIâm sure youâll figure it out.â
âI asked you here so you could help me, not so you could eat while I panic,â she frowned. âI wouldâve asked Kotone, but she already had plans.â
âOuch, it sucks being a backup choiceâŚâ
âSorryâŚâ Rio rubbed her temples and looked down at her half-eaten bowl. Her face fell into a defeated frown. âI donât know, I just want to make her feel specialâŚâ
âIf your heartâs in the right place, Iâm sure sheâll enjoy anything you do.â
âYou think so?â
âYeah, I mean, sheâs always enjoyed anything as long as youâre there,â he said with a small laugh. Kenji finished slurping down his broth and looked over at Rio with a smirk. âDude, youâre overthinking this way too much. Sheâs been down to do anything you ask as long as youâll be there. She wonât complain no matter what you do.â
ââŚâ Rio picked her utensil back up and skillfully picked up some noodles. âHey Kenji⌠Tell me more about pampering Yuko with that girly stuff.â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
âCome on, just text her,â Kotone pestered. âJust do itttttt!â
âStop leaning over my shoulder,â Yuko insisted, trying to push her away. âSheâs my girlfriend, not yours!â
âBut Iâm so nosy when it comes to other peopleâs love lives!â
âYeah, I can tellâŚâ Yuko looked down at her phone, uncertain of actually doing what Kotone had just spent two hours training her to do. âI-I donât know, maybe Rio-â
âDo ittt!â
âBut-â
âIf you donât, Iâll just take your phone and text her myself.â
âEw, no.â The tanned girl hugged her phone to her chest. âIâve seen your chat history with Yukari. We arenât like that.â
âThen get on it!â
âFine, fine!â Yuko took a deep breath and started texting.
Yuko Nishiwaki
> Hey, do you wanna go out tomorrow?
> I mean, like, spend the day out together
> U donât have to plan anything. I can take care of our activities.
Rio Iwasaki
> Sounds great!
> Actually, I have some things I also want us to do together
Yuko Nishiwaki
> Really?
Rio Iwasaki
> Theyâre a surprise
Yuko Nishiwaki
> Well mine are too
> so HA
Rio Iwasaki
> Canât wait!
> Come by my place tonight?
Yuko Nishiwaki
> ?
> Thatâs sudden
Rio Iwasaki
> Need to show you something important
Yuko Nishiwaki
> Iâll be there then
> Everything ok?
Rio Iwasaki
> Donât worry itâs nothing bad
> Just something I should tell you in person
> Then I have something in mind that we can do together
> My parents are out of town for a few days, so dont worry about them
Yuko Nishiwaki
> Count on me then
Rio Iwasaki
> Thank you, Yuko
> >3
> <4
> <3
Yuko Nishiwaki
> <3
âGotta appreciate how forward she is,â Yuko chuckled.
âOh my goshâŚâ Kotone clutched her chest as if her heart had stopped. âYuko, she just asked you to her room. While her parents are gone. To talk about and do something in private! I canât believe my protĂŠgĂŠ is speedrunning to third base⌠You may even make it all the way homeâŚâ
âIâm not hitting any bases, perv.â Yuko rolled her eyes and gave Kotone a small shove, cracking up an involuntary smirk. âYou hang out with that Iori guy too much.â
âShush, this isnât about me! Youâre about to taste her-â
Yuko took her water bottle and splashed a bit of water into Kotoneâs face. It wasnât enough to soak her clothes, but it did visibly annoy her. The auburn girl balled up her fists and wiped her face with a giddy smirk.
âYouâll regret that!â
âTry and make me!â
That day, the onlookers of Port Island Station got a good view of two girls chasing each other, one with vengeance in her eyes while the other sloshed a bottle of water at her. Some thought they were crazy; others thought it was inappropriate. Everyone agreed that the modern youth needed to learn some restraint.
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
âYou can, um, make yourself at home,â Rio said as they entered her room. The volleyball captain gave an embarrassed chuckle at her own words. âIâm saying that like youâve never been in here beforeâŚâ
Yuko had indeed been there many times before and admired how minimalist she lived. Just a single bookshelf half-filled with mooksâmostly school textbooks, diet and biology books, athlete biographies, sports almanacs, and one of two sports-themed manga. In one corner, she had a desk with a small light stationed, while in another she kept a few bits of workout equipment; she even had a foam mat to work out on. Sometimes, the intensity of Rioâs dedication worried Yuko. The actual bed itself seemed relatively forgotten in the room, having been shoved into the corner and neglected; its sheets were rustled, wrinkled, and loosely hung on while a large, thick blanket had been haphazardly spread across the mattress. In the middle was a small coffee table close to the ground with two places to sit set up on either side.
âOh, thatâs new,â Yuko remarked, pointing at the table as they sat down.
âItâs a bit broken,â she admitted, rocking it back and forth. Yuko listened to the table creak and watched it threaten to buckle. âI wouldnât sit on it or anythingâŚâ
âNoted,â Yuko chuckled. âSo, I donât wanna rush this whole hang-out session or anything, but Iâm dying to know! What did you want to say to me?â
âRightâŚâ Rio looked down, giving an audible nervous gulp. Yuko watched her face start turning bright red, and for a fraction of a second she contemplated if Kotone hadnât been far off in her wild assumptions. âEver since we kissed⌠we havenât talked much about⌠us.â
âOh⌠No, I guess we havenâtâŚâ
âIâll be the one to say it thenâŚâ Rio took a deep breath, steeling herself before practically shouting, âYuko Nishiwaki, I love you! I-I donât mean that in the way of âtemporary loveâ or a âmomentary flingâ kind of way! Ever since we kissed, I havenât been able to look at you the same way! I want to hold you in my arms and be held by you! I wonder if youâre feeling ok all the time! I want us to be alone because my heart flutters whenever itâs just you and me, like I just scored the winning point in a championship match!â
âR-RioâŚâ Yukoâs brain felt like it was short-circuiting. Rio had always been a bit blunt and up front, which she loved about her. This, though, was overwhelming.
âI-Iâm not done! But youâve got my heart under some spell! I think about you all the time! On my runs, at the gym, during practice, in class, in the halls, while I eat, sometimes even while I sleep! I feel like a prisoner of my own heart, and Yuko Nishiwaki, I gave you the key myself!â
âI⌠What are you saying?â
âIâm saying that I shouldnât have let you go that day without doing this!â Rio leapt up from where she sat and crawled next to Yuko, grabbing her hand. âPlease, be my official girlfriend!â
ââŚâ Yukoâs shocked visage slowly turned into a warm smile. âRio Iwasaki, nothing would make me happier.â
âYuko, I⌠Thank youâŚâ Rio mustered a small smile and kissed her new, official, girlfriendâs hand. âAnd one more thing, since only lovers can say this to each other how I mean it⌠I love you.â
âI⌠I love you tooâŚâ
Choking up, Yuko wrapped her arms around Rio in a tight hug; now, though, the team manager couldnât deny that everything about it felt different. Yuko noticed every small place that their bodies connected, as if even a mere brush of contact with Rio sent her nerve endings into a heated frenzy. The way she held her new girlfriend was as if Yuko were on fire and Rio were the water that could extinguish her flames. One moment that seemed to last for minutes but ended all too soon for Yuko.
âOh, I wanna do something first,â Yuko chuckled, taking her phone out. âJust a little picture to tease Kotone. Do a cool pose.â
Yuko held up her phone to snap a picture of them both. While she just threw up a peace sign at first, Rio decided to flex her bicep into the camera. With a small smirk, and maybe a bit of Kotoneâs influence bleeding through, Yuko quickly dipped her head over and planted a kiss on Rioâs flexed muscle. The picture snapped right as Rio turned a deep red and gasped. In her mind, that photo came out perfectly. Yuko loved having a permanent reminder of what Rio looked like at her most vulnerable.
âYou play underhandedly,â Rio remarked, lightly touching her arm where Yuko had smooched, as if she had been burned.
âI picked it up from a friend.â
âI bet I know which one.â
âYeah, I bet you do.â
Both girls laughed, held each otherâs hands, and had as much fun as they could in an apartment all to themselves. To a new pair of girlfriends, one evening alone felt like a day in heaven.

âSenpai⌠Are you sure this is okayâŚ?â
Chihiro wasnât sure why she was so hesitant now. She had taken up Mitsuruâs offer to walk with her back to the private dorm that she stayed at. The treasurer had even smiled and waved when she saw Yukari Takeba on the way up the stairs. So why she was getting cold feet upon the prospect of entering Mitsuruâs actual room, she couldnât say. This was an opportunity that half the school would kill forâŚ
âOf course itâs alright,â the student council president insisted. âAfter all, it wasnât so long ago that I entered your room. This is simply returning the favor.â
âYou always try to be so fair,â Chihiro chuckled.
âCome, I think youâll be pleasantly surprised.â
The redhead opened her door and beckoned her guest to follow. It was now or never. After all, at this stage it wouldâve just been rude to refuse to go in. So Chihiro followed with a pair of shaky legs and closed the door behind her. In record time, her sense of anxiety was replaced with one of awe.
Mitsuru gave her treasurer a proud grin as Chihiro walked into her dorm room. To say that the girl was starstruck would be underselling itâshe was blinded by the posh. Just the carpet that she walked on was fancier than anything she had ever owned. Probably more expensive too.
âWow, SenpaiâŚâ Chihiro gasped. âYou really do live in a completely different world from meâŚâ
âOh, nonsense,â Mitsuru dismissed. âWe are simply two girls with different tastes.â
âMy tastes would probably be something like this if I had Kirijo money,â the treasurer thought. âThough, Iâd probably replace the books with manga and live in my room like an otakuâŚâ
Chihiroâs eyes scanned over all of Mitsuruâs shelves lined with novels and manuscripts. It was almost like she kept a miniature library in her room⌠Though, the treasurerâs eyes settled on one volume in particular that sat at the base of a shelf. It stuck out from the restâbeing a hot pink in contrast to most of the other muted colors decorating book spines.
âYou got a copy of Luna Sailor Super!â Chihiro took it out, flipping through the pages in wonder. âWoah⌠You got the special edition with extra sketches and a small authorâs interview! I didnât know these were still in circulation. Iâve only seen low-quality, pixel-y pictures of them on the forumsâŚâ
âWhen my maid told me every edition that had been printed, I knew I had to have that one,â the heiress proudly grinned. âReading it reminds me of you.â
âR-Really?!â Chihiro almost dropped the book. âW-What do you mean by that?â
âWell, you did let me read some of it at your house. Itâs only natural that the series reminds me of you because of that.â
âO-Oh, rightâŚâ
âWhat are you thinking, Chihiro?â she thought. âStop thinking of your senpai that way⌠This isnât like one of your mangaâŚâ
âI wanted to talk to you about something, actually.â
âHm?â Chihiro was snapped out of her thoughts from the sudden declaration from her senpai. âTalk about what?â
âWell, this. I saw it peeking out from under your bed and wanted to ask about it when I was visiting your home, but it felt rude at the time. When you left to talk to your mother, I found more of them hidden away, all by the same author, so I decided to do my own research.â
Mitsuru opened her nightstand drawer and pulled out something that made Chihiroâs brain do a complete 180. It was a manga with two young women holding each other on the front, with a set of huge pink letters on the front that read, âMore Than Just Gal Pals?â Normally, Chihiro wouldâve found the fact that Mitsuru had this fairly amusing, maybe even funny. But she didnât like the way this conversation was going when it started with the preface that Mitsuru knew she also owned itâŚ
âThatâs⌠an interesting manga you have, Senpai. I didnât think that was your kind of readingâŚâ
âI found it to be quite a good read, indeed,â the redhead nodded, looking at the book with a surprising amount of reverence. âThe painful relationship that the protagonist has for her love interest ruthlessly strikes the heart⌠I even contacted the author herself.â
âSenpai, donât tell me you-â Chihiro furrowed her brow. âHer? Senpai, a woman didnât write that. Hiro Tayakami is a man.â
âHiro Tayakami is a well-constructed pseudonym,â corrected Mitsuru. âSuch a well-known author in this space, and she feels forced to hide her name⌠Do you know where I found her living?â
âI-I donât think itâs-â
âIn a horribly maintained part of Kyotoâa completely different space from my own home. She was days away from becoming homeless. Imagine such a thing existing⌠An author who has sold millions becoming homeless because of her own need to hide her name and a publisher who takes advantage of the genre she writes and the desire for anonymityâŚâ
ââŚâ Chihiro watched Mitsuru sit on her own bed and put the book back in her drawer. âSenpai, itâs not that I donât appreciate all of this, but why does something feel⌠wrong here? A-And⌠why did you track that woman down?!â
âAh, Iâm sorry to say that Iâm not sure what youâre talking about with that first statement, admittedly. But that second one is rather easy to explain,â Mitsuru chuckled.Â
She reached into her side table again and pulled out a binder. Chihiroâs heart stopped. Her blood froze. The treasurer swore that the binder in her senpaiâs hands had been lost about a month ago, so what was it doing with Mitsuru? The redhead let out a giggly sigh as she opened it up and flipped through the pages. Chihiro was mortified.
âYouâre a rather great writer, Fushimi,â Kirijo complimented. âLike always, itâs another area that you sell yourself short in.â
âSenpai⌠IâŚâ Chihiro covered her face as tears pooled in the corners of her eyes, dripping off her lashes. The younger girl dropped to her knees and started crying. âNobody was supposed to see those stories! I-Iâm sorry! You-â
âPlease, Fushimi, stop!â Mitsuru furrowed her brow and put a hand on Chihiroâs shoulder. âI-Iâm sorry if this wasnât the way to approach the subject. I didnât imagine the conversation going this way.â
âN-No, itâs⌠itâs my faultâŚâ Chihiro sniggled, wiping her eyes and shakily standing up. âI-Iâm sorry you read all my w-writing, Senpai⌠I-Itâs really gross and-â
âI found it to be quite beautiful,â her senpai interjected. âThe relationship of the two women throughout the first act was masterfully set up, and the part where they confess their love is truly heartwarming.â
âY-You liked itâŚ?â
âI did,â she nodded with a smile. âAnd so did Jiani-san.â
âHuh?â Chihiro wiped more tears from her eyes. âI must have missed something⌠Whoâs Jiana-san?â
âI believe sheâs your favorite âGLâ author,â Mitsuru chuckled. âA much more honest name than Hiro Tayakami, donât you think so?â
âShe⌠Wait, you didnâtâŚâ
This time, Mitsuru reached under her own bed and pulled out a book with a rather vibrantly-colored cover. It was pretty thinâmaybe the length of a short novel at most. But the title was something unmistakable. âBeneath a Sea of Doubt, My Heart Blossoms For You!â It was the title that Chihiro had given her own story. She opened the book up. That was Chihiroâs dialogue. Those were events that Chihiro had described. The entire experience felt surreal to the treasurer. Her limbs locked up, and the girl felt like she was going to pass out.
âThough I had promised to let you visit my room, this was the real reason I brought you here, Fushimi. Iâm sorry about the lie of omission, but I love a good surprise,â Mitsuru admitted with a gleeful smile. âWhile we talked, Jiani-san said how she had been trying for years to get a story down for her first serialized manga, but couldnât find the right plot. I already wanted to pay for her to adapt the beginning of your writing into a real manga, but when she read your story, she said she felt inspired.â
Trembling, almost as turning the page would seal her very fate, Chihiro flipped the book to the title page and stared at the words printed below the title. They didnât seem real.

âShe wishes to collaborate for a serialized story, and for it to be the debut of using her real name instead of a pseudonym,â the upperclassman explained. âBut Jiani-san said she understands if youâre not interested in that avenue and is willing to buy the story off of you. But either way, she requested to meet such a promising writer.â
âI⌠IâŚâ Chihiroâs throat was closing off. Her vision grew blurry as she felt her joints grow even stiffer.
âIs this what an allergic reaction feels likeâŚ?â
âFushimiâŚâ Mitsuru put a hand on her shoulder again, yanking her back to the real world. Slowly, the treasurerâs breathing steadied again. âOr, perhaps thatâs not the right name to use anymore⌠I feel as though Iâve truly gotten to know you as a person over these last couple months.â
âI⌠feel the same,â Chihiro admitted. âThereâs so many things that I didnât even know you liked!â
âAnd many things you made me realize I liked,â the redhead giggled. âItâs fun to figure that out, though, isnât it?â
âY-Yeah!â Chihiro looked back at the book in her hands. âO-Oh, Senpai, this isnât-â
âNo, itâs not in circulation,â she reassured. âI had four of those printed by an independent company for private use.â
âOh, ok⌠Why four?â
âJiani-san wanted two, I needed one for you, and Iâm keeping one for myself.â Mitsuru wistfully smiled and guided Chihiro to her bed, where they both sat down. âI apologize for disturbing you with the news, though. There was no easy way to explain it.â
âN-No, no, youâre right⌠Itâs just a little embarrassing, you know? Since I just write about girls falling in love and kissing and stuffâŚâ
âYour way of writing love certainly has its charmsâŚâ Mitsuru straightened the bow on her chest. âWhat is your preference?â
âHuh?!â
âWell, if weâre going to be casual friends now, I think this is the kind of talk girls normally have together,â she explained. âSo I was wondering, since you read a lot of same-sex romance manga, is that a reflection of your preference between men and women?â
âO-Oh, no, no.â Chihiro quickly shook her head. âNo, I⌠Itâs hard to explain.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWell⌠I donât really care about that kind of thing, honestly. Man, woman, whatever, I donât care what someone is⌠I just want a person who can hold me and care for me like one of these manga protagonists,â she admitted, clutching the book to her chest as she looked down with a weary smile. âIt sounds so sad when I say it out loud, but I just want someone with unconditional love who will make me feel safe and alright⌠Someone who can believe in me when I need to do something and take care of me when Iâm at my lowest⌠And I want to be able to do the same for them too. Itâs justâŚâ
Almost as if someone flipped a switch in her, Chihiroâs whole body jolted and her eyes went wide. Mitsuru just had a radiant, understanding smile.
âI-Iâm sorry, Iâm rambling againâŚâ
âNo, please, donât apologize. Even your casual words are poetic if you just let yourself go⌠Chihiro.â
âK-Kirijo-senpai! I-â
âPlease, when weâre outside of student council, Mitsuru is fine, or if you wish, Mitsuru-san,â she said, placing a hand on her own heart. âThough, inside of meetings, professionalism is requested.â
âY-Yes! I will⌠Mitsuru-san.â
âThank youâŚâ The heiress let out a small chuckle, not laughing at Chihiro, but more at a thought that crossed her mind. âYou often credit me for bringing out your best, but I think that between us, youâve evoked change in me by far.â
âOh senp- Mitsuru-san, that canât be-â
âItâs true. Youâve opened my eyes to some rather unique pleasures in life that I wouldnât have indulged in otherwise. Manga, social cafĂŠs, picking out treats at the candy store, taking-â
âB-But you elevate me to such a higher level every time you give me words of inspiration!â Chihiro insisted, one of her hands digging into Mitsuruâs bedding. âYou inspire everyone, but if it werenât for you, I wouldnât have the courage or opportunity to do half the things Iâve done and meet half the people Iâve met! Iâd probably be some shut-in loser if Iâd never met you!â
ââŚâ
In a sudden gesture, Mitsuru grabbed Chihiro into a hug. It was clearly a move that the redhead wasnât all too familiar with, wrapping around the younger girl in such an odd way that Chihiro thought Mitsuru was getting ready to throw her. The treasurerâs face burned a bright red when she reciprocated, leaning her head down on Mitsuruâs shoulder. Gently, she touched bits of Mitsuruâs hair, trying to do it in a way so her upperclassman didnât notice.
âMitsuruâs hair⌠Itâs so soft. And it smells so nice⌠I wonder what product she usesâŚâ
âI donât think Iâve elevated you a day in my life, Chihiro. Youâve always been a hard worker, willing to do the heavy lifting despite your doubts. No, I donât lift you to my status. I simply remind you to look up and see how far you already are.â

As the rest of S.E.E.S. rested up in their rooms, Aigis waited around the kitchen, pacing the floor as the kettle slowly heated up. Two empty mugs waited next to the stove, each with a teabag inside. Metis just curiously examined the box of teabags.
âSister, I have a question.â
âYes, Metis?â
âWhy still consume food and drink? Neither of us need it to survive.â
âI think itâs calming,â Aigis explained, still lost in her thoughts. âWith us, itâs not about what our bodies need, but what makes us feel most comfortable and adequate. Or⌠Maybe thatâs a bad way to put it. We donât need most of the things that humans do, so when we-â
Aigis paused her monologue at the sound of crinkling paper and looked over to her sister. Metisâs eyes were wide as a teabagâs string and tag hung out of her mouth.
âYou were right, actually. I feel calmer already!â
âThatâsâŚâ Aigis let out a deep sigh. âWas I like this when my friends first brought me homeâŚ?â
âSpeaking of your friends⌠Can I ask some questions about them?â
âOf course.â
âIâve been observing them for a while. How they behave when alone and in a group,â Metis explained. âTogether, they joke but also argue. They cook for each other but also refuse to share their food. They may light the room in an uproar or sit in silence for minutes on end. How can they justify such contradictory behavior on a regular?â
âThey⌠donât?â Metis looked even more confused. âSister, you see how that doesnât explain anything, right?â
âThatâs just the nature of being human and living. Why donât you think they run everywhere if itâs faster than walking?â
âBecause of muscle strain and energy consumption?â
âBecause sometimes we just want to walk,â Aigis chuckled. âThatâs all there is to it.â
âInterestingâŚâ Metis suddenly shifted her demeanor, looking visibly more uncomfortable. âI⌠have one last question for you, Sister.â
âI somehow doubt that.â
âItâs-â The android stopped to laugh at her sister. âItâs, um⌠Itâs just, I wanted to know what sisters are supposed to do together. Thereâs nothing I want more than to just be a bit closer with you, so⌠What can we do to express that we are true sisters?â
âHm⌠That is a difficult question for me to answer,â the blonde robot admitted, picking up the kettle and pouring the steaming water to steep the tea. âIf it makes you feel better, we are doing an activity right now.â
âWe are?!â Metisâs eyes lit up as she looked around, as if searching for the bonding activity they were currently taking part in. âWhere?â
âItâs nothing you can see. Just talking openly is a sisterly activity,â Aigis told her, taking hold of one of Metisâs hands. âRelationships and bonds are not something you can physically see or feel, but everything in between. They are the words both spoken and unspoken. The atmosphere and tension which follow you when you enter and exit a room. The private jokes⌠The extensive hours of studying together⌠The shoulder which you find safe to cry upon⌠All of these aspects and even more are what make up my sisterhood with various members of S.E.E.S.â
âIâŚâ Metisâs voice cracked as she looked down. She looked ready to cry. âI donât understand⌠These humans arenât your sisters; I am⌠I just donât get itâŚâ
âAnd that is okay,â Aigis reassured, raising Metisâs hand and causing her to look up. âI would have said the same thing not so long ago, but Iâve learned so much in my time with these people. Family is more than who you are related to. Humans have a particular saying: âBlood is thicker than water.â I find it quite insightful.â
âBlood is thicker than waterâŚâ Metis kept whispering the words, furrowing her brow even more. âI donât mean to be ignorant, Sister, but that quote seems to be the exact opposite of your point.â
âOh, Iâm sorry, I forgot that you wouldnât know all of the words. The original quote would be âThe blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.â It tells of how whatever family you choose to pledge yourself to will be stronger than any hereditary ties. That is the lesson which I believe you should learn here.â
âAre you saying⌠you donât want to be sisters?â Metis asked, confused and crestfallen. Aigis put a hand on her back and shook her head.
âQuite the opposite. I think we can be sisters, and I wish to be, but not because of where we come from.â
âInstead⌠it would be⌠how we spend our time together and interact with each other?â
âCorrect,â the robotic blonde smiled, clapping her hands together. âYou are a much faster learner than I was after being awoken.â
âItâs only because youâre the one teaching me!â Metis insisted. âBut weâll stay together forever, Sister! I promise that Iâll show our sisterly bond with every action I take out there!â
âJust⌠donât hurt yourself,â Aigis requested. âFuuka-san may be a talented repairwoman, but she can only do so much for you.â
âDonât worry about me, Iâve got your back! Now and always!â Metis looked down at their mugs. âShould we take the bags out?â
âOh! Yes!â Aigis rushed over to the mugs and yanked out the teabags. She held them out to Metis. âIâll handle the sugar. Can you dispose of these in-â
Aigis didnât even get to finish her sentence before Metis took the bags and tossed them into her mouth. The black-haired android slowly chewed them while humming, nodding in deep appreciation as if she were a connoisseur evaluating the fine tastes.

Makoto ran through the halls of Tartarus as fast as his legs would take him, hoping itâd be enough to outrun the girl. Tonight wasnât supposed to end up like this at all. Fuuka hadnât even detected many Shadows in their path, and then all of a suddenâŚ
âYoo-hoo~ Heeey, Yuki boy!â
The boyâs grip tightened around his sword as a hand reached for his Evoker. Neither Fuuka nor Mitsuru had been able to reach him since Tartarus separated the team. Makoto was worried about them, but⌠he needed to save his own skin first. He would just have to trust that theyâd be able to hold their own against whatever they came across.
A plume of fire darted from the ceiling, straight towards Makoto. He only barely rolled out of the way to dodge, not losing a beat as he kept on his mad dash. Heâd have to stand and fight at some point, he knew that. If he could just find a teammate though⌠that could turn the odds in his favor. It didnât help that Makoto couldnât even see his foe; this girl was somehow clinging to the shadowy, murky roof.
âGrr⌠Stop running!â
An entire figure dove down, tackling Makoto over in a flash of movement. He didnât even think before he acted; the boy switched to pure instinct. With a fire of his Evoker, a spear-wielding warrior emerged from the sea of his soul, sweeping his lance towards the enemy.
CLANG!
To both the Persona and the userâs surprise, the counter came faster than either of them could anticipate. Queen Mab braced her executionerâs blade against Cu Chulainnâs spear, swatting it away and crossing her legs as she floated next to her user. The girl had long auburn hair, which had been tied back into a painfully tight ponytail. Makoto thought she looked rather underdressed for how cold Tartarus was, being garbed in a black and pink sports bra and beige cargo shorts. Inked into her shoulder was â01A122,â and both sides of her head had hairpins in an XXII shape. The girl pointed a solid metal quarterstaff at Makoto.
âYou run fastâŚâ she panted. âThat was funâŚâ
âYou were with Strega when you sealed us in that bunkerâŚâ Makoto steadied his breathing and took a step back. Now that he saw her Persona, there werenât many surprises she could pull over on him. If he just stalled, maybe someone could stumble across him. âWho are you? How didnât our navigator see you coming?â
âHehe, youâre not the only one who has cool friends,â the girl giggled. âRight nowâŚâ The girl paused and put a finger to her ear. There was no device present, so Makoto could only assume it was either theatrical or a reflex. âOoo, right now it looks like both your senpai are on a wild goose chase twenty floors below us! And theyâre fighting a real nasty Shadow!â
ââŚâ The two teenagers began circling each other, both of their Personas disappearing into a blue mist as they did so. âYou didnât answer my other question. Who are you?â
âDuh, weâre Strega, dummy! You already know that!â
âI mean you. Who are you?â
âOhhh, sorry,â she giggled. âIâve got a habit of misunderstanding what people mean. My nameâs Kotone! Oh, you donât have to introduce yourself, though. I already know your nameâs Makoto.â
âSo⌠You made a coordinated attack to split up our team and isolate me. Does that mean youâre here to kill me?â
âOr take you back. Cuz youâre the leader and all,â Kotone added, adding a frown afterwards. âBesides, killing isnât really my thing⌠I leave that business to Jin or Takaya. Iâd rather become friends with you if I had a choice.â
âIs leaving it to your friends much different?â
âSurprisingly, yes.â
âHer moral compass is all kinds of brokenâŚâ the boy thought.
âHow about you just come fight for us? I mean, just looking at it, S.E.E.S. sounds like a drag! Do you all even really care about each other? Weâre all a family here in Strega.â
âWeâre not perfect, but we make it work,â he grunted. âYou can come back with me if you want⌠Iâm sure weâll have a place for you.â
âThat bluff was as thin as a sheet of paper, but it was worth throwing out there,â he thought. âI canât really get a feel for what this girlâs whole deal isâŚâ
âWhere are your other friends, if youâre so close?â Makoto asked with as much bite in his words as he could muster. âComing after me all alone was a bold move.â
âWell, none of them can move how I do,â she grinned, kicking and stretching her foot above her head. âIâve got to be the athletic muscle of the operation! Even if Takaya is like our nuclear bomb. BesidesâŚâ Kotone gave Makoto a smile so ruthless that it struck a pang of fear into his heart. âI have more friends with me than I know what to do with.â
Makoto just barely had time to draw his Evoker before Kotoneâs Persona materialized in front of her once again. As the girlâs Ares clashed with the boyâs Siegfried, both teenagers stared at each other in wonder. In unison, only one sentence could escape each of their lips.
âYouâre like me!â
Their warrior Personas separated, and Kotoneâs eyes lit up with excitement.
âNo way! You can summon multiple Personas too?! I thought I was one of a kind!â
âI thought the same thing⌠Igor never mentioned you.â
âHm?â Kotone tilted her head. âIgor?â
âYou⌠havenât met Igor or Elizabeth? Donât you have access to the Velvet Room like me?â
âSorry, youâre kinda talking nonsense,â she giggled. âBut you have to come back home with me now! Weâll have so much fun, and I wonât be the only special one anymore! We can play games, compare Personas⌠Oh! And-â
âDonât get your hopes up,â Ares warned, looking at her user. âLook at how he holds himself⌠This boy isnât planning on coming back with us. He believes you to not be in your right mind.â
âI⌠Come on, Makoto, thatâs not true,â Kotone insisted. âWeâre both friends since weâre special, right?â
ââŚâ Makoto just eyed Ares, who stared daggers into him.
âMy Personas have never talked like thatâŚâ he thought, looking at Siegfried, who cast a neutral glance at him, silently awaiting orders. âI know what I have to do.â
Both Makoto and Siegfried charged forward, grasping their swords tightly. Before Ares could strike a blow, the blue-haired boy parried the blade, leaving a gap open for his Persona to slip through. Kotone raised her quarterstaff, and in one swift motion Siegfried knocked it away. The Germanic warrior clenched his fist around his swordâs hilt so tight that his knuckles whitened before thrusting a punch straight into Kotoneâs stomach.
The auburn-haired girl went flying backwards, and her Persona gave a little flinch before disappearing entirely. By the time Makoto caught up to his own Persona, Kotone was curled up on the ground, clutching her stomach, which radiated an agonizing, burning pain. Her eyes were obscured with tears; she only saw two vague colored blobs standing over her.
âSorry⌠Youâre the one who has to come back with me,â Makoto said. A signature apathetic frown was plastered over his face. âThe couple Personas youâve used arenât hard-hitters. Iâm guessing that you canât summon the real powerful ones like I can because you donât have the Velvet Room.â
âIâŚâ Kotone held her stomach and teared up even more. âI donât know⌠what youâre talking about⌠Ugh, so strong⌠How do you deal with them?â
âThemâŚ?â
âAll your Personas, each fighting to come outâŚâ Kotoneâs gentle crying turned into an ugly sob. âDonât tell me you donât hear them howling in your ears at night! How do you stop the voices?!â
âGod, this girl is all sorts of messed upâŚâ he thought. At his will, Siegfried disappeared into a light blue fog as Makoto kneeled down.
âThe people I know can help you.â
ââŚâ
âWe can⌠be friends, I guess.â
ââŚLots of people have promised that.â Kotone curled up into a ball. âStrega are the only ones who didnât just use me and leaveâŚâ
âTheyâre not-â
Before Makoto could finish, an arrow whistled past his ear. Yukari was dashing down the hallway, notching another arrow as Kotone leapt to her feet. Makoto only saw the mischievous little Pixie for a moment before the girl disappeared in a flash of light. Makoto was left kneeling on the ground, questioning what he just fought.
âHey, youâre welcome,â Yukari said, running up and watching Kotone soar away, hanging onto a giant bird. Yukari aimed her bow and notched an arrow, but Makoto grabbed its shaft.
âDonât.â
âWhat?! Sheâs part of that group of enemy Persona-users!â
âSheâs not a threat right now.â
ââŚâ Yukari lowered her bow. âFine, youâre the leader. If this comes back to bite us later, Iâm totally giving you shit over it, though.â
âYeah, I know,â he nodded with a small smile. âHave you found any of the others?â
âNo, but I heard Junpei faintly screaming back where I came from. Once we find him and Aigis, we should-â
âGo down about twenty floors,â he interjected. âOur senpai are messing around down there right now.â
âHuh?â
âThe girl told me.â
âAnd you trust her?â
âHm⌠I think so,â Makoto nodded as they started walking. âI think weâre friends now.â
âReally? Charismatic Professor Yuki at it again.â
âYeah, yeahâŚâAs the two friends walked away, a hidden girl gave them a lonely glance before scuttling off again. None of her friends were going to like what happened here.
If you have a pairing or scenario you wanna see, comment here or on AO3!
âFuuka-san, I detect your heartbeat beating at 74.3 bpm.â
âHm⌠seems accurate,â the blue-haired engineer nodded.
Since all the other members of S.E.E.S. all had important things to do that night, Fuuka let herself come to Aigisâs maintenance check-up with the one tank top she owned just for ease. The girl held an electrode pad against her chest as she looked at a device clasped on her finger.
âIt looks like you can feel even really subtle movements with this,â Fuuka grinned, removing the device from her chest and jotting down some notes in her pocketbook. âIâm glad all my work is finally paying offâŚâ
âYes, I have been wondering⌠what is all of this research going towards?â Aigis curiously asked. âYou have been running tests such as these for weeks now, and I cannot discern their purpose.â
âAh, donât worry about it,â Fuuka giggled, covering her mouth with the book. âYouâll see someday, but itâs supposed to be a surprise.â
âI seeâŚâ
âFor now, Iâll just finish up our maintenance for the night,â she decided, grabbing a couple wrenches and moving to the terminal screen. âDo you have anything thatâs been bothering you? Stiff joints or loose screws?â
âI do, actually,â Aigis confirmed. âCould you please run a diagnostic on my weapons lock-on feature, please?â
âOh, sure!â
With just a few taps of the terminal, Fuuka checked over the functionality of Aigisâs automatic enemy lock-on. As she expected, Aigisâs system was perfectly functional. After all, the team hadnât been to Tartarus since their maintenance session last week, so there wasnât really a reason that anything should be failing in the meantime, especially not any of the weapon functions.
âYouâre good to go!â
âThat cannot be possible,â the android declared, her voice laden with confusion. âJust before you began maintenance, my system exhibited a fatal bug.â
âCan you describe it? That might help me find out whatâs wrong.â
âThough my combat mode did not engage like it would for a Shadow, my lock-on system would not stop targeting you as a threat, Fuuka-san. I could not disengage it until you shut off its functionality for our maintenance.â
âOh⌠that is concerningâŚâ the girl mumbled, putting her tools down and working the terminal. âThat sounds like a potentially deadly error if that happened out in Tartarus.â
âI agree. I donât believe we should let this kind of error go unsolved before you finish.â
âYeah, I think so too. Mitsuru-senpai would never let you go out on the field with a bug like that in your systemâŚâ
âNever?â That single, lonesome word seemed to spark something within Aigis. Fear seeped its way into her very internals, writing around her bolts and wires. Her voice shifted into a demanding, almost aggressive tone. âFuuka-san, you must solve this problem tonight!â
âI⌠will,â she nodded, furrowing her brow. âAigis, is everything else alright?â
âThis error cannot be allowed to persist in my system! Even if you must temporarily disable my lock-on, I beg of you to solve it before our leader takes us to Tartarus again.â
âHey, I promise Iâll do my best,â she said, caressing one of Aigisâs legs. Even though all feeling to them shouldâve been cut off, the gesture still seemed to always calm the android down. Fuuka wondered if there was some kind of phantom limb situation going on there.
âThank you, Fuuka-san. I apologize for my⌠outburst. I donât know what came over me. It may be another error to-â
âI think I can explain that one,â Fuuka interrupted, going back to the terminal. âYouâre just scared that if you canât fight, you canât be useful to the team anymore, right?â
âI⌠I believe so.â
âYou know, I can sympathize with that,â she wearily sighed. âIf I suddenly couldnât do something like summon my Persona, I donât know what Iâd do with myself. Youâre not the only one who yearns for a purpose here.â
âFuuka-sanâŚâ
âOh, thatâs not to say that your worry isnât valid!â the girl quickly clarified. âBut just know⌠youâre not alone. And even if you canât fight, that doesnât mean you wouldnât be welcome here⌠But Iâll do my best to fix you.â
âI trust and believe in you, Fuuka-san.â
Something about the way Aigis said that made Fuukaâs heart flutter. Lately, she had begun to doubt that her skills as a navigator were even all that helpful to the team, but everything was different when she was alone with Aigis. She felt important. She felt necessary. As silly as it was, she wanted someone to need her. For someone to depend on her in order to function properly⌠A purpose like that made Fuuka feel like a one-in-a-million.
âAlright, letâs get this done!â Fuuka decided, popping her knuckles. âYouâll be better than new by the time Iâm done, hehe.â
âYouâre amazing, Fuuka-san.â
âI- Wha-â Fuuka was caught off guard by that one. Aigis normally praised her handiwork, but didnât often call Fuuka herself such things. âAigis, where did that come from?â
âI simply spoke freely.â
âThatâs⌠new.â
âFuuka-san, your face is beginning to redden. Are you exhibiting symptoms of heat exhaustion?â
âNo, Aigis!â she exclaimed, looking away. Sometimes, Fuuka really hated how flustered she got from just a little bit of praise. She couldnât help it, though. âJust let me go get a drink, and weâll have you working properly again in no time!â

It was 2 AM, and Fuuka was no closer to solving Aigisâs bugged targeting system. She felt like she was going to tear her hair out trying to solve whatever the problem was. A dozen cans of Mad Bull littered the floor, and Fuuka could barely feel her fingertips as they danced over the terminal keys.
âFuuka-san, I believe we should cease maintenance for today.â
âHold on⌠I think⌠I got itâŚâ Fuuka slurred, her eyes fluttering shut just before her entire body jittered and snapped her back to work. âWe have to almost be doneâŚâ
âYou have consumed three days worth of the recommended caffeine limit within the span of four hours. I believe this will have considerable negative side effects.â
âYeahâŚâ the engineer mumbled, her eyes fluttering shut again as her entire body began to slump over. âYouâre probably rightâŚâ
âFuuka-san?â
âMhmâŚ?â
âYou are drooling on my terminal.â
Fuukaâs body snapped back into a rigid position, and she wiped both her mouth and the terminal with a sweat rag.
âIâm so sorry, AigisâŚâ she yawned. âI just canât figure it out⌠Your targeting system can still discern friend from foe; itâs not automatically considering me an enemy, and your targeting logic looks fine⌠I just donât get whatâs wrong with itâŚâ
âFuuka-san, can I suggest disabling my lock-on system until we resolve this issue?â
âYeah, let me do thatâŚâ With just a few keystrokes, Fuuka placed her targeting system on a lock. âUntil I can get it back online, youâll have to be extra careful, Aigis. Your onboard weapons system wonât do any aiming for you. Youâll have to discern between friend and foe and aim every shot manually.â
âThat should not be a problem.â
âI sure hope soâŚâ
After Fuuka restored her motor functions again, Aigis rose from her bed, sitting on the edge of it as Fuuka walked over to her. After just a moment of standing around in a tired haze, the teal-haired girl collapsed into Aigisâs arms. She had completely passed out.
âFuuka-sanâŚâ The android held her as gently as she could, picking Fuula up in her arms like she weighed nothing. âYou are truly a remarkable individual to do such work on me⌠so please, rest.â
As Aigis carried Fuuka to her room, she could see the girlâs fingers continue to twitch even in her sleep, as if trying to work from beyond the waking world. For some reason, the very idea crossing her mind made Aigisâs cooling system deploy. The android set Fuuka down in her bed, but for some reason as soon as she tried to diagnose her problem, the issue disappeared entirely without a trace. Her system temperature began to cool without an issue.
âThis is not normalâŚâ Aigis whispered. âHave I been infected with some sort of malware or virusâŚ? What is this strange aching within my systemâŚ?â
âMmmâŚâ Fuuka moaned in her sleep, turning over and grabbing onto one of Aigisâs leg plates.
âI am sorry, unconscious Fuuka-san, but I am not optimal for assisting in sleep,â she said, removing the girlâs hand from her leg. âPerhaps Koro-chan will be more suited for this task.â
Aigis exited Fuukaâs room, but even doing that made something deep within Aigis hurt. Not with physical pain, but as if her Papillon Heart were constricting⌠She disliked it very much.

âYamagishi, may I have a minute?â
âHuh?â Mitsuru had caught Fuuka just before she was about to start Aigisâs post-Tartarus maintenance. âO-Oh, sure, Senpai. Whatâs wrong?â
âItâs about Aigis,â she explained. âI have some concerns that Iâd like you to address during tonightâs check-up with her.â
âSure! Was she malfunctioning out there?â
âNot exactly. She performed all of her functions, but just⌠inadequately. You see, she seemed to take much more time than usual to fire at the enemy, and when she did, she missed more shots than Iâve ever seen her do before. Perhaps something to do with her targeting system is malfunctioning? Either way, a slow and sloppy response isnât what we need on the battlefield.â
âOhâŚâ
âHm? What is it, Yamagishi?â
âActually⌠her targeting system was disabled entirely. I turned it off the other day,â she admitted.
âWhat?! And you didnât tell me?!â
âI-I⌠Aigis didnât want me to-â
âYamagishi, malfunctions like this should be reported and corrected before Aigis is deployed into combat,â Mitsuru scolded. âWhat in the world would have prompted you to disable her targeting systems?â
âShe had this problem where she kept locking onto me! I was afraid sheâd shoot one of you in the middle of Tartarus! I-I couldnât fix it, so-â
âThen we send her back to the lab,â she finished. âAnd thatâs final.â
âB-ButâŚâ
âYamagishiâŚâ Mitsuruâs expression softened, and she put a hand on her friendâs shoulder. âI know you want to help as much as you can, but remember that youâre still just a high schooler, and Aigis is a weapon more sophisticated than either of us know.â
ââŚYouâre wrong,â she whispered.
âIâm sorry?â Mitsuru furrowed her brow as if she really didnât believe what she heard.
âY-Youâre wrong!â Fuuka said again, with more passion behind her words. âAigis isnât just a weapon! She thinks and feels! She can be happy! She can be sad! She can feel the joy in being with people she cares about! She can feel lonely from being deprived of them! She⌠Aigis can feel love!â
âYamagishiâŚâ Mitsuru hardly had any words to respond with. She just stared wide-eyed at her kouhai. âYou⌠may be right. Iâm sorry.â
âR-ReallyâŚ?â
âBut that doesnât change the fact that Aigis needs this problem fixed,â the redhead added. âI will call the lab for her to be transported tomorrow afternoon.â
âO-Okay⌠Can I at least do maintenance for tonight?â
âOf course. She still needs to go to school tomorrow.â
âThanks, SenpaiâŚâ
Fuuka watched Mitsuru walk away before going into Aigisâs room. When she opened the door, though, the engineer stood face-to-face with the android.
âA-Aigis!â
âI heard everything, Fuuka-sanâŚâ Aigis grabbed Fuukaâs hand. âYour dedication to me is awe-inspiring. I truly believe that if there was anyone here who could fix me, it would be you.â
âAigisâŚâ
âBut Mitsuru-san is right; I must go back to the lab and be fixed. If the scientists can diagnose my issue, I can get back to-â
âNo!â Fuuka shouted, looking down in heated embarrassment. âI-I wonât let them!â
âFuuka-sanâŚ? I do not understand.â
âI canât stand the thought of itâŚâ Fuuka said, her whole body quivering. âA bunch of men and women standing around you, opening you up⌠J-Just thinking about it makes meâŚâ
âI still do not-â
âI-I want to be the only one who gets to do that!â she finally said, covering her face. It had become so red that Fuuka was worried that Aigis would think she was about to have a heatstroke. âYouâre so amazing and special, Aigis, a-and⌠I-I want you all to myself⌠I want to be the only one who gets to diagnose your system failures⌠The only one who opens you up to remove debris⌠The only one who gets to memorize exactly how much you like your bolts tightened⌠I⌠IâŚâ
âFuuka-sanâŚâ
âI-Iâm sorryâŚâ Fuuka quivered, wiping her eyes. âYou might not unders-â
âI believe I know how you are feeling.â
âH-HuhâŚ?â The teal-haired engineer lifted her head. âHow?â
âFor the last couple days, I have noticed a new system error. Recent memories have begun to involuntarily play in my mind at inappropriate times. And most of them, Fuuka-san, are of you.â
âM-MeâŚ?â
âYes, you. Every time you have praised me. Whenever I have observed you laughing at a joke. Each and every time you tell me something that you like about me⌠My memory will not stop recalling these events on a perpetual loop at inappropriate times. And I have found myself becoming greatly distressed when you give others your praise⌠When you grace anotherâs ears with your laugh⌠I believe this is what you call âjealousy,â but I should have no reason to feel such a thing.â
âWell, noâŚâ Fuuka sniffled. âJealousy isnât usually rational. Itâs usually just all in our heads⌠All in⌠in ourâŚâ
Fuuka froze in place, her words trailing off as she stared into space. Something in her brain had just suddenly clicked. A bunch of puzzle pieces from the last few days fell into place for her, as if she could finally see the forest from the trees.
âFuuka-san?â Aigis asked, concerned. âCan you tell me how many fingers I am holding up?â
âFour! And I think I know what your problem is!â the girl said with an excited smile.
âTruly?! Quickly, to my docking station! You must fix it!â
âWell, I donât think itâs something I can fix by opening you up, actually,â she admitted. âIt needs a different kind of setting.â
âWhat are you referring to?â
* Â Â * Â Â * Â Â * Â Â *
âFuuka-san, I still donât understand why we are here and not in my room.â Aigis reported. She and Fuuka sat in the girlâs own bedroom, both of them drinking warm cups of tea.Â
âIt just sort of struck me,â she admitted. âBut what if I wasnât able to find a programming or hardware issue because it wasnât a problem with either of those?â
âWhat else would it be?â
âI canât believe I ignored the signsâŚâ Fuuka said to herself. âI feel so silly nowâŚâ
âFuuka-san, what are you referring to?â
âHave you not noticed, Aigis? Youâve been praising me as a person lately. Youâre feeling jealousy and possessiveness over me. When weâre apart, you canât stop thinking of me, and I noticed that those temperature spikes only happened when you made direct contact with me⌠I couldnât see it because I kept trying to find the issue inside of Aigis, the machine. Now I feel like such a hypocrite for telling off Mitsuru-senpai like that,â Fuuka sheepishly said. âThis is a human problemâan emotional issue.â
âYou believe that I⌠am experiencing an emotional error?â
âI-In a manner of speaking.â
âI seeâŚâ Aigis held her chin and looked down. âHow might I get rid of this error, Fuuka-san?â
âThe thing is that thereâs no errors in your system, Aigis. Diagnostics show that your system thinks itâs performing as itâs supposed to. I donât think that emotions are bugging your systems⌠I think that your systems are trying to adapt to your emotions. Like, theyâre trying to integrate emotions into your operations, and this is some kind of growing pain as it learns.â
âThis is an interesting theory⌠But how can we be sure?â
âWell, we canât,â Fuuka admitted. âI canât read your emotional side of things. Itâs way too complicated for me to decipher. But Aigis, I think youâre just going through⌠Well, kind of like robot puberty, I guess?â
âThat explanation feels inaccurate.â
âYeah, it does,â she chuckled. âBut itâs the best one I have. None of these problems are originating in your system or code. It all traces backâŚâ Fuuka parted Aigisâs ribbon so that they both had a good view of the androidâs heart. âThere. The signals that come from your heart are whatâs causing interference with your systems. I thought it was just the protocols messing up, but now I see that your system is just struggling to integrate new conditionals and-â
âFuuka-san, I appreciate your enthusiasm to explain my problems to me,â Aigis said with an understanding smile. âBut how might I stop this from impeding my performance in the future?â
âYou have to⌠feel, Aigis. Feel, and get used to feeling. Thatâs the only way your system will learn how to deal with all these new emotions.â
âI see⌠Fuuka-san, you have been so helpful with my maintenance that I have to ask you, will you⌠Will you help me with these emotional errors?â
âAigis⌠Iâd be so happy to!â Fuuka put her tea down and wrapped her arms around Aigis in a hug. After just a moment of hesitation, the robot reciprocated.
âThat is such a relief⌠I feel rather strange,â she remarked.
âStrange? Strange how?â
âNever before have I thought this, but⌠I do not mind such a malfunction if it means I get to spend more time being worked on by you, Fuuka-san.â
âOh, Aigis, IâŚâ Fuukaâs face turned red as she looked away.
âDo not be embarrassed, Fuuka-san,â Aigis said with a genuine smile. âI do not mind being a work in progress as long as I am yours.â
