Athena retellings part 5
This book is so bad it could be considered torture
Trust me that chapter 2 is terrible
100% chance that chapter 10 will be terrible too
"Men tell this part as if it were clever. They say Zeus used cunning against cunning."
Oh, it's the dumb argument that if it's written by men no none should take it seriously
"Olympus shook. The earth heard me. The sea drew back. Heaven knew a new power had arrived."
Athena, your birth wasn't treated in such a dramatic way
"Men prefer simple gods. They want war to be Ares, red-handed and roaring. They want love to be Aphrodite, beautiful and unbearable. They want death to be Hades, hidden beneath the earth. They want the sea to be Poseidon, vast and offended.
And they want wisdom to sit quietly in a clean robe, speaking in gentle riddles while the world burns around her."
Bitch, wtf???
NO ONE expected you to just sit in a corner, speaking in a low voice!
The men you're trying to blame were the ones writing dozens of myths about you!
"Do not mistake me for Ares. Mortals do this often."
There's no mistake between you two. Athena has a much worse temper than Ares
"I was born armed, but I was not born drunk on war. My spear is not raised for noise. My shield is not lifted for vanity."
"When I enter battle, I do not ask first, 『Who is angriest?』
I ask, 『What must be protected?』
That is the question Ares forgets. What must be protected?
The walls. The children. The harvest. The law. The old women grinding grain beneath roofs that have not yet burned. The young who have not yet learned the names of the dead."
This book is really desperate to convince me that Athena is a morally good war goddess who totally doesn't enjoy the death and destruction it causes 🙄
"Men who worship only Ares become weapons without hands to guide them. They are swung by rage, by kings, by rumor, by insult, by fear."
This is so obnoxious I'm not even angry anymore
"When I stand beside a warrior, I do not pour madness into his blood."
Except that's exactly what you did to Ajax The Greater
"I do not love war. I love what wisdom can save from war. I love the city still standing when the smoke clears. I love the child who grows old because one soldier held his place. I love the treaty signed before pride could demand a massacre. I love the enemy spared because sparing him made him an ally. I love the tyrant removed because mercy to him would have been cruelty to thousands."
Do you understand why I called this book a torture? 😐
"Through immersive mythological storytelling, you will witness the fates of Medusa, Arachne, and other women who dared to challenge, rival, or mirror her brilliance."
The summary has Hera, Pallas, Cassandra and Niobe as part of this
None of these women were "punished by Athena" and only one of them is a goddess so the title makes no sense
"Her name was spoken softly among the gods—not because she was weak, but because she was subtle."
Ok then
"A new force had entered Olympus—one not ruled by appetite or emotion.
She had no softness to shed.
She was the inheritance of swallowed feminine intelligence—refined, weaponized, estranged from it's source."
This book follows the annoying narrative that Athena acts like a robot that can't emote
"As if Hera were a pillar in a temple Athena had already mapped—useful, significant, but not intimate."
What? Hera and Athena worked together in at least 3 events: Argonauts, coup against Zeus and the Trojan War
"Better than crawling from a womb like a wet mortal thing."
Again, what? Why Poseidon would make a comment like that?
"Apollo, for all his radiance, was restless. Athena's quiet was a kind of dominance he could not easily sing into submission."
I don't remember Apollo ever trying to manipulate Athena or something like that
"Ares blinked, offended. The others gods murmured again. A line had been drawn with a single sentence, and Athena had done it without raising her voice."
??? Ares wasn't raising his voice either and his comment wasn't a insult so I don't understand why Athena's bland response is being treated as something shocking
"Her name was Medusa, and when she laughed, fishermen swore the tide shifted closer to shore just to listen."
Terrible start
And in case you're wondering, her sisters and parents were removed from the narrative
"When she came of age, she was chosen to serve in temple of the Grey-Eyed Goddess.
Medusa entered that temple as a devotee.
In the temple, there were rules about posture, about silence, about thought itself. Emotions were to be mastered. Desire was to be disciplined. Devotion meant restraint."
So it's a cult in the modern sense of the word
"Filled with stunning illustrations,"
It's just a bunch of ai generated image
That's quite bland
It talks a lot about the origins of Minerva and how she was later conected with Athena
Athena retellings part 4
The design for Athena looks insane, not in a good way
"Last I heard, Zeus was out in some place called Bisbee and actually, truly in love. Hermes had his heart stolen by a cat shifter, of all things, and even Aphrodite, who has about as much disdain for love as I do, has found someone."
Excuse me, what?! Aphrodite, the goddess of love, has a DISDAIN for love???
For reasons I don't care enough to check, Euryale is a bartender and Athena is a frequent client

Chapter 12 — The Punishment of Medusa's Defilers
I don't have good expectations for this
"That is why her presence is often missed. She does not stand at the center of events announcing herself, and she does not move in ways that demand recognition."
Would be too rude to tell the writer that Athena isn't this humble, quiet goddess?
"Her response is direct and final, driven not by emotion, but by necessity."
Auge, Iodama, Ismene, Ilus and Harmonia aren't tales of necessity
"This is how Athena moves through the world. She appears when the moment demands precision. She acts when hesitation would allow failure. And once the outcome is secured, she does not remain to reinforce it endlessly. What she builds is meant to hold on it's own."
I feel like Athena would stay behind to reinforce her objectives
"Athena studied Zeus briefly, her expression controlled and unreadable, while Zeus looked at her with the understanding that whatever had emerged from him no longer required shaping or instruction."
"What stood before him had emerged complete. Athena required no guidance, no shaping, and no explanation for the purpose already driving her foward."
That's basically the same thing
No comments about the synopsis
"Her wisdom is unmatched. Even today, many recognize her strength, protection and divinity."
"In ancient Greece, it was called Athênai, and it was the home of a sisterhood who were led by Athena and who worshipped the goddess."
Are you talking about her priestesses?
Trying to make a kids' book about Nyctimene is one of the weirdest ideas
Not sure if it's possible to put Athena in a archetype
"The violent, direct birth from Zeus' head symbolizes Athena's intellectual and strategic origin, highlighting her as the goddess of reason, wisdom, and just war, in constrast to the blind fury of other war deities."
This obsession with maing Athena a morally superior war deity just because she's associated with wisdom and strategy is annoying
The Homeric Hymn to Athena made it very clear that she enjoy the horrors of war
