A conversation w/ a snared fox at the edge of the field
Hit Different - SZA | Choreography by Valeria Garcia
So according to one Taino who saw my post Princess Nokia is full of shit.
So she’s Puerto Rican but not Taino? Did no one at the pow wow get at her? No little to nothing about her except she makes Internet trendy “wavy” music and and hangs out with that Jaden smith crowd of hippy bohemian, yuppies. Anybody no more about this?
as a native american descendent, youve got alot of nerve to believe to talk about me and my culture this way-
I am Taino..i was raised with indigenous Taino traditions and culture since i was a child. Ive been participating in Native & Indigenous ceremonies since i was a child. The first time the spirits of my Taino ancestors spoke to me, was when i was a child during an Aryeto.
I am very proud to be puerto rican, and with that comes the reality that i am extremely mixed race, like ALL PUERTO RICANS. No one is 100% Taino. In fact most are 10-20%. 20-70% Afrikan. 30- 70% european.
I am extremely bothered to have my heritage discussed with such distaste and disregard, when i have made it a point to celebrate my culture equally with pride and dignity all my life.
no i am not a hipster. i was a struggling young women of color from the ghettos of new york city. i happened to do something positive with my life and make music that by the grace of god, caught on with youth sub culture and provided a career for myself.
i made an album that was inspired by all my cultural influences Taino, Yoruban, & Spanish, such as the song “YAYA” & “Corazon En Afrika”.
I actually took a DNA test recently, and i am 14% Native American.
Like most Puerto Ricans, Born in New York.
You know what i did do? i refused to sign with any labels, and chose to make a genre bending, culturally rich FREE album.
You know what i didnt do? SELL MY FUCKING SOUL
i do not associate with any celebrities, and in fact am extremely private when it comes to social circles in the music and art world.
That blog,” THIS IS NOT TAINO” is a tasteless joke, and you should never believe anything they say.
with that being said, i as a child, chose to embrace my taino heritage.. most children are made to- when there brought up by elders, and usually stop taking part in ceremonial traditions when their older. i loved being taino so much, and connected to my ancestors SO much, that i made sure it was something i involved in my life into my adult hood. so yes, now i go to native american gatherings as a grown woman, and represent my culture. That pow wow youre refering to, Drummers Along The Hudson, was a beautiful gathering. and i was embraced by all nations with extreme love and respect.
And when the all nations dance circle took place, i danced along my taino, cherokee, sioux, cree, and many other first nations family.
i dont need to prove anything.. i love being taino, and i will always be involved in the community someway or another.
have some respect for my culture. my nation was the first to be colonized and decimated in the new world, and the last to be recognized in the Native American Nations Roster. My country Puerto Rico was stripped of its nationalism, independence, culture, and Indigenous history.
First, in response to the original poster: there has been for centuries a divide between North American and Latin American Native communities. This is due to geographical, linguistic, and national divisions. Our nation, announced “dead” for Spanish political necessity and presumption for hundreds of years, had has no political communication or organization with other Indigenous nations.
That is precisely why this blog was created, and we would have appreciated if you had messaged us further or that you had better accessed the resources on this and related blogs for explanation and evidence as to these assertions.
The so-called powwow “Drummers Along The Hudson” is actually an event hosted by and trafficked by groups of frauds, notably the UCTP and Mexica folks. Powwows are often open to the public; there’s nothing Indigenous about attending them.
Given that the picture you posted, of a public ceremony in a manner in which we do not engage and in plain cotton costume, we won’t repeat ourselves. You weren’t raised with anything Taino. None of that is Indigenous.
We’ve spoken at length about Operacion Serenidad, and how the nationalist rhetoric under Luis Muñoz and at the behest of the American government was propoganda to erase Black and Native islanders, and to pacify racial tensions for unification, despite there being high admixture on the island just as anywhere else in the Caribbean.
But despite that, we don’t and have never gone by percentages or any other blood crap. No one here has ever claimed to be “100%” anything so I’m not even sure how that’s germane: we do not and have never determined ourselves or who belong to our nation by “blood” or blood quantum or DNA. Furthermore, these DNA tests that you are referring to, that you yourself have taken and now feel insecure about apparently, and that scientists engage in, do not account for patrilineal DNA (Y sex chromosome) nor for autosomal DNA (the vast, vast majority of genetic material in an individual).
It is an easily verifiable fact that these studies look at the most easily studied and preserved genetic signatures, that of matrilineal mitochondrial DNA. Thus, even if these studies bore any importance on Indigeneity, and they do not, they are not by any stretch of the imagination an accurate measure of anything except that specific subset of DNA. However, these studied in fact did turn established narratives about initial and rapid Native depopulation of the island by showing there was heavy admixture: and in fact, our nation survived and we are speaking here to you now.
It is never easy to grapple with lies that people have told you, and we aren’t surprised that you are bothered. The Caribbean has faced an unique position in the Americas of having such a low Native population as to almost have complete ignorance of the historical violence, events, and power dynamics between mestizxs/Indigenous descendants that exists throughout Latin America.
However, it is not your heritage by sole virtue of ancestry. Throughout Latin America, mestizxs and Indigenous people have distinct cultures. This holds true for the Caribbean. You can be proud and celebrate your ancestry, however what you have been engaging in sadly is not that. We’re proud of you uplifiting Black, Caribbean, and Afrodescendant folks especially those in the diaspora.
But your song “Wavy Spice - YAYA” (YouTube. 29 October 2012.) isn’t an accurate representation of our music, culture, regalia, language, or really anything. The representation you provided however did make waves. Even now people around the world and even on Wikipedia, believe assertions to things like “’Yaya’ is the Taino word for Great Spirit”. But that’s not what this word means; even white scholars do not agree with this. Our most basic stories include this name, as it is an important part of our history and our beliefs, our spiritual reality.
This tell me again, that whatever you were told or raised in is not Taino. We could continue by examining the lyrics: the beginning is an excerpt from Edwin “Maguey” Cedenos’ album of revivalist music, ‘Taino Log Drumming’ and then is quickly followed by what is supposed to be the Lord’s Prayer in the Taino language. All this clearly was inspired by the video linked here (“The Lost Taino Tribe - a documentary”. YouTube, Indio Taino Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Aug 30, 2009.), where you can here the above described within the first few seconds, before another fraud begins to speak without any knowledge of the culture either.
But this “prayer” is well-known because it was supposed to be an example of how the Taino language might have been like as conceived by a famed Puerto Rican historian and writer, Dr. Cayetano Coll y Toste, in his book ‘Prehistoria de Puerto Rico, 1493′, pg. 193.
[Translation: We will now attempt, by way of a work of imaginative linguistics, the formation of a religious Supplication [note: prayer], as we might say, an Indo-Antillean dominical oration, which, although still well away from the reality of what likely had existed, brings us to the mind of the sweet accent of that disgraced people. We utilize, of course, the words which are conserved of the extinguished Indo-Antillean language. Here follows said prayer … ]
In fact, to fill in a blank where he has no suitable term, he merely inserts the Spanish word ‘para’ “for”. However, a careful reading reveals that his scholarship, although extensive is not particularly accurate or precise; some of them appear to be straight-up made-up. Many of these words are completely inaccurate in meaning, if not at least misspelled. Actual knowledge of the language reveals quite a bit. The prayer above is created solely as an aural exercise; it has no grammatical substance whatsoever. Fraud groups regurgitate the old colonialist idea that our language was only a “dialect” of Lokono, and then variously appropriate from the language.
“In [the] Taino dialect” [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/263106981206827008]
And then followed immediately by an exchange where you and another individual were “learning the language”. But why the inclusion in a piece, as a “Taino song” via your tweet if not accurate? Or at least conforming with the material that is being taught by revivalists. Often, revivalists play a long chain of telephone where things are distorted even more than they originally were, without any real concern. This “prayer” has been passed down, and examined by frauds from “linguistic content” for decades.
We didn’t even embroider, we wove. Do these groups ever stop to examine how tacky they look? [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/263124896572399616]
You’re involved, quite clearly from the picture you posted, with one of the oldest extant revivalist groups: El Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén, which I surmise is supposed to mean something like “The Taino Assembly ‘Big Sacred Fire of Puerto Rico’, which started off as something like a dance troupe and is now apparently a “tribe”. We’ve spoken with these individuals before. They’re quite concerned with “ceremonies” and “dances” which they perform quite often in ridiculous costumes.
“Hanhan” actually just means ‘yes’; “ka tu” was a Coll Y Toste invention. Is this what they’re teaching? I’m screaming. [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/538091457245364225]
Just to pick a random selection, “matunheri” is an address meaning something equivalent to “sir” and “Bimini” is a geographical placename. So wow, it’s wild that people are taking these as names. But not surprising since you congratulated someone for having the word ‘leader’ as their name, apparently. [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/559166408173846528]
This isn’t at all how our names work. Doesn’t this seems strange to any of you? [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/251278491520204800]
That first word isn’t even an adjective? And the latter is horribly misspelled. But if you correct, this it actually just the words “sky” and mispelled Lokono for “man” next to each other. Yikes. [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/263334031700148224]
And frankly it’s very concerning what kind of activities these revivalists are getting up to with children, if they’re letting literal children get smoked out by grown ass adults. I hope this wasn’t the voices of the ancestors you were talking about. [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/579215243873677313]
This was actually the first tweet on your Twitter we saw. Concerned because this sounded culturally appropriative, and moreover fetishistic since no Indigenous nations actually refer to themselves as “Aztec”. [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/505645714060607488]
We are quite familiar with fakes flocking with other fakes. And Mexican Indigenous people have repeated stated that danzantes are not Indigenous, and the “Mexica Movement“ is a violent group of culturally appropriative mestizx frauds. [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/248604850240229377]
So, in conclusion. No, Taino is not the same as Puerto Rican, nor vice versa. A Taino person would be starkly aware of this. There is more than one culture in Puerto Rico, and claiming we’re all “Black” and “Taino” erases Afroindigenous boricuas too. [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/243459518518939648]
But uh, yeah. Magic “Taino Indian” and ancestor spirits or something… [https://twitter.com/princess_nokia/status/253138698969956352]
The only tasteless thing here that shouldn’t believed is that people are doing this to children even now.
Where can I find info on princess nokia blackfishing? I thought she was Afro latina, im not saying she isn't blackfishing I just want to find more info on it
I have no idea how long ago you sent this but:
Literally if you just look at images of her you can physically see her morphing herself over the years into looking Black.
I had to research/come to the conclusions and look for this all myself. Some keywords that might help is that she used to go by themermaidgirl and wavyspice with the word tumblr on google (those were the names she went by before she switched to princess nokia.)
On her Blackfishing:
I basically found out through google after seeing what she looked like in her infamous “so juicy so fertile” Vogue video that she Blackfishes because I noticed she obviously uses tanner (Face lighter than body with different tones). I started googling her old pictures and social media names and...yeah here we are.
She deadass darkens her skin artificially, wears fake Afro wigs, and gets lip injections to make herself look Black, and is lying about being AfroPuerto Rican, she’s been lying about being Indigenous as well.
How you go from this:
To this:
Her own ex-friends have said she’s not Black and called her out for it. Actual Taino Indigenous people have repeatedly called her out for lying about being Taino.
If you look at pictures shes posted of her family literally none of them are Black. They’re more than likely white or majority white/mestize. None of them in Puerto Rico would be considered Black. None of them. Like my mother’s family is literally all very much white Puertoricans who come from white European colonialists in PR, and that side of my family look JUST LIKE the people in these pictures. She’s not ambigious mixed Black, she’s straight up Blackfishing and pretending to be Black.
She is literally mestiza/white Latina cosplaying Afro-Indigenous Latinidad. Like straight up fucking cosplaying being mixed and cosplaying being spiritual/in Afroreligions.
Like who tf sits there for instagram smoking cigars with a golden headwrap showing the viewers a Yemaya oracle card like she’s really doing something except for people who are using ATRs and shit for social media clout liiikkeeee.......She can smoke all the cigars she wants, that’s not gonna make her AfroPuertorican or Afrotaino for shit. It’s fucking embarassing.
I swear the reason she’s always going on about being mixed Afro-Indigenous is because in Latino culture, including PR culture, there’s this incorrect idea that we’re all European/African/Indigenous, therefore any Latino can claim Afrolatinidad. Obviously that’s not true. But I’ve even heard this stupid shit in progressive/activist circles.
And with ATR/ADRs and Brujeria becoming more visible and popular in recent years, why wouldn’t she jump on it to capitalize off the craze, considering that’s what made her popular? So I deadass wouldn’t be surprised if this is why she tries saying she’s Black when clearly neither she nor either sides of her family are any sort of Black Puertorican. But she’s been called out for this shit so many times, nobody can say she’s just ignorant, at this point she’s been telling people straight up lies.
She wears Afro styled wigs and then lies about it being her real hair. And people have apparently called her out before but she was adamant that its her real hair. You can tell that its not her real hair, and that her actual texture is wavy, not curly.
Those are all wigs. All 3 of them in the images. You can literally tell they’re wigs. Esp in the middle/second pic, look at those roots. You can see the braids underneath and how the curls aren’t actually connecting to her scalp. Bc those are fucking wigs. Even in the bruja video, she was wearing a fucking wig.
Why do you think she goes from a light tan, to a much darker warm almost orange shade, to a neutral medium shade, back to a super dark but more olive/green toned shade? Because that’s not what her actual color is.
Have you noticed how in a lot of photos of her, her skin is sort of patchy with random spots, or her face is super pale without makeup compared to a much darker body, her body most times being a much darker color than her hands? Why sometimes her nails look dirty?
It’s literally because she uses artificial tanners/spray tan on her skin. She’s always a different shade because it goes between being fresh and faded or she switches up the brands/colors/products she’s using.
Like look at her fucking hand compared to her face (and check out the injections) like wow:
She gets mad fucking CCs of injections into her lips to make them look fuller than they actually are. And she’s been getting it done for ages. In recent moments she’s been doing.......alot.
She’s 100% A Blackfisher like it’s fucking crazy because I didnt know that wasnt what she naturally looked like. honest to god this had me so fucked up and I’m still so fucking mad over this. I had heard people repeatedly saying she wasn’t Black and figured it out through just searching up on google. She’s absolutely fucking wild for profitting off of the idea that she’s AfropuertoRican and acting like shes supposed to be some sort of representation for us when she’s been fucking lyinggggg. Faux-spiritual and faux-Black as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucckkk and making money off of it.
I even saw that she apparently tried to argue with a visibly Black woman who was calling her out, that the Black woman’s skin looked fake and orange and was probably a tan on twitter. Like. GIRL GET AWAY FROM THE MIRROR BECAUSE....
She’s fucking WILD.
This isn't even counting that bizarre blaxploitation voice she used for her entire Honeysuckle EP after pretending to be indigenous album Cybiko. That's when I knew this bitch was a weirdo

SAY YOU’LL BE THERE Spice Girls
“Mama, if you’re listening, I’m so terribly sorry, but I did not mean to love that beast of a man. I did not even wear that red cape, those red shoes just the armful of poppies and maybe they looked like blood or maybe they looked like healing but I found him first, and dropped them like bloodstains on the forest floor. Mama, he was howling, and oh, if you’d heard, the oh, of his grief even the moon was crying for him even the night was weeping mama, I know that we met on the edge of some awful precipice but he folded my hands into his claws made sure they didn’t draw blood I asked him about his dark and he said ‘who will love me now?’ I did, mama. I fell in love with him then, And he took me home and kissed me till my heart looked like pulp and we undressed each other from the inside out and we loved till it was brimming and mama, it was a disaster and it was devastating and it was light. I lost your poppies. I lost myself, too. And now there’s a beast and he’s crying and he’s asking ‘who will love me now?’ And mama, I didn’t mean to but I will, I will.”

Hora de movernos Banda
i cancel plans to spend time with me
ugh fine my personal blog is not cutting so I’ll post here
DO! NOT! DONATE! TO! AMAZON! CONSERVATION! NGOs! DO NOT!
they don’t act on the root of the problem, they don’t mitigate the effects of deforestation, they do have limited action and they don’t help conserve the forest land outside their very small grounds besides doing little to nothing to help the people who actually live in the amazon and conserve it on a daily basis
DONATE TO THE INDIGENOUS MOVEMENTS INSTEAD
they are organized, they can keep woodcutting companies away from their land, they are getting murdered for it, they are the only reason there is any forest left at all
THIS is a a fund for indigenous peoples of the Amazon (Brasil only)
THIS is a link to donate from abroad to the indigenous women’s march, it has already happened but you can still donate to support the cause
THIS is a link to support the free land camp, and you can email them at [email protected] if you really want to find ways to support them, donations will go to APIB (Brazilian Articulation of Indigenous Peoples) and you can keep up with their news here
(APIB is coordinated by, among others, Sonia Guajajara! so if you know her you know this means shit will get done)
SIGNAL BOOST
Mi lengua, mi cobija
I feel myself being folded into the warmest and most welcoming blanket when I hear the 'hola' followed by my name with the letters pronounced how they're supposed to.
Terms of endearment are much sweeter when they're the ones you've heard all your life, mija, amor, chiquita, amiga, I know I'm welcome here.
We make home out of each other cuando se conoce el dolor de dejar un pais, todo lo que sabes. Community, affirmation, that's how you make it through.
Yes, I live in the 'bad' area, but I am happy because I am with my own. What good is a 'good' area if you're going to be isolated? Who are you then?
Many forget themselves and where they came from, or maybe they don't know where they came from because their parents have chosen to forget, have exchanged their culture for the dollar.
Our own culture becomes commodified, as some of us just get used to the jokes and stereotypes and we eat up the brownie points for being the token, frida-fying our homes because communism and art are trendy now, just hold the pesos and the poverty.
Palatable, watered down, cracked pepper for seasoning, saying spanish words in english, palatable. Stay out of the sun, find a man with blue eyes so your kids will be lighter, palatable, teach them english only so their spanish accent won't betray them. Palatable. What else does the home country have to offer anyway?
Saying my name the way it's supposed to be said has been so affirming, and I don't care if it's not palatable. The confused faces I get, eyes and mouth open in anticipation for me to say an easier, anglicized version of my name... those moments used to make me embarrassed but I relish them now. And find so much satisfaction whenever I'm met with a latinx person saying it back to me, and we can share our blanket.
anywhere but here;
anyone but me

“Fuck #Ice shoutout to my Mexicans , pass this shit”

Simply…
