the world is a puzzle, so complex and multifaceted that you long to run your hands through the tapestry of its wonders and stay there forever, lost in the threads and colors and stories. you wish to stay there forever and you tell yourself it's to know the world but maybe it's not.

maybe it's a fear that you're not enough, that you're so fragile and helpless in a world that moves too fast, to sharply, too many bright, painful colors that you stay locked inside your mind and thoughts, where you decide the tempo of your world, where you can grow and be as competent, as capable as you want, where the world is as wide as you can imagine it and never out of control unless you want it to be.

                            had he checked the forecast earlier this afternoon? yes. were the warnings of an evening thunderstorm consistent throughout the day? also yes. had any of this information discouraged his plans to go junkyard diving after dusk? absolutely not!

all the more reason to go, on the contrary. the professor, ernie, phil, and the others could probably use the tarp he’d found earlier that week--some fresh blankets, too. …there was juuuust the matter of the buddy system. with all the ruckus that’d been going on as of late, he’d likely be chided for dipping out of the lair alone.

he crouched and plucked the tiny turtle cam prototype off the ground, giving one of the spindly legs a poke. 

warm touch

     she looks up, screwdriver still in hand as she tilts her head. she hadn’t expected him to be back so soon, truthfully. usually when he got up for something (  even just a drink  ), one of the brothers tended to drag him away and distract him. not that she’s necessarily done anything wrong…this time. she holds up the small piece in her hand, screwdriver waving a little in the air.

     ‘  ‘m just helpin’ with the board is all.  ’

     the pieces he talks about have been moved, yes, but are still in the same piles they were in, just to the left side of the table. there were a few things, missing, of course. but those things were currently put together in her hand. she tightens another screw before looking up at him.

     ‘  ya looked like ya were havin’ trouble gettin’ the engine properly put together. so i wanted t’ help.  ’

                            it takes a second or two to recognize the exact piece she’s holding. there’s also a bit of relief when he notices that the piles of loose pieces and parts–while moved–have not been scattered. 

don huffs, his expression easing into a smile toward the end of the breath.

he walks the rest of the way to the workbench and sets his drink to the side, picking up the larger section of the engine that’d sat beside her. it was beginning to look unrecognizable in the sense that he’d been staring at it for too long. not sure through what or where mikey had last ridden it, but the inner workings were choked up on something.

                            there are dozens of things that should have been running through his head in this moment–from questions to concerns to seeking some sort of escape route in case things got hairy. but he can’t bring himself to focus on any of them. all he can think is: shell, if only mikey were here. he’s going to lose his mind when he hears about this.
