It's not often that Artemis is summoned personally by Batman. She stares at her Justice League-issued smartphone with confusion, and she leaves her Spanish homework abandoned as she types, 'Acknowledged.' She hastily texts out an explanation to her poor mom, who had only gone out for the night under the premise that Artemis would remain at home. Changed into her uniform, she slips out of her second story window without a second thought.
Under the cover of night, Artemis easily slips the few minutes it takes to get to the alley behind the abandoned warehouse and the old fire station. She ducks low rails and isolated brick until she reaches the broken phone booth. The blonde glances around with a quirked brow, looking up at the various high points where the Bat could be waiting.
❝ Batman? ❞ she calls. Her voice remains low, but there is no shadow or looming pressure to indicate his presence. Had he meant somewhere else?
Just as she is about to pull the phone from one of her utility belt pockets, the slight whisper of movement against the walls make her ears perk. A smell she doesn't recognise, and Artemis immediately reaches for an explosive arrow and forces her bow at the ready. Her bowstring is pulled taut.
❝ Show yourself, ❞ she says, rasping harshly. Her voice echoes off the walls this time, and her eyes dart around. After a few beats, Artemis finally spots the source of the movement, and she blinks in surprise. ❝ Who are you? ❞
That certainly wasn't Batman.
