She wanted to be of more help, but how could she? After failing to even identify herself among dozens upon dozens of missing childrenâs postersâ how would she recognise another? She was certain to fail, though that didnât drive away from, at least, trying. â Why take someone at all? â The teen began, gaze wavering. â Thereâs really no⌠good reason for anything people like that do, is there? â Bitterness held the words captive and she made a conscious attempt to conceal it. â Okay, so⌠besides, her, Rowanâ â The name felt odd to speak aloud: familiarity with the way lips would form and familiarity with the identity sounded once they had. Maybe sheâd heard Dalton speak of her, after all. She wasnât as attentive as sheâd like to claim, after all. â  Who else has been taken in Sheffield? âCause⌠a lot of them seem to connect to him, and it should be LAUGHABLE, and it is, butâ itâs plausible, isnât it? If twoâs a coincidence, and threeâs a pattern⌠It might just be crazy enough to be true. â The teen paused, allowing cobalt tints to reunite with Lilaâs.  â But Iâll look wherever you want me to. â
she notes a slight change in the otherâs expression, but stays quiet, assuming sheâll tell her if she wants to. â iâve never understood. â just ... why not be happy with what you have ?? and if you canât have your own child â why not just adopt ?? i just donât get it. â a pause, and she bites her lip, watching the younger speak. â rowan. â she reaffirms, head nodding slightly. â besides my sister, a bunch of kids went missing in the fifties. besides that, though, itâs been quiet â aside from tommy and her, of course. â she hates the myth of the bunnyman ; it was one sheâd used to scare rowan into coming home before dark, a joke to her and the kids her age, for the most part â a tall tale told by the adults to freak out their kids and create obedience. â we can start with the bunnyman â even if it leads us nowhere, itâs at least a beginning. maybe weâll find other missing kids along the way. â fingers tap restlessly on her thigh.

She fails to connect the dots, her initial suspicion directed towards the urban legends of Sheffield. â Iâm so sorry. â It feels odd, expression sympathy towards someone on the other end of her own trauma. Even if itâs not her own, specifically. But she understands it, suddenly, the withdrawn nature of Marion Blakeâ the reason for the family being torn apart. Though as sought for pieces of the puzzle connect with one another, so does one unwanted. Kevin mightâve played the part of a victim, but she was once the culprit: the reason children disappeared as he herself once had, the reason families like Warrenâs fall apart. And guilt was quick to set in. â  She might not be. Tons of kids, they⌠they come back. â The words are false reassurance, those entering the Oswalt premises never holding the fate. â Do they think itâs the same person who⌠who took Tommy? â Â
she shrugs, hair falling from behind ears into her face. â at this point i just accept that it happened, and my goal is trying to find her. â she picks at her jacket, suddenly lost in thought of what could have been. a happy family â her relationship with her father intact. her parentsâ marriage complete. rowan, happy at home with a loving family, not â gone. â i keep hoping she will. iâll â iâll catch glimpses of girls who look like how i imagine her to look now, and iâll have to do a double take to see if itâs actually her. â she thinks for a moment, mind wandering back to conversations with police sheâd overheard, and then to recent conversations, and the search parties that had been dispatched. â i donât know. â she bit her lip, genuinely unsure. â itâs possible, but i think itâs unlikely. after all, why come back here when allâs been quite for fourteen years ?? unless that was the goal. â she sighed.

eyes narrow with the beginnings of a sly teasing grin. as IF she hadnât suspected from the START. there is no PITY here. lila hasnât lost anything, thereâs no reason to enable her to feel sorry for herself.  â  you could have led with that. i mean the flowershop comment is still a deal-breaker for ME anyway, but what did you like about him? eyes? hair? obviously not his BRAIN, i can see where that went.  â
she ducks her head, embarrassed. â why would i lead with that ?? itâs not like it mattered that much to the story. i thought he was cute, was all. not that big of a deal. â she shrugged, blue eyes rolling. her motherâs comment leads to a slight curl of the lips, and suddenly lilaâs laughing, a genuine laugh. â now that i think about it ; i have no idea. heâs not even that pretty â i think i just liked the attention he gave me. â she said, though she was embarrassed to admit it. Â

Thin brows were brought closer together, lips pursed as she took in the otherâs words. LOOKING FOR SOMEONE. Lila wasnât the only one, even if her & Kevinâs search differed greatly from one another. At least, thatâs what the younger assumed. â Not weird at all, â She assured, more so to herself than the brunette. â Who are you looking for? âÂ
â i â i had another sister. youâve met hazel, iâm sure, and my brother markus, right ?? well, we had a younger sister. she â she went missing about fourteen years ago. â she feels odd, having this conversation â she doesnât really talk about rowan, since she partially blames herself. if only sheâd been a better sister. â and everyone .... they all say sheâs dead, but i donât believe it. canât believe it. so, iâm looking for her. for clues, even. closure, i guess. â she shrugs, visibly uncomfortable â by no fault of kevinâs, of course.
mother !
â itâs still an option, your words are not that bad, but it wouldnât hurt to be open. hey, maybe one day youâll have the opposite problem, too many things youâre decent at and not knowing which skill to hone and polish.  â she is careful with her compliments â she strays from superlatives, keeps it subtle, believes in telling her children the TRUTH. most of the time at least, where theyâre concerned. the rules are different when it comes to what she tells them about herself. the last time they lived in sheffield theyâd never seen her cry ( oh but she had, behind closed doors, in closets, once on akivaâs shoulder )  â  you werenât CRUSHING on him or anything⌠were you?  â
â thatâd be nice â having too many options, i mean. â she sighs, biting her lip. sure, sheâd love to be showered in compliments right now; but she knows her mother, knows marion wonât do that. itâs not her thing. she knows sheâs lucky, however â lucky to have a mother so loving, understanding, and so forgiving. her motherâs her best friend, thereâs no doubt about it. she blushes slightly at her motherâs question, quickly dropping her head and using her hair as a curtain. â no, of course n â maybe a small one. â
kevin !
Kevin was used to being the one in need of helpâ helpless & lost; incapable of aiding anyone, even herself. The ability to be of assistance brought warmth to her chest, shielding her from the cool autumn air. â Yeah, â The younger begins, shifting in her current position. â Of course, I wouldnâtâ offer, unless I really wanted to. And I do. Whatâre friends for, right? â The last statement is seen as risky, at best. Though she hopes, prays even, that she hasnât overstepped any unforeseen boundaries.Â
â wicked. â the corners of lilaâs lips turn up â thereâs a warmth building in her, a sense of companionship that sheâs only felt with markus and hazel over the past years. she doesnât know how to broach the subject, however; she doesnât know what kevin knows of rowanâs disappearance, of the blakesâ sad history in this town. â this is exactly what friends are for. â a grin, and she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. â this may seem, i donât know, weird â but iâm looking for someone. â  Â
kevin !
Theyâre caught up in vague comments & avoidance of situations experienced by both. To what extent, unknown to the girls themselves. â Youâd be surprised. â Words are spoken with a huff, eyebrow quirked in the process.  â  Sometimes, maybe, you just need another perspective. I could help, if you want. â The offer doesnât derive from nosiness, rather a desire to be of helpâ to garner trust & friendship.
lila stares at the girl across from her, hair and eyes oddly mimicking her own, and feels an overwhelming sadness come over her. â iâm so sorry. â her voice is soft â and she pauses a moment at the otherâs words, thoughtful. â actually, iâd appreciate your help. if you want to, that is. â she tucks some hair behind her ear and settles her chin on her hand.
âBut thatâs just the trouble with me.â

â  honey â you have free will. thatâs a powerful thing. and you have time. feel free enough to try everything. if creativity is what you KNOW you have, try it all, poetry, journalism, art, music, academia, copywriting, advertising, even if itâs science ⌠travel â find yourself. take your time. itâs okay. the world is not going to run away from you for taking time to figure yourself out. â lilaâs following concession is met with a sideways grin, fingers reaching to trace her dark hair, IDENTICAL to her own raven tresses.  â his life probably lacks colour and variety, if thats all he thinks women are for.  â
she looks at her mother thoughtfully â staring at a face that hers is practically a mirror of. â i guess youâre right. i should start broadening my horizons â writing might not be for me, but thereâs certainly something out there that is. â she runs a hand through her dark hair absentmindedly, her mother tracing her dark hair with her hand. â youâre probably right. he seems like a pretty boring guy, if i do say so myself. â
kevin !
Eyes narrow as Lila speaks, the teenager being all too familiar with the situation the other found herself in. â Well, â what makes you think theyâre lies? Is it a gut feeling, orâŚÂ âCause Iâve learned that you should REALLY trust those. â Advice doesnât mean much from Kevin Oswalt; after all, she wasnât exactly the poster-child for a successful life lead. And no matter how much she loved her friends & those she surrounded herself with, she was never going to be. â Youâd be the first. â Â
â i hope youâve never had to experience a lie like those. â she says quietly, biting her lip. â i â i really hope theyâre lies. thatâs what makes me think that they are. because iâm holding out hope that thereâs an alternate truth, that â that it isnât true, you know ?? â she balls her fists as she speaks, catching herself as she almost slips up about rowan. â and yeah, gut feelings too. â she nods at the younger. â well, iâll make sure that iâm not the last. â
mother !
â  listen to me. he doesnât know you. or your worth.  â  a FLOWERSHOP. not that marion has anything against flowershops or florists, perfectly lovely people, but itâs the principle of the matter.  â  and we, in this family donât let chauvinist pigs define us. right? youâre a wordsmith. slice him up gently piece by piece and arrange them with his innards in a pretty vase. metaphorically. in fiction. in poetry. in whatever word form you want. and when the people admire it? send him a thank-you note.  â peter kimball. at the next parents week, youâre a dead man.
she sighs, pushing dark hair away from her face. â i mean, maybe heâs right. itâs not like i even know what i want to do !! â her face crumples in frustration, and she stakes her head. sheâs been studying english in college for four years and still doesnât know what she wants to be â an author ?? a teacher ?? a journalist ?? hell if lila knows. â moooooom. â she rolls her eyes in exasperation, but then her expression falls to seriousness. â youâre right, though. iâll SHOW him !! â fuck you, peter.
kevin !
The statement brought on unwanted memories; a bitter reminder of her situation, one that appeared to never quite change. She still had her friends, but a family? Kevin would only be given one sheâd chosen for herself, but perhaps, just maybe, that was the better alternative. â Has anyone ever lied to you? Big lies, I mean⌠Not â Oh, you look great in that â orâ â Yeah, Iâll totally⌠call you â - - -  â She trails off.  â I donât know about that. Not a lot of people listen to what I have to say. Or think, I guess. â Â
lilaâs expression is thoughtful for a moment while she considers kevinâs question. â well, i guess it depends on what you consider a big lie. because iâve had some, but i donât know if theyâre big lies, you know ?? fuck, i donât even know if theyâre lies at all. â sheâs thinking of kennedy, of course â or, rather, what the police told her had happened to kennedy. â iâll listen. i want to know what you have to say, your opinions, what youâre thinking. â
mother !
sometimes she feels like lila just plays her for compliments â itâs hard to tell. the question had been at the tip of her tongue â to avoid the clichĂŠ statements, UNTIL that last part. â  what? did he really say that? who is this guy again, name, details. have i seen him?  â
most of the time, lila wasnât looking for compliments â sure, they felt great, but they werenât hugely necessary. plus, it doesnât always mean much coming from your mother, since according to most people mothers are supposed to pay compliments. and in this case â it was a serious conversation, as sheâd been deeply hurt by her classmateâs statement. â maybe â i donât think heâs grown up here, though. didnât recognize him the first day of class. his nameâs peter kimball â heâs a bit of a jerk, in my opinion. â

â an awful lot of people come up to buy concessions, miss. iâm sorry i canât be of more help. â â do you want a free slurpee ? âÂ
â hazel blake; if you know her, that is. otherwise that nameâs not going to help. â have you got blue raspberry ?? â
kevin !
Kevin wasnât the most philosophical person around, but she wasnât about to shy away from the conversation. Or the opportunity to get to know the older further. So, she shrugs and brows drew together in thought. â  Maybe we should just start saying what we think. â The teen offers in response, arms crossing against a slender frame. â Weâd be much better off without lies, anyway, right? â Â
Lila nods, smiling at the younger with an almost sisterly warmth. â I agree. Thereâs no need to lie to save peopleâs feelings, because honestly â people are more hurt when they find out theyâve been lied to. â She sighs, pressing her chin into her hand as she thinks. â And maybe what youâre thinking will help someone out anyways. â
