Eventually, you and Harry were drawn into the conversation with the rest of the wedding party—each recounting memories of their time with either the bride or groom or in combination. The memories were shared over various appetizers and a mixture of cocktails, whiskeys, and beers as everyone seemed to have a natural vibe with one another and a flow of conversation that carried throughout the entire dinner. "I think we're planning on going to a bar down the street if any of you are interested", one of the bridesmaids-who was sitting in the middle of those from the wedding party who were more situated toward the left at the table, the others more situated to the right-relayed to the 6 people on the right side which included you and Harry and two other pairings. As if on cue, Harry let out a yawn, covering his mouth with his large palm as he fought the urge to laugh and yawn simultaneously. "Think that's an answer for me. I'll probably head out after this." It was obvious that Harry speaking to the bridesmaid had turned her into a schoolgirl with a crush as her cheeks dared to tinge rouge as she let out a small nod and smile. You felt something. An emotion that was off-putting to you. It felt almost possessive or like a sense of melancholy; maybe even both of them intermingled together like a vine tracing up the stone of a cottage-like home in the countryside. "You going with them?" You hadn't realized Harry was looking at you until his voice was present in your ear.
Your eyes set in his direction as you contemplated. Did you really want to spend more time in a socially heavy environment with an even larger amount of sensory stimuli than a dive bar brought? "Nah, I think I'm all people'd out."
Harry's smile was closed, yet warm as he nodded, his eyes moving from yours to his elbows relaxed on the table in front of him. "Heading to the hotel then?" Your eyes went a beat wider than usual. The implications in his words definitely fell on your faint ears, which he caught onto right away and eagerly batted away. "Just 'cause I was going to offer to walk you there since it's late…and-and I'm sure walking at night by yourself isn't the most comforting feeling in the world, you being a woman all by her lonesome-" The nervous and rushed words blurted from Harry's plush pout. The shape of your eyes must've reshaped into normalcy as Harry's previously moving fast lips came to a slow talking pace with a small smile that showcased how he realized the vomiting of words he's just displayed in front of you. "Are you staying at the hotel with the rest of us?" Harry nodded as he took the final small sip from his glass of…an alcoholic beverage that you'd already forgotten what it was exactly. Blame it on the gin and tonics. "'Course! Why wouldn't I be?" "I don't know because you're…you", you said with a small, but amused grin, which Harry found he liked quite a lot on you. "I am indeed me. Have been for the last 32 years, to my knowledge." You shook your head, but kept a warm smile glued to your lips. Then, Harry spoke again. This time, less sarcasm came from his mouth, which was rouged due to the blood rushing from the alcohol he'd been nursing on and off. "Can I walk you back then? Since we're going to the same place and all." A rush of warmth settled on the inside of your head as it flourished throughout your face, neck, and chest. You hated that you were probably feeling exactly what that bridesmaid from earlier had felt due to Harry's simple draw of attention and directness of communication with her. "Sure", you nodded; Harry produced a single nod immediately following. Since the dinner and drinks were provided courtesy of the bride and groom, it was an easy departure for you, Harry, and the rest of the wedding party. However, the bitter cold of that night was something unavoidable as you clung to your jacket as tightly as you could. Harry let out a very soft, mostly unnoticeable chuckle as he peered at you from the corner of his eye. "Cold?" Instinctively, his hand left the warm confines of his coat pocket in preparation to peel the fabric off of himself and lend it to you in your time of need. "I'll survive-only another block or so", you said, huddling your body parts inwards to conserve as much heat as you would possibly be able to do through the thin leather jacket that wasn't serving as much of a barrier. Harry couldn't help but smirk at your hyper-independence, though you were clearly uncomfortable by the looks of it. "Really, it's no trouble", he said soft with a shake of his head as he snaked the wool coat from his arms and draped it over your shoulders. "Your shivering is sort of giving you away." Instantly, the light scent of his cologne overtook your sense of smell as the warmth from his previous body heat served as a brilliant portable heater of sorts as you hugged his coat even more closely around your body. "It's freezing! What about you? Are you not cold?" Harry shrugged, "I'll survive. Only another block or so, like you said." You playfully rolled your eyes and paired them perfectly with an amused, grateful closed-lip smile.
The rest of the walk to the hotel was a comfortable one filled with the typical small talk and occasional silence as you and Harry both took in the ambiance of the city at night, amongst the various sounds of a horn honking or a rather chatty and slurring group of people walking by.
Once the warm, glowing lights of the hotel came into view, you could already feel the warmth that you knew the hotel lobby would bring in just a short matter of time. "God-I can't wait to be warm again", you voice with teeth just barely chattering as you finished off your sentence. Harry thought it was rather cute. "How are you still cold even with my jacket?" "I don't know, okay! I'm not made for this weather", you spoke defensively, though your tone was full of a giggle that you couldn't quite shake. The heat in the hotel was a pleasant change from the cold night air, and you could feel your body start to warm up almost immediately after setting foot inside. Harry was hot on your heels as you made your way over to the elevator doors. "Thank you so much", you said as you unwrapped yourself from the warm confines of Harry's coat and outstretched your arm in his direction to bring back his loaned item.
His fingers gently, just barely, grazed along your hand as he took his jacket in his palm. Then, the elevator dinged. "What's your plan for tomorrow?", You ask, simply trying to clear the silent air of the elevator.
"Plan?" "Yeah-", you nodded once, "Like..do you have plans other than helping with wedding things?" This made Harry smile-no, made him beam, because the thought of you wanting a look into his day tomorrow had to mean that you were wanting to see him at some point tomorrow-right? "Well in the morning I go for a run-"
"You run?" Harry's eyes pinched slightly as he looked at you standing directly across from him in the square shaped elevator. "I do..do you?" You nod, "I do yeah..every night though. I can't be bothered to pretend I want to wake up early and immediately do cardio" This made Harry chuckle deep in his chest. He opened his mouth to speak, but was rudely interrupted by the dinging of the elevator as it reached the 14th floor. Silently, you both walked down the hallway with Harry's feet mere inches behind you. "This is me", You voiced, but with a decent amount of reluctance to your tone because-to put it simply-you didn't want this time with Harry to stop. "Looks like we're neighbors", he smirked, nodding to the next door to the left of yours. " "Ironic..almost feels planned", you smiled playfully as your back rested against the wood door. "You caught me-I paid off the bride and groom so they'd get me a room next to the prettiest bridesmaid." There's that charm. The one paired with a smirk that you knew had to be famous by how much it was affecting the feelings in your belly. "Ah-I see, I see. Is this how you usually pull women?" "What-bribe a bride and groom?" You chuckled, shaking your head. "No-I mean this-", you fanned your hand back and forth between the both of your bodies. "-this whole charming act you have going on." "Oh, so you think this is an act?", Harry's lips dropped into a gasp, one that was overly dramatic. "Oh c'mon-don't act like you aren't aware of the effect you have on people and use this to your advantage." "And what effect would that be?", Harry crossed his arms over his chest as he narrowed his eyes whilst chewing on the inside skin of his cheek. Instantly, you shyed away. Your tongue poked through the side of your cheek as your eyes good-naturedly rolled. Harry was having way too much fun to stop now. "No, no. Please enlighten me. I'd love to know what this effect you speak of is." "Is the screaming girls in crowds not telling enough for you?" "Nope-I'm asking you. I want to hear it from you, nobody else", he said, eyes boring into yours in a way that made you feel like you and him were the only humans to exist. "You're just-I don't know. Charming, obviously, but personnable as well, all wrapped into one. It's refreshing." Harry nodded once, his eyes moving away from your eyes as if he were flattered-flattered by a mere mortal such as yourself. "How can I be both personnable and putting on an act then-tell me that" he challenged, making you nibble on your bottom lip which sent nothing but thoughts of sin to his testosterone filled brain. "Fair point." "Really-giving up that easily?", Harry tsked, making you let out a chuckle as you rested the back of your head against the door; your eyes closing briefly serving as a reminder of just how exhausted you genuinely were, despite not wanting this interaction to end. "Not giving up, more like caving in to the sleepiness." Harry nodded as his arms uncrossed and laid limp against his sides for a beat longer than usual as he thought of the best way he could possibly end this conversation with a girl that was proving to be worthy of the death of him. "So…i'm assuming I can't entice you to wake up early and join me on my run?" He knew he said the right thing the moment you started picking at the cuticles on your thumb and the way your eyes diverted whilst your cheeks puffed up in a smile; something he could only assume was a nervous habit. "Depends-what do I get out of it?"
Harry dramatically raised both of his arms in the air, showcasing his wing span. "Fresh air and my company of course." "Hmm..you'll have to do better than that i'm afraid. I reaaalllyyy don't like mornings." This made him let out a single chuckle as he crossed his arms infront of himself again. "Fine-name your price." "Coffee." "Coffee?", Harry reiterated with a raised brow, making you nod simply. "You have to buy me coffee afterwards." Harry's cheeks turned maroon, something he tried to hide by pretending to brush away something on his lower lip. "I think I can I can do that." "Looks like you have yourself a deal then" And your agreement was sealed with a shake of the hand. * * * * *
Right at 6 AM, Harry was knocking on your door. A very firm knock to be exact. One too confident and caffeinated for this hour.
You were nearly dressed, toothbrush mid tucked away in the corner of your mouth, when you opened the door, clad in a light running jacket and a pair of biker shorts. "You woke up like five minutes ago didn't you?". Harry smirked as he looked at the tooth paste that clung to your chin and the shoes on your feet that had laces still unraveled. You shot him daggers, making a chuckle rumble in his chest as he did a quick, respectful one-over of your running attire, or rather, the way it looked on you. "Hoka's-nice choice", Harry praised as he tapped his shoe against the toe of the running shoes you paid way too much money for, yet knew were a running necessity. Harry's back lounged against the doorframe of the bathroom as he watched you through the reflection in the mirror. You both made eye contact just as you were pulling your hair back so you could spit the excess toothpaste into the sink. "Thanks", you said, wiping the corner of your mouth as you grabbed a hair tie and tied a quick ponytail. You turned towards Harry who was looking at you as if you were an animal at the zoo; observing curiously and making his own mental notes of the essentials you kept on the hotel bathroom counter, the color of your toothbrush-the mundane that he found himself craving to know about you. "How much do you usually run?" "Depends, but I usually try to hit a 5k distance." You nodded approvingly with pursed lips as you bent over and tied your shoes. "Same here." "Seems like we are compatible." Just as Harry ended his remark with a confident smile, you popped upwards to stand at your full height, your hair flowing with the natural inertia of the movement. "Guess so", you spoke as you tucked your hotel room key into the incognito pocket on the side of the leg of your leggings. "Ready?" Your voice came out much weaker, as if your lung capacity was suddenly cut in half and the breath wasn't able to power the full volume of your words.
"Yep", Harry popped casually. A smirk on his face that didn't go unnoticed on your end as you nibbled on the inside of your cheek.
