Still
The 64 pack of crayons was not enough for my art projects; each one was broken
when my mother pressed down too hard on paper. The noise was similar to the
snapping of uncooked spaghetti, before she dropped it into boiling water to soften.
Still, we colored pictures. Still, we ate at the table.
summer // 15
You were scared to move at the top of the lighthouse, werenât you? But you did it anyway. My knees were shaking too. And I would ride the flying elephants in circles for hours on end just to see that smile on your face. I would sweat until the world began to spin if it meant I could hold your hand through every adventure. Somewhere between the gardens, the bridges, the sculptures, the ocean; there we were. And each time you laughed and looked back at me, I swear it was like I could hear for the first time. Every restaurant booth we have touched, every hammock we have shared, each splotch of color on the pier, a stamp. Ink still fresh and dripping down my heart sleeve.
The summer comes and goes. The departure is sharp; the sound like stepping from the loudest room in the building to an empty one. The silence is there and itâs haunting. Donât worry, I will save you from your nightmares still. When you wake in the dark, gasping like the blackness has its hands wrapped around your throat, I will be there. Squeeze my fingers until they break dear, my bones are yours to keep. Someday they will rest in the dirt, right next to yours, and the people we have known will marvel at the life we made while the sky was golden.
A Novel, Someday
They say a person is most honest in their sleep. Itâs enough.
She says, âI canât be.â She says, âWhy?â She says, âHow, how, how?â
In the car, her silhouette- darker and brighter as the street light
shines on the rings around her pupils, growing. Her shadow is enough.
The screen door to a home I never knew. We never needed a welcome
mat, never needed to slide the latch. The breeze itself was enough.
Mountain, after mountain, after mountain.
I am always climbing and what have I got to show for it? Pretty pictures?
Dirty soles? You are enough, you beautiful thing. I want to lay you down.
I want you to hear me. I want to forget about punctuation and capitalization and
write you down the way you deserve to be written and listen to Bon Iver sing about
his mother and think to myself: how could I ever let you out of my sight?
Backwards From Ten
One; You twitch in your sleep, but twitching is an ugly motion, so I like to imagine the movement as your blood dancing.
Two; Everyone knows I hate it when someone gets the words wrong. But when the lyrics spin âround your tongue til their dizzy, itâs the only way I know you, too, have flaws.
Three; I tried to write novels like you wanted, but it was always the same scene: two people â in a car, under an orange streetlight.
Iâm sorry.

Rose Cake
If I dug a shovel into the earth, unburied my past, would you lick my wounds?
Preheat the oven make me a rose cake; there is much to be celebrated when I choose to forget.
Sorry
There is not much love in the way of forgiveness- only guilt and a false sense of responsibility for the feelings of others.
Religion
The way the blanket moves when she sleeps, barely rising, barely falling, is just enough for you to know she is breathing and you whisper âGod,â like you are certain you must have picked the last four leaf clover in your past life. âGod.â And you donât believe in the word, but you believe in this beautiful body lying next to you. You crave her something serious, the way the taste buds on the back roads of your tongue need sweet after salty and salty after sweet.
She sweats above you, below you and you think it is the most incredible thing youâve ever felt. You know it isnât sweat, but rather the condensation of a body thatâs been raining on the inside for so long. You touch. Itâs humid and sheâs shedding her worn skin, but thatâs ok because sometimes, you do too. And all of this sweat and skin and condensation, wonât something stunning come of it? Wonât you eat the bread and drink the wine?
When her tongue moves behind her teeth, you become the tallest tree in a dark field of a lightning storm. Paralyzed, baptized, whatever it is you feel it in your knees. In your gut, on your skin, you hear the buzzing in your ears and you donât have to ignore it anymore. Go ahead, you are allowed.
So your lips guide the way like a drunken captain on rough seas and she is tangled in you, with you. You think for a moment that if you ever got on your knees to pray again, it would be a plea to watch her move for the rest of eternity, with no interruptions, amen. Her flaws are not flaws, they are small bits that make up a thing so sacred, you hope no one else ever gets to look at it the way you have. Greed is a sin, but you are willing to die if it means you will be the only person she ever loves. âGod,â you tell yourself, even if it is nothing but a hollow syllable. âShe is so damn beautiful.â So, damn, beautiful.
Not a Victory March
Someone, somewhere is saying âlove isnât supposed to be hardâ and I am clenching my jaw until my teeth begin to crumble. Because this house is a placard of three years of hard work, three years of endlessly shrinking only to grow again. It only took us two weeks to paint the walls, but before we ever wet the brushes, we spent two years learning to stop describing the colors of our bruises like they were beautiful. You raked tirelessly at all of the death covering the front yard, just to show that there was something healthy and alive underneath. I fought relentlessly to have your head on my shoulder and your hand on my chest the way they do in romance movies. And sometimes, it still is a battle. When the circles under your eyes are darkest and your lips are chapped from sad, warm breaths, I make sure you feel the air filling my lungs just to remind you that the love weâve worn down can always be brought back to life. We are cleaning every day; scrubbing the sinks and sweeping the floors, and propping the pillows upright for the guests. But this is nothing new, weâve been working this hard all along. Love is a fight. Love requires work. In its most trying times, love is slave labor. But only after you have worked your hands to the bone to nurture a sacred thing and make it better than it was before, can you truly reap the reward: a flame that refuses to go out. A flame that can always be fed.
Perfect Teeth & Wonder
People say I donât smile. Say I only smile when Iâm nervous. Say I only smile when Iâm panicking, and I rarely panic. But we sat in the living room laughing until my face hurt and I remembered how easily other lovers can remind you to appreciate your own. They were so happy and so, light. You leaned in and whispered to me, âThey both have perfect teeth.â They saw you out of the corners of their eyes as they sang along to the songs playing through the speakers, but I hoped they knew we said only good things. Happy things.
We needed that. We need more people like that. The world does, I think. More mountains, more adventures, more laughing and more laying on the floors of strangers. More screened in porches falling apart and more history; the kind about humans and their feelings, not countries and their wars. More crumbs in the car, more sneakers with worn laces. Weâve got a lot more ground to cover.
I read the other day that a river in Europe changed directions, started flowing the opposite way, and I thought to myself, âthe wonder of it all.â

What English Seminar Taught Me
I find you in the dark with my mouth like I have been in the woods for so long, like I am sweating out a fever, like I am starving and you are ripened fruit I donât even eat fruit, but God do I long to sink my teeth in, to fill the gaping void. My mouth is empty and swallowing air My mouth is empty and hungry, hungry, hungry- I say the word the way my poetry teacher did, long and hallowed and trying to swallow more, than what I was given until I have borrowed the sound, and tasted it.
One evening, a cautionary tale-
One evening, a cautionary tale- a field of poppies. Donât fall asleep, you might miss it or worse; you might dream about her.
So you dreamt about her lips, so what? Youâre like a bird in the middle of the flock, a giant arrow in the sky pointing to a home that doesnât exist. (you can afford to make a new one) Remember: a risk is a reward.
Find yourself on a cloud, thinking âher skin is not so porcelain after all.â Let your body take a new shape that fits snug with another. Let her breathe because sheâs been waiting to- sheâs been waiting too.
One evening, you wake up. Youâve listened to all the sad songs in the world and somehow, they donât make sense anymore; you have her to thank for that.
When in France
I bring you flowers with my bare hands; they are bleeding. First my hands, then the flowers.
And it rains so hard that itâs fucking beautiful The river turns pink; plentiful. The city is underwater.
When I drive over bridges, I imagine how I would escape the vehicle if it were submerged.
But you have drowned me before and I did not try to kick out the windows.
Before we actually did
Before we ever kissed, you gave me a journal for Christmas.
And how badly I wish we could have known each other before we actually did How badly I wish I could watch you as you slide through the isles of the book store dragging your finger along the spines before you had ever even touched mine in search of a hardback to wrap in the prettiest paper.
Wish you could see the way I looked at you each time you had your back turned pupils so wide my eyes watered. Laws of attraction but, but Laws of detachment I wasnât allowed to feel my own feelings, no, I couldnât touch you.
So when I finally did, believe that: My insides turned to ivy, intertwining like they had never quite known one another before, that the churches who cursed us came burning down in a violent blaze of glory, that I felt a sense of liberty and justice the pledge of allegiance could never provide me.
I was still in college learning that some poems arenât meant to be read aloud, that some poems should just sit in your mouth until theyâre chalky and dry and youâve milled them over a hundred times. But our poem, our poem should be heard.

Anyway
Iâm wearing yesterdayâs makeup and you, yesterdayâs smile. You look so small on our big bed and I know you must be dreaming when the wrinkle above your eyebrow folds over like a pair of aces whoâs just seen the royal flush. The clock is ticking so loud I canât hear myself think. I donât care if you wonât feel it, I kiss you anyway. I always kiss you anyway because somewhere, the dust is settling. Somewhere, the trumpet plays too soon. Somewhere, someone is wishing they had kissed someone else once more. Have I told you that your blood pumping is the sweetest sound? A symphony? Some days I fear there will never be a musical note to describe it, but thatâs okay beautiful, it will be our little secret.
I am always thinking about tomorrow, and the next day, and the next year, and the five years after that. But when you curl your body into mine, I forget about plans. I forget about lists, and arrangements, and the world goes quiet like New York City in a power outage. Like the desert when the moon cools the sand and the animals are sleeping. Stay with me forever, love. Iâll tie our hearts together like two paper cups with yarn. Iâll stitch up the cuts with needle and thread, over under, over under. Hold still, it will only hurt a moment. And just like that, weâll be intertwined. When my heart beats faster and the string pulls tight, know it is because of you. When it beats slower and my eyelids grow heavy like a sinking ship on the surface of the sea, know it is because of you and kiss me anyway.
Capitol-ism
In DC, the escalators go both ways on both sides. The tunnel is dark and I wait for the ceiling to collapse inward.
I donât walk fast enough for the people dressed in business suits. They push me with their briefcases. They push me without ever making contact.
What is more American than fireworks? Pretty like girls. Loud like guns.
What is more ironic than fog blocking the view? Oohs and ahs suppressed by âwhat the fuck?â and âI canât see!â
What is more symbolic than a white house as the most important home in a country which fails to acknowledge any other color?
I would not have seen the fireworks, anyway. My neck grew sore thinking each bang I heard, was a bomb.
