True North
When I tied myself to you, like yoyo string to finger, like balloon to tiny wrist, the people who had always known me said my smile was different, said the change was palpable. Like a deaf person hearing, like a blind person seeing, it was less of a realization and more of an awakening. My limbs limp with amazement, my body awe-struck.
I never knew a laugh could fill my lungs so fully, give me air, make my ears ring in a good way. My school teachers taught me the trick about direction, taught me never eat sour watermelon. Still somehow, the compass pointed to you. Still somehow, the taste was sweet.
A truth exists in the body when faced with unfamiliarity; it finds its way like a pull, like a magnet, even when the living is leaving. If you find you can’t go on, lay with me. Make it permanent. Carve my name on your headstone like I died a part of you.
“After Language” by Chaia Heller, from My Lover Is a Woman: Contemporary Lesbian Love Poems edited by Lesléa Newman (1996).
Someone: I’d love to read some of your writing some time
Me, who never gets anything finished:
Buried
There is a synonym for everything, I’m convinced of this because there’s always a better way to say it, always a nicer sounding song.
I’ve spent hours contemplating why cathedral holds so much more beauty than church, how a platform is more important than a stage, all of the ways the syllables tie gentle knots to each other when someone whispers “beloved”.
I used to say “I love you so much that it scares me” but I’m learning to find comfort in depth learning to take the outside and turn it inward like the feeling of driving through a mountain; hollow inside but completely surrounded.
If I don’t say “be careful” when you’re leaving in the morning, will you still take the corner slow?
The weight of a thousand dictionaries on your chest is the price you pay when you choose not to speak, pressing until your bones crack and make way for a sharp book’s edge to puncture your heart cave. Sometimes, for this reason only, I crawl out.
So last weekend at Woody’s, the most popular gay bar/club in Philly, a straight guy came up to our group of friends and led with “I think I’m the only straight person here.” A straight friend of mine, who is very careful not to appropriate, sort of rolled her eyes and shook her head. The guy then continued by saying, “I’ll be really uncomfortable if a guy approaches me,” to which my friend responded, “Then don’t go to a gay bar.” He replied, “Oh no no, I’m really comfortable with my sexuality.” My friend then basically told him off by saying this is a space for LGBTQ+ people, if you’re going to make it about you, you should leave.
So many things about this interaction were problematic that I’m still finding it difficult to put my frustration into words. First of all, why come to a gay bar just to make it known that you’re straight and don’t want to dance with men? Second of all, you’ve made it very clear you’re the opposite of comfortable with your sexuality if you have to make these things known. Third of fucking all, it’s so sickening to watch straight people try to make the only LGBTQ+ spaces about themselves, like HELLO EVERY OTHER SPACE IS YOURS!! Straight people in gay clubs don’t bother me, especially because I feel like a lot of straight women feel safer there knowing some sweaty ass clown won’t sneak up behind them to rub his boner against their ass, but this dude should’ve stayed the fuck home.

The Dream
In this version of the dream, I’m not on my way to therapy. The breeze is crisp and the subway stairs don’t smell like piss.
In this version, my cheeks aren’t flushed- my stomach unempty. You are laying on the couch waiting without fight in your fists.
The people begging for spare change turn into people playing violins with the mouths of their cases wide open and those people turn into millionaires-
musicians who never have to want for anything ever again; I never have to want for anything ever again.
In this version of the dream, no one sits next to me on the way home and the train rocks me to sleep.

That which changes
I’m walking around in circles with my literal heart in my hands
it’s all blood and gore, it’s still barely beating, it’s painful
in a delicate kind of way. I’m up at 4:30 every morning
cause you’re knocking on the walls, sending me babies in my sleep,
the kind that cry and curl into the bend of your arm, the same place
you stick a needle- I know what you’re doing, giving me life
in my sleep to cover up all the death. I repeat the last thing I say each time someone leaves
a room in case I never see them again. Thank you, thank you,
thank you, talk to you later. I hold my breath before answering every call
and whisper something just short of desperation to a god
I don’t believe in. Please, please, please, not again. Hope
is a word I no longer own, hope tastes disgusting and bitter and makes
me want to spit, so I cough all day and clear my throat until it’s sore
but somehow, I’m still choking. I use medical terms I don’t know
the meaning of and laugh when I say “I need help” though I really
need help. I think about other things when people talk to me – talk at me
like I’m watching it all happen from some foreign planet. I am different,
now and I tell myself this two times, three times a day, but
myself wants so badly to be the same.

The Time Trope
I know there are poems about the quiet ticking of a watch, when your cheek is rested on your fist and the sound plays in your ear like a bomb ready to explode. I know that the crocodile is an obvious metaphor, his eyes shifting, his jaw cracked open - waiting, but I can’t say if Peter and Wendy knew the same. I know there is a reason grandfather clocks are named after grandfathers, a pendulum swinging for what seems like eternity until suddenly they stop working. It should not be that when I think of baring children, I think of all the hearts I have held they will not get to hold, all the laughs I have loved they will not get to hear. It should not be, but the hands keep on moving. It should not be, and so it is.
Loaded
A house is on fire and what do you save but your dignity? Stranded on an island, the one object you choose is your
sanity. Yet here I am in the house, here I am sitting at the burning vanity watching my face melt in the mirror like candle wax.
Here I am on the island, starving, having picked all the coconuts from their trees, the only air left in my lungs is the air from the breeze
and you smile.
You - smart enough to know that the only things you need to save are the parts of yourself you can’t hold in your hands, so the island
is like a vacation, the house, a burnt pile of scraps, a small price to pay to see another day. But stuck in a situation
and made to choose, there’s no telling what I would do knowing full well the sum of all my parts is you.
