“I’m way too drunk to be driving, so I was gonna walk home– stay on the phone with me, okay?”

“There’s this couple’s contest, and I know we’re not dating, but the grand prize is this big ass load of food– help me.”

“It doesn’t matter if you need me; you broke everything.”

“Everything’s really shitty right now.  So how about you get in this car with me and we drive to wherever for however long?”

“I’ll go if you go.”

“I’ll only do this if you help me.”

“I can’t depend on anyone else, just you.”

“Thank you for always being here for me.”

“You could call be at any time and I’d drop anything if you needed me.”

“All you have to do is show me that you feel the same.”

“I know that I need you, but sometimes the feeling doesn’t seem reciprocated.”

“I’m pathetic, because I go to you for everything, but you’d pick someone over me any day.”

“Can you give me a ride?”

“I didn’t tell anyone else I was leaving… You deserved to know though.”

“I’ll still be here when you get back.”

“Isn’t in terrifying that we both couldn’t go without the other?”

“This ring proves that I’m always here for you.”

“Come here, let me give you a hug.”

“My date stood me up, can you come with me to egg his/her car?”

“My date stood me up, can you come pick me up?”

“The lights don’t shine as bright when you’re not here.”

“I can’t deal with us drifting apart anymore.”

“I feel like I’m gripping with all my might and you’re not even lifting a finger.”

“My friend locked me outside naked.  Help.”

“My friend needs to see I’m dating someone so they’ll stop including me in blind dates–yes, I know we’re not dating, but still.”

“I don’t call you my partner in crime for no reason.”

“Can you come over so I don’t feel so alone anymore?”

“You ran to get here this quickly?!”

Maybe it was for the best that Bucky didn’t notice Steve’s staring. It’d been a long damn night already. Bucky sighed heavily, but before he could let out some kind of choice, biting remark, Steve was handling the blonde chick draped across the bar. Bucky exhaled quietly, relieved even if not quite willing to admit it. He had some pride to maintain, after all. Or something.

“Thanks,” he finally muttered, now draping himself halfway across the bar to lay his head down on it with a groan. Why had he let himself get talked into this? Oh wait. Because bills and rent and shit.

At least he had some nice eye candy here.

“How can you stand this place?” Bucky hissed, glancing furtively around to make sure none of the patrons heard.

Steve chuckled as he sat back a little, using his particularly wide shoulders to hide Bucky from the rest of the club and anyone who might try to bother him. They all needed a break sometimes, right?

"It's no bother - Sharon's not normally like that y'know. Bad first impression." He said.

Three phone numbers later, and Bucky was ready to ragequit the bar. It was flattering, sure, but he wasn’t even remotely interested in the kind of people who’d try to hook up with their bartender. Most of them ended up being women, too, which– well. It’s not like he didn’t like women, but he was tired as hell of people thinking he was straight.

Maybe he’d start flirting with the guys who came in, make some straight boys uncomfortable.

Tempting.

Bucky was just starting to relax a little after a wave of drink orders when– 

Shit.

Bucky’s mouth went dry and cock went hard, because holy shit was that one beautiful hunk of meat acting as a bouncer for the club. It was all Bucky could do to keep his eyes at least mostly above the shoulder line. Filthy fantasies flicked through his mind embarrassingly quickly, and he was very glad to have the bar hiding his lower half.

“Bucky,” he finally grunted, and no doubt he was coming across just as gruff as he did to the customers. “It’s–” He couldn’t even get an answer in before a blitzed girl draped herself across the bar, slurring and begging Bucky for just one more drink. He’d cut her off almost half an hour ago. Bucky’s jaw clenched.

“Sorry, sweetheart. Time for you to sober up.” 

Steve couldn't stop looking at him, because holy shit. Honestly, Steve had never understood the appeal, the whole "bartender" thing had never done it for him, but he had a feeling that it was more the guy behind the bar than the fact that he was a bartender that held his attention so well.

Bucky. Steve grinned, about to speak, when a customer he recognised all but fell over the bar. Steve was on his break, but it didn't take much for him to raise the mic on his lapel to his lips. "Sam, can you come in here a sec?"

"Sharon, hey," He said, reaching out to carefully stand her back up. "We're gonna get you a glass of water," He looked to Bucky, hoping that he was following. "And Sam's gonna sit you outside. Are you with Jasper?" He took the glass of water as Sam came over, pressing it into her hand before she could object. When Sam appeared over his shoulder, Steve carefully moved her back into his arm. "Just let her sober up a bit before you let her back in." He said, turning back to Bucky.

Christ almighty, Bucky’s heart’s gonna flutter right the hell on outta his chest. He’s got it bad for this guy already, and he’s not sure it’s just some physical thing ever. Not that he believes in love at first sight, but this is sure something…

“Yeah,” Bucky croaks, clumsy as he finally shoves the phone back at Steve. “Can’t wait.” Fuck, that blush does things to Bucky. He swallows hard and gives a jerky, awkward wave.

Steve backs away before he can embarrass himself, turning and walking back down the street, still blushing from the tips of his ears down to his neck.

He spends the next few days worrying about what the hell he's going to wear, and none of his friends at work are any help, not when they find out that he has a date. They're content to tease him, but that's about it.

Having made sure he texts Bucky the address and the time, Steve gets changed out of his work clothes (he's a kindergarten teacher, why does he have to wear a proper shirt? It mystifies him) and into a pair of nice dark blue jeans and a light blue shirt, that's maybe a little bit too tight but there's nothing he can do about that now, is there?
