“Jun hyung! I really need your help!” I shouted into the phone. I’ve decided after a long time thinking, I want to ask Y/N to be my girlfriend.
“What’s up, Gyu?” He asked.
I put him on speaker phone as I got a notebook (which is all crinkly and crusty from getting wet too many times) and pen, preparing to write ideas down. “I wanna ask Y/N to be my girlfriend.” I told him, lips pursed.
“That’s great! How are you gonna do it?” He questioned.
I clicked the bottom of my pen. “That’s why I called you. Can you help me come up with a great idea?”
“Of course. You wanna come over?” Jun hyung asked me.
I nod, forgetting he can’t see me. Once I realized, I answered. “Yeah, I’ll be right over.”
When I said I would be right over, I meant it. After I ended the call, I sprinted out of my house with my notebook and pen and ran all the way to Jun hyung’s house.
I didn’t even knock. I walked right into his house. “Hyung!” I yelled.
I heard footsteps come down the stairs. “You really need to work on your manners. I could’ve been naked!” Jun hyung said as he walked in front of me.
“It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen you like that. Besides, you were upstairs. Even if you were naked it’s not like I would’ve seen you.” I laughed before remembering why I was here in the first place. “Let’s brainstorm.”
Jun hyung led us up to his room. “Well, you’re not exactly a simple guy. You’re kind of lazy and you don’t do much.”
“I’m not lazy!” I gasped and held my hand on my heart. Just because Tarter Sauce and I like to have netflix binges two times a week does not mean we’re lazy.
“Yeah, sure.” Jun hyung opened his bedroom door enough for both of us to walk in at the same time. At least I think he did it for that reason. It was a tight squeeze, but we both made it after a bit of a struggle.
“Okay, so Y/N likes dogs, dresses, and the color blue.” I told Jun hyung as I flopped onto his bed. It always smells like axe mixed with a pinch of sweat. Tangy.
Hyung sat down in the chair at his desk. “Okay, that was useless. Plus I didn’t ask, no offense.” He scratched the back of his neck, uninterested.
I scoffed. “Why did I even come over?” I jerked my body, pretending I was going to get up, but Jun hyung stopped me.
“What I mean was that that’s not what we should discuss if you want a good way to ask her out. What’s her personality like?” He explained before asking.
“Hyung.” I bet he could see the hearts in my eyes. “She’s sassy, but she’s always relaxed. She’s really caring, even though she doesn’t like to admit it, and she is really funny–well at least she is to me–but she thinks the way Tarter Sauce eats cottage cheese is–”
“Okay, I think that’s enough.” Jun hyung said as he closed his eyes. He put two fingers on his head, like he was about to use telekinesis or something. What a weirdo. “How about you make a big sign that says something along the lines of Y/N date me.” He suggested.
“Not a bad idea. What else?” I said as I wrote the idea in my notebook.
He rolled over in the chair. “After you ask her, the guys and I can jump out with confetti. It’ll be great.” He smiled at me.
“Wow, hyung. You have amazing ideas. Thanks so much.” I told him as I stood up quickly. “I have to get started on that sign. I’ll send a text in the group chat with the details and time.” I ran out of his house without saying any more. I ran all the way to the nearest craft store and bought everything I thought I would need.
I went to check out to buy everything and hurry home to make the poster.
I didn’t look up as I set everything on the counter. “Hello, did you find every–Mingyu?” The cashier said.
I looked up to see one of my exes, Yoomi. “Oh, hi.”
“What are you doing here?” She asked me as she began checking out my things.
“Just stuff.” I told her. It’s none of her business why I’m in the craft store. I could be a guy who just likes crafts and pinterest.
She looked at me dubiously. “I don’t believe you.” She started checking out the letters individually–which I had put in order on the counter to spell out Y/N be my girlfriend–and I could tell that she was reading what they said.
“Who are you asking to be your girlfriend?” Yoomi questioned as she roughly threw my things into a few bags.
“Y/N? I didn’t even know we sold slashes like this.” Yoomi said, holding up the three characters that spelled out Y/N. (Yes, she is breaking the fourth wall. No, she doesn’t realize it.)
“You probably don’t know her. I’ve known her since before I was even eight.” I said matter of factly. If I had long hair, I most definitely would’ve flipped it.
She rolled her eyes. “You sound pretty serious about her.”
I nodded as I paid the amount needed. “Yeah, she’s pretty awesome.” Y/N is awesome. If there was an award for the most awesome person in the world, she’d get second because I’m first, but she’s that awesome.
“I’m pretty happy to hear that.” I heard a voice say behind me. No, no, no, this cannot be happening. I turned around at a record speed to see Y/N standing there with duct tape, some rope, and a box cutter.
“Y-Y/N! What are you doing?” I asked her as I grabbed my bags, holding them behind my back. “And why do you have those?” I pointed to her very sketchy choice of merchandise.
She squinted. “It’s for my next victim.” I gasped loudly and she rolled her eyes. “I’m joking, Gyu.”
Now, it was Yoomi’s turn gasp. “You-you called him Gyu?”
I ignored her. “Y/N, you know I’m gullible!” I shook my head and remembered that there was a possibility that she heard what I was planning. “You didn’t hear anything, right?”
“Not really.” She smiled at she set her stuff on the counter, getting her wallet out.
I took a deep sigh of relief. “Whew, okay.” I chuckled and pretended to wipe sweat off of my forehead.
Yoomi quickly checked out Y/N’s things. I decided to wait for her since it’s nice and I kind of need a ride home.
“Can you drop me off at home? I ran like a mile today.” I said.
She nodded. “Get in.” I happily jumped into her car and put my bags in the back seat. She did the same and started the car.
The ride was pretty much silent the whole way, apart from the radio that played a couple new songs.
Y/N pulled up to the curb in front of my house and unlocked the doors. I grabbed my bags and stepped out. “Thanks, Y/N. Be here at 6.” I smiled.
Just as I was about to turn to walk towards the house, she stopped me. “Hey, Gyu.” She said. “I heard everything. Don’t be nervous.” She laughed before quickly driving away.
My jaw dropped. I’m not even affected by the fact that she heard, but that she told me not to be nervous? I don’t get nervous!
I shook my head and walked into my house. I saw my mom on the couch. “Hey, Mingyu. Where have you been?” She questioned me, not taking her eyes off of the TV.
“I was at Jun hyung’s. I’m gonna ask Y/N to be my girlfriend.” I told her as I set the bags on the ground.
“That’s great.” She said, still paying attention to modern family or something. I frowned. Wow, she’ll pay attention to a fiction family but not me? Her own son? Wow.
Deciding to brush it off, I picked my bags back up and headed towards my bedroom. I figured I might as well get started on the poster.
Two hours later, I finished the poster. It was honestly beautiful. My art teacher would be proud.
I smiled to myself as I picked up my phone to text the guys.

From: meanest lil hyung [5:27pm]
I set my phone down and stood up from my sitting position.
“Why are my armpits getting sweaty?” I asked myself, sniffing them. Wow, I really needed some deodorant. “I, Kim Mingyu, am not nervous to ask Y/N out, right?” Was I? I’m not used to the feeling, so it’s hard to tell.
Before I could question the strange feeling any more, I heard hard, loud footsteps. My bedroom door swung open and I saw Soonyoung make a beeline for the closet.
“Y/N’s here already!” Seungkwan whisper yelled. Already? She’s like ten minutes early!
“Mingyu?” I heard Y/N'a voices yell up the stairs.
I panicked. “Yeah?” I asked as I ushered the guys into the closet. “Wonwoo, stay here. So it looks natural.” I told him.
“I came up with the idea! Can’t I be the one who sits out here?” Jun hyung whispered.
I shook my head. “Go, she’s coming!” Hyung rolled his eyes but quickly stepped into the closet.
It was silent for a few seconds before the door opened. Y/N smiled at me as she walked in. “Hey.”
“Sup.” I said as I awkwardly scratched my head.
“Hey, Wonwoo. What’s up?” She asked him.
“Hey, Y/N. I’m just hanging with this loser, haha.” Wonwoo said very unnaturally. Thanks Wonwoo. You suck as a best friend.
I shot him the evil eye before Y/N turned back around. “So…”
“Okay, turn around.” I told her. When she does, I reached for the poster–very loudly–and held it up with a smile. “Okay.” I said.
She turned back around with a big smile on her face, but it quickly went away. “Did you hear that?” She asked.
“That really shaky, heavy breathing.” She frowned.
“Stop messing with me.” Y/N warned.
“It wasn’t me! Wonwoo stop breathing so loud!” I shouted at my best friend.
“It wasn’t me either!” He yelled back.
All of a sudden, all three of us heard loud, shaky breathing coming from my closet. “Okay, seriously, Mingyu. This isn’t funny.” Y/N inched towards me while looking back at my closet.
“Okay, stop paying attention to the closet and look at me.” I said.
“But is there someone in there? Like what is going on?” She whined.
“Y/N!” I whined back at her. “I made you this poster so appreciate it already.”
“Okay, okay!” She faced me.
“What’s your answer?” I questioned. That strange feeling from earlier started to come again.
She smiled. “It’s yes, of course.” After she said her answer, the closet door swung open and the eleven other guys jumped out and screamed. By the looks of it, they definitely scared Y/N.
“Oh my god!” She yelled, doubled over. “Why would you guys do that?” She held her hand to her heart.
I chuckled. “Haha! I’m your boyfriend!” Y/N stood and punched my arm. “Ow! What was that for?”
“Why would you let your stupid friends–and Minghao–do that?” She stomped her feet.
Minghao laughed. “I’m not stupid.”
Y/N turned to him and looked at him incredulously. “You know how I am and you still scared me. You’re more than stupid.”
“Okay, Y/N, calm down. Let’s go eat and celebrate our new relationship!” I cheered as I grabbed her hand and dragged her down the steps. “But you have to drive, since I don’t have a car.”
“It’s fine, but the guys are not coming with–” She’s cut off by Soonyoung and Minghao racing to the back seat.
“I guess they are.” I furrowed my brows.
She sighed loudly. “Whatever. At least we get to spend some time together.”
“Yeah, as boyfriend and girlfriend.” I smiled as I took her hand in mine. She smiled back and unlocked her car doors.
Seungcheol walked out of the house with the others, while swinging a tie around. Where he got it, I have no idea. “Let’s go celebrate Y/N and Mingyu!”
I grinned as I looked at my girlfriend. This is probably one of the best days ever.
“Hey, I’m here.” Mingyu said through the phone.
“Okay, I’ll be right out.” I told him as I pulled my shoes on. Mingyu and I had a whole day planned to ourselves. First, we’d walk around town, go to lunch, then the zoo and hopefully we wouldn’t see any of the guys.
Yeah, they’re all really supportive of our relationship, but we never get alone time.
I walked out of the door and see Mingyu waiting on the sidewalk. When he saw me, he smiled and held out his hand. “It’s a great day to walk around.” I said.
“Especially with you.” He grinned. But our happiness was cut short when we heard someone calling out for us.
“Hey guys!” Minghao’s familiar voice rang out. Mingyu and I let out a sigh simultaneously, but forced smiles onto our faces for our friend.
“Hey, Minghao.” I greeted.
“Where are you guys going? Can I come? Can I invite Chan?” Minghao questioned rapidly.
“No.” Mingyu replied, eyebrows furrowed. “Look, we’re cool and all but i’ve literally been trying to go on a date alone with Y/N for like twenty years now and it literally hasn’t happened yet.” He argued.
“You haven’t even known each other for twenty years. Besides, I’ll pay for your food.” Minghao offered.
Mingyu and I stopped, thinking. We looked at each other before nodding. “Alright.”
“Sweet. I’ll call Chan and tell him to meet us there.” Minghao jogged back into his house.
Mingyu sighed. “Well, we won’t be able to spend one alone. Again.”
“It’s okay. Any time I can spend with you is enough for me.” I grinned at him brightly.
“I feel the same.” Mingyu grabbed my hand tightly and pressed his lips to it.
“I guess you really did overcome your fear of commitment, huh?” I laughed.
“Yeah, and you finally remembered me. You should really go get that checked out. Someone of your age shouldn’t have such a terrible memory.”
I hit Mingyu playfully. “My memory isn’t that bad. I did remember you in the end.”
“Yeah, I guess so.” Mingyu laughed. He leaned down and pressed a sweet kiss to my lips right before Minghao came out and met us on the sidewalk.
“Let’s go. Chan’s like halfway there.” Minghao motioned for us to follow him. We did, hand in hand, happily.
