“he’s to be executed. for treason and war crimes.” that horner had been nothing but loyal to azkadellia’s regime seemed to matter very little. the former rebels seemed determine to treat the entire fifteen annuals as nothing but a tiny blip on the otherwise unbroken span of her mother’s reign.

it rankled, although not so much as the immenent death of her soldiers.

DG hesitated to answer. Azkadellia seemed unhappy, and DG wasn’t sure whether it was about this soldier being executed or about the prospect of attending the execution. It could even be a bit of both, but DG didn’t know enough about her sister’s loyal men individually to be sure.

“…Glitch has told me a lot about you, I’ll admit.”

She tilts her head curiously at the tentative question. It isn’t like her sister to be shy, but then, they’re still relearning how they fit together after all these years, so maybe it’s only natural that there’s still some lingering awkwardness.

She nods in answer, then pauses. “Everything okay?”

azkadellia takes a moment to weigh her thoughts before she answers, half wishing that DG would’ve brushed her off for once. 

She thought about it, searching her memory for some recollection. The name sounded vaguely familiar, perhaps she heard the name when the trial was announced, but she couldn’t place a face to it.

“DG?” 

she’s not prone to fidgeting and it feels awkward, like being fifteen again, but at the same time she can’t summon enough composure to stand still. nerves, azkadellia thinks, do not suit her.

She tilts her head curiously at the tentative question. It isn’t like her sister to be shy, but then, they’re still relearning how they fit together after all these years, so maybe it’s only natural that there’s still some lingering awkwardness.

He couldn’t believe his luck. They’d left him practically unguarded, relying on the cells alone to hold him. He couldn’t even hear the heavy footsteps of the guard anymore. Had he gone to the ball? Was he already unconscious, as drunk on success as on the Queen’s finest wines? 

He wasn’t there, anyway. And that absence was Zero’s best chance.

When DG - the Princess DG, and wasn’t that just a headache in the making? - had broken out of her cell, there had been bits of food scattered around the turning wheel. She’d probably been trying to lure one of the tower’s rats down onto it before the Mutt had arrived to ‘rescue’ her. Stix had laughed at that. 

“Stupid girl,” he’d said. “How did she evade you so long, eh, Captain?”

Even if they were on the same side, Zero found himself pleased that the man was probably dead. 

The galling part of it, really, was that it was a good plan. It was a very good plan, in fact. It just took a little time and patience.

A little time. A little time, and…

The rat squeaked as it dropped and Zero grinned as the door slid open. It screeched like a Demon, but he doubted anyone would hear it.

Now all he had to do was get away unseen.
