Dagger and Scabbard

Dha Sword

Dated: 19th century

Culture: Burmese

Measurements: overall length 34.5 inches (880mm); blade length 26.25 inches (675mm)

The sword features a multi-fullered blade very much like some Indo-Persian or Chinese blades. It is decorated with silver and brass koftgari, notably at the heel with a peacock (the national bird of Burma), and numbers/letters on the other side. The spine of the blade is inlaid with a panel of bronze at the base, and the lower third is decorated with very intricate rope twist brass decoration. The remaining length is grooved, again very much like some Indo-Persian / Chinese blades.

Presentation Mameluke Sabre Sword

Dated: circa 1820

Culture: British

Measurements: overall length 36 inches (91.4cm)

Forged of Damascus steel, this Mameluke presentation sabre was carried by officers of the British Army during the early 19th century. The curved blade is richly decorated with intricate Turkish and oriental motifs, including a fire-gilded lion’s head on the hilt, while its gilt and embossed shagreen scabbard features two rings in order to hang from a belt. Mameluke swords take their name from Mamluk warriors of Ottoman Egypt. Today, modern Mameluke swords are worn by U.S. Marine officers, commemorating the Marines’ service during the First Barbary War, 1801-1805.

Dha Sword

Dated: circa 1900

Place of Origin: Burma or Thailand

Measurements: overall length: 39.5 inches (1000mm); blade length: 24.75 inches (630mm)

The long slender hilt is clad in silver featuring silver wire binding. The scabbard is clad in thick silver, with intricate silver filigree work on both sides, highlighted with deep blue, yellow and green cloisonné enamel decoration.

Dagger Cane

Culture: Turkish

Measurements: overall length 36 inches (91.4cm)

This Turkish cane is crafted entirely of metal and enveloped in intricate niello metalwork. An instrument of self-defense, this cane conceals a nearly eight-inch dagger. The handle in the shape of a growling feline could have been used as a bludgeon, while the pointed ferrule doubles as a spear.

Cavalry Sword

Dated: 1780-87

Culture: British & German

Medium: steel, copper wire, wood, foil

Techniques: burnished, chiselled, pierced, faceted

Measurements: overall length 98.3cm; blade length 82cm

Provenance: Carlton House Cat records that the retailer was Bland, presumably taken from the scabbard (now missing)

The sword has a burnished steel hilt with vase-shaped pommel and a prominent acorn-shaped tang-button. the heart-shaped guard and knuckleguard are chiselled with scalework. The barrel-shaped wooden grip is bound with copper wire and foil. The sword features a one-edged blade with fuller.
