Shona's Story: Cannabis and Crohn's Disease
To put it simply, Crohn's disease is an ongoing condition that causes severe inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, also known as the digestive tract. It can affect anywhere between the mouth to the bowels, however most patients with Crohn's disease experience it within the lower part of the small intestine. The symptoms are extremely unpleasant and can include pain, ulcers, fatigue, diarrhea, loss of appetite, etc. Unfortunately experts are still unsure as to what exactly causes Crohn's disease and how to avoid and prevent it altogether, however in recent years more and more doctors and scientists are confirming that medical cannabis products can be a very effective treatment.
Meet Shona, a young woman who was severely stricken with Crohn's to the point where she was bedridden. She had suffered through all the different symptoms and continued to suffer despite a plethora of prescribed medications, finding only a little bit of relief from vaporizing cannabis. Shona was losing weight rapidly due to developing Cachexia, the wasting away caused by Crohn's disease, because her gastrointestinal tract wouldn't absorb any nutrients from whatever she tried to eat. After multiple surgeries and over a dozen different pharmaceuticals the doctors told Shona that there was nothing more that they could do; she was waiting to die.
Until she saw Rick Simpson's online documentary Run For The Cure - the story of a remarkable man who cured his own skin cancer using cannabis oil. However, Shona lived in the medical cannabis-unfriendly state of Kansas and had no idea how she would acquire a pound of cannabis and produce the oil. Not too long after one day when Shona was vaping to ease her pain, her ex-husband happened to notice little specs of cannabis reside on the inside of her vaporizer. They decided to try scraping it off and putting it into empty pill capsules for Shona to take, and after a few days of home made cannabis oil capsules she was able to walk again, eat again, sleep easily, and most importantly Shona began putting on weight. It wasn't long before Shona was able to discontinue all her prescriptions, however the state of Kansas doesn't recognize the medical uses of marijuana. Shona's son tried to speak up at school about how THC oil saved her life during a discussion about the dangers of marijuana, but the school called the authorities and Shona's house was raided of all marijuana and paraphernalia used to create her cure. She was charged with multiple misdemeanors and felonies and her son was taken by CPS agents. Custody was granted to her ex-husband, however Shona was released on bail raised by cannabis activists and is now filing a lawsuit against the city and county officials.
