I know he’s like an American idol or something, but I’ve disliked every Steven King book I’ve read. They’re all engaging, but pulpy and shallow. They’ve never made me stop and reread a line and think, “That’s actually pretty insightful”.

George RR Martin’s output is way too slow for his fans and it’s frustrating. But his books are dense with worldbuilding, a wide array of themes, and tons and tons of character dev. They have difficult plots and subplots, intrigue and war strategy, and moreover they’re enjoyable. You can’t weave all those dozens of storylines together in one draft. Meanwhile, even if you love King’s work, you have to admit at least a few of his books read like they were started and finished in one sitting. And this is why I hate daily word counts. It used to make me crazy because it refocused me on how much I was saying versus the quality of what I was saying. Some time you do have to stop and research a subject in the middle of a chapter. For instance, what is an efrit? Can it just be a haunted car? No, Mr. King. It cannot.
