I seriously can’t believe it’s been two years since I wrote this, it feels like yesterday. This Peeta+Katniss is still one of my favorite Everlarks I’ve written, and I hope you enjoy them, too, if you’ve never read it.

Every month, Effie sends a care package from the Capitol. Katniss always calls to thank her and reminds her it’s unnecessary, but she secretly looks forward to it each time it arrives. Effie keeps it simple – a month’s supply of their favorite hot chocolate, hard-to-find spices or specialty flour for Peeta, random new gadgets that are “all the rage” in the tech world, and always a long letter that ends with “Hugs & Kisses!”

This month’s package includes something different – a small, shiny disc, with a note that says, “A dear friend from Capitol Security approached me with this. I promise you that I only watched a few minutes so as not to intrude on your memories, and I’ve been reassured that this will not be circulated. Watch it together. Love, Effie.” They’re hesitant, but curious, so they insert the disc, and Katniss knows what it is after the first few moments.

“It’s our time on the roof. Before the Quell.” 

And it is. It’s their entire day on the roof, from the moment they open the door, to the late afternoon when Peeta plays with her hair, and finally to the evening when they pick up their blankets and head back into the building. They don’t watch the whole thing – it’s an entire day, after all – but they watch the significant moments. They laugh and shake their heads at the force field game they invented. They sit closer and listen silently whenever there’s conversation. Peeta smiles and squeezes her hand at the words “I’ll allow it.” And Katniss gasps at how beautiful the sunset was that day- it was one of the last she ever thought she’d see.

By the time they’re finished watching, their own sun had set and it was time for dinner. Katniss gets up to make her way to the kitchen, but Peeta reaches for her hand. “You loved me, even then. Real or not real?”

Ara! I heart you!

For canon Everlark, I would actually imagine it to be very quiet and somber during the winter when it snows, for Prim reasons. I see a lot of sleeping in. I see a lot of Katniss in bed, and Peeta baking for her.

But, I also see a blanket on the floor beside the fire. Peeta asleep on his back, and Katniss awake, laying on his chest, looking up at him and trying to count his eyelashes.

I see the fire still going, but now Peeta is sitting on the couch and brushing Katniss’s hair as she sits on the floor in between his legs, staring at the fire, and maybe humming a tune.

I see Haymitch trudging over to grab a loaf of bread, and maybe sneak in a chess match with Peeta while Katniss keeps busy on the couch by tying knots.

And also…a lot of touching. Not necessarily sexy touching (though, yes), just more random touching than usual, because they’re in the house together all day. Fingers brushing hair away from foreheads. Hands rubbing shoulders, heads on laps, feet playfully bumping under the table. All sorts of touching.

“You wanna come over tomorrow night?”

Katniss blinks and looks over at Peeta, currently driving and focused on the road ahead of them. “Tomorrow’s New Year’s Eve,” she says. “You don’t want to head over to The Hob? I thought we were all going there.”

Peeta shrugs. “Eh. Loud bar with a bunch of drunks, or a movie marathon with my best friend?” he says, smiling. “I choose the latter.”

She nods in agreement but smiles sadly, wondering if Peeta’s break up with Madge a few months ago is still eating away at him. “Sure. Sounds perfect.”

His smile turns into a grin, and she instantly grins back. It’s hard not to – Peeta’s cheeriness is annoyingly contagious.

“Explain to me again what we’re doing today?” she asks.

He laughs and shakes his head, turning his car into the Odairs’ driveway. “Okay, one more time: between wedding presents, and holiday presents, and a glitch in their registry, Finnick and Annie got multiples of several household items…”

“Okay…”
