i don’t think straight people will ever truly understand why many of us gay people LOVE being gay and why we would not change ourselves for the world. even the most progressive straight people, deep down, they pity us. they think we’d probably rather be straight if we could. “progressive” people always make the argument that “being gay isn’t a choice, because who would ever choose to be gay??” guess what: i didn’t choose to be gay, but i would. they’ll never understand that once we’re able to accept ourselves and find a safe community, being gay feels amazing. i love being a woman who loves women. and it’s only because of them that i’ve ever had to even think about questioning that. 

I think that whenever a straight person says "who would ever choose to be gay?" They mean: "who would ever intentionally choose to go through all the hardships that straight people put LGBT people through?" Because, unfortunately, when you are gay, it's going to be hard, at one point or another, you are going to face someone closed minded who is going to make it difficult for you. You said it yourself, you have to find a safe community, straight people don't, the world is their safe community. They don't have to struggle to accept themselves because they don't have representation, or a supportive group of friends or a loving, accepting family, a lot of LGBT people do. So what "who would choose to be gay?" means is "who would want to fight so much to be acknowledged and to feel like they belong, if they could simply be acknowledge and belong?". It means "I know being straight is easier". It means "I know you had suffered, because of people's ignorance". It is not an insult, nor is disbelief that someone would prefer something different, it is an acknowledgment of what straight people put you through, both as a community and as individuals. It is an acknowledgment of the LGBT's community strength.
