just found this blog and wanted to mention it in my own blog tonight--(my blog began with me viewing groundhog day every day for a year, but has expanded to other films, generally for a week at a time; this week is life as a house)--so i was curious, if you could encapsulate what it is about THIS film that has drawn you back for so long
Your message was probably sent to me a long time ago so my response is probably not very useful anymore. I apologize. I haven’t logged in for a while. But I will answer anyway. There are many things about Life as a House that have made me a life long fan. I think the screenplay writer Mark Andrus has an uncanny ability to weave the dramatic and the comedic (it’s evident in his other projects like “Georgia Rule” and “As Good as it Gets). He includes the heartbreaks of the human experience with the hilarious really effortlessly in my opinion. Life as a House is no different. It’s quirky, sad, and funny and I love that about it.
I also relate to the characters in different ways, like George’s passivity about his dreams and aspirations. Like Sam I am a child of divorce and a loner who didn’t fit in at school. I also relate to Robin’s helplessness as I’ve gone through similar experiences with troubled family members where I no longer know what to do to help the person.
I think the acting is very good by all the leads and even the secondary characters. The cinematography is great and Isham’s score is unique.
So in a nutshell those are the things that make Life as a House special to me. Thank you for your message.
