Do you like poems?
yes! my favorites are The Tiger and the unnamed werewolf fridge poem
for context these are the poems
also I almost forgot but the r/ambien Gives Us The Sleep post takes a completely serious third place in my favorite poems list:
and COMING IN HOT at NUMBER FOUR on my list, itâs Fragment 147! an accidental poem created when the original parchment containing a text by Sappho was used to stop a wine jug more than 2,000 years ago- eventually the wine dissolved most of the parchment, leaving just a few words and BOY do they prove that the Universe has a sense of irony.
I COME TO YOU WITH AN IMPORTANT NEW ADDITION TO THE ACCIDENTAL POETRY LIST, FROM OUR VERY OWN TUMBLR DOT COM:
I nominate I Am The Horrible Goose That Lives In The Town as poetry and also one of my top 5 favourite poems, somewhere after Nael, age 6â˛s masterpiece.
Iâm on mobile and canât look things up but someone PLEASE add âhow crackers are madeâ

None Of You Know What Haiku Are
I'm going to preface this by saying that i am not an expert in ANY form of poetry, just an enthusiast. Also, this post is... really long. Too long? Definitely too long. Whoops! I love poetry.
If you ask most English-speaking people (or haiku-bot) what a haiku is, they would probably say that it's a form of poetry that has 3 lines, with 5, and then 7, and then 5 syllables in them. That's certainly what I was taught in school when we did our scant poetry unit, but since... idk elementary school when I learned that, I've learned that that's actually a pretty inaccurate definition of haiku. And I think that inaccurate definition is a big part of why most people (myself included until relatively recently!) think that haiku are kind of... dumb? unimpressive? simple and boring? I mean, if you can just put any words with the right number of syllables into 3 lines, what makes it special?
Well, let me get into why the 5-7-5 understanding of haiku is wrong, and also what makes haiku so special (with examples)!

A poem titled "Prayer for Werewolves"
by Stephanie Burt.
Someone will probably love you for who you are.
If not, you'll still find friends,
friends who, given time, or given
warning. will probably gather around you, hold your hands,
and wrap you in soft coats and
blankets till the violence
inside your body ends.
Someone will probably love you for who you are,
not just for who you labor to be.
Maybe you're lost in your skin today. Maybe you're burning
and wish you could tear it all off. Please
don't. You are variously
a marvel, an athlete, a wilderness, a source of warmth
and a way to learn from fear.
When you have claws. your claws are yours, your ears
bristle and are yours; your irises
are citrine, pure, and yours. They let you see
through smog and pine thickets and into the future, where
you need no chains to feel secure,
and someone will probably love you for who you are:
then you will know each other's scents
and nuzzle or lope together. But for
now, you have friends,
who are not going anywhere. Please
stay here. /end description]
[ID: A poem titled Leaves by Ursula K. Le Guin that reads:
Years do odd things to identity.
What does it mean to say
I am that child in the photograph
at Kishamish in 1935?
Might as well say I am the shadow
of a leaf of the acacia tree
felled seventy years ago
moving on the page the child reads.
Might as well say I am the words she read
or the words I wrote in other years,
flicker of shade and sunlight
as the wind moves through the leaves. End ID]

big fan of repetition in poetry. like hell yeah say that shit again
Iâve realized that I canât write poetry and actually want to write it if Iâm not being honest with myself. This means honest about my emotions, my thoughts, how I see the world. And it mean being honest about how I write, not trying to imitate other poets I like. And thatâs helped a lot! Iâve been writing more again!
But I also recently realized that I canât really write anything when Iâm anxious. That feeling just takes up everything and I canât feel anything around it, much less articulate something else. And I second guess myself so much that I stop myself from writing anything when Iâm anxious.
Which, together, it makes a lot of sense why I wasnât really able to write poetry at home, but I would write a ton anytime I spent time away from home.
I love summer so much, and had some thoughts about the end of it đ

this gin-heavy heaven, blessed ground to think gay & mean we bless the fake id & the bouncer who knew this need to be needed, to belong, to know how a man taste full on vodka & free of sin. i know not which god to pray to. i look to christ, i look to every mouth on the dance floor, i order a whiskey coke, name it the blood of my new savior. he is just. he begs me to dance, to marvel men with the dash of hips i brought, he deems my mouth in some stranger's mouth necessary. bless that man's mouth, the song we sway sloppy to, the beat, the bridge, the length of his hand on my thigh & back & i know not which country i am of. i want to live on his tongue, build a home of gospel & gayety i want to raise a city behind his teeth for all boys of choirs & closets to refuge in. i want my new god to look at the mecca i built him & call it damn good or maybe I'm just tipsy & free for the first time, willing to worship anything i can taste. /end ID]

Hey, Neil! On the off-chance of you answering asks before September, I am getting married and wanted to use "Everything I have to tell you about love" as a ceremony reading. Is this okay? Also, I can't see it published anywhere, so would it be okay to translate it into Slovak so my half of the family understands as well? :) Thanks a lot!
Hope life is treating you well, say hi to Terry when you next talk to him, since we all know you have powers and I miss his words.
Of course!
For the curious, you can read it at
My friends Sxip Shirey and Coco Karol were married yesterday. Â I wrote and read something for them at the wedding party. Afterwards a
From todayâs (August 25, 2022) article in Andrea Gibsonâs newsletter Things That Donât Suck, titled âWhat Does Self-Love Feel Like?â
âFor me, self-love is a very distinct and unquestionable state. I am not always in that state but when I am there, I know (I mean I really know) Iâm there. Itâs as clear as the difference between music and noise.
In that place, self-love has nothing to do with my accomplishments, or how great I am at basketball. It has nothing to do with what I have âmade of my life.â Awards and accolades feel utterly irrelevant, and sometimes even absurd. Self-love, for me, is the antithesis of feeling special. The things I cherish in myself are things the universe cherishes in us all.â
These words resonated with me a lot, because for years I didnât understand what self-love was, really. I thought of it as synonymous with being proud of yourself, or self-care, or, later, feeling gender euphoria. But those are all separate things, and none of them are synonymous with self love.
At the end of the article, Andrea asks âwhat does self love feel like to you?â
To me, self love feels like clarity. Itâs not the sun finally shining down after the clouds have cleared, itâs standing in the calm in the eye of the storm and looking around in awe at the majesty of the world around me. Itâs knowing that I am part of that majesty, and letting that awe that I feel for the universe encompass my own existence, too.
I still struggle with self love, I imagine everyone does to some degreeâ we live in a world that constantly tells us we arenât good enough, and itâs hard not to internalize that even a little bit.
But when I do feel self love, itâs like a lightning strike. A bolt of love hitting me in the eye of the storm. It doesnât leave as suddenly as it came though, itâs more like that lightning bolt lit a fire of love, and even though the lightning bolt is gone, that fire still warms me. Eventually it fades and burns out, but I am left in love with myself long after the lightning strike.
That lightning never hits me when I would expect itâ itâs never when I make some great achievement or success, or finally finish something. I feel self love when I feel both completely and wholly myself and at peace with the world around me. Oftentimes, I feel self love when I fall in love with the world around me, because when I feel like a part of the world around me, and I fall in love with it, I canât help but fall in love with myself, too. Other times, itâs just when I feel like me.
One thing I believe is that self-love doesnât involve you seeing yourself as something to love. Itâs not seeing yourself (your actions, your body, your personality) as separate from your consciousness and itâs not your consciousness loving yourself. Self-love is feeling love, appreciation, pride, care, or some other uplifting emotion as your whole self, directed inward (and sometimes outward at the same time). At least, thatâs how I see it.
What does self-love feel like to you?

Iâve never heard it described before. Iâll go first:
âThese days they will find us
Learning that we had it all wrong.
But these days they will find us
Unashamed âcause weâve been learning all along.â
â You Are Loved, Defiance Ohio
I really like this quote because it says so well that weâre all human, weâre going to make mistakes, mess up, and get things wrong, but we will still learn from every mistake we made, and we grow. Your past doesnât have to haunt you because you arenât your past. You have learned from your past to grow into who you are today.
And I will always think that concept is really beautiful.
Quote and art credit go to Dalia Sapon-Shevin
From a survey I was asked to fill out for my college; I think it has the potential to make a cool poem (or cool poems):
I think of the place I live as a community composed of interconnected parts
I think of the place I live as an economy composed of interconnected parts
I think of the place I live as an environment composed of interconnected parts
I think of myself as part of the local community
I think of myself as part of the local economy
I think of myself as part of the local environment
