I’m no good at writing compelling recommendations but I’m begging you all to give this game a shot. Magium is a completely free (unless you pay to get rid of ads) chose your own adventure game set in a complex fantasy world with fantastic characters that I love deeply. I spent a solid 5 hours on my first playthrough of the first book and rushed through what’s up of the second book the next day after going back for achievements. What I think makes it unique, besides the well-written novel you’re basically getting to read for free, is the stat system. It gives everything that extra kick so that each choice you make really leads to a different game experience, which gives you so much freedom in customization of your story. My Barry could be completely different from yours, with different skills, different priorities, and even different allies.

The story isn’t historical fiction, but it is historically inspired. I mainly take inspiration from the 1750s, but things will be added for the story’s sake (electricity, plumbing, etc) I guess it’s somewhat steampunk, but not in the traditional sense.

Reena

Mermaid princess of a near Caribbean Sea. Extremely scholarly. Loves to learn. Social, but cautious. “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” subverted. Story begins with her journey to find her biological mother. 🧜🏻‍♀️

Birthday: June 15 (is it bad if I want them to have my birthday? That’s June 13th)

Height: 5’4” (at 20)

Favorite stories: Cinderella, The Odyssey, Much Ado About Nothing, Any Greek Mythology

Biggest dreams: begin a music & dance program for every district in Adrien’s kingdom.

Biggest fear: Heights (there’s more but we’ll simplify it to this)

An Accomplishment: sang at a town cultural festival with folk music. First time singing in front of anyone in the human world.

Activities: Exploration/Hiking, Self Defense, Dance, Music (Vocal & guitar or piano), Writing (she is a scholar of classical literature by the age of 16)

Flaws: Won’t share her whole story. Claims to be open and close to Adrien but withholds inform from him. Sorta manipulates him for his safety. Totally insecure with her, clearly, romantic feelings towards him.

Another fun fact: until she’s ‘fully human’ all of her outfits will be minimal and in pastel colors. She’s supposed to imitate a ghost. (I couldn’t really portray that with my cheap crayola coloring pencils)

Adrien

A shy prince of an incredibly progressive kingdom. While nervous about socialization, he makes friends easily and has a heart of gold. Even in his awkward years, he will always do his best to do good. Even in her absence, he’s always a mama’s boy. Extremely involved in his kingdom and the well being of his people.🤴🏻

Birthday: June 15

Height: 6’2” (at 20)

Favorite stories: Cinderella, The Odyssey, Hamlet, Robin Hood

Biggest dream: Establish a writing and music organization throughout the kingdom. Especially for those who work a lot. He believes everyone needs a balance and a well rounded life. (Projects for princes and princesses begin around 8 years old)

Biggest fear: Deep Waters

An Accomplishment: Finally ended a 200 year dispute with a neighboring kingdom at age 17. He went on tour with the princess of the nation to promote the truce between the two. (Reena joined too!)

Activities: Self Defense, Fencing, Dance, Writing, Painting, Storytelling (he volunteers to read to children to encourage literacy), Music (piano & guitar), Hiking/Exploring

Flaws: Too dependent on others, very shy (Reena and Adrien balance each other out as they grow up), withholds feelings & worries, will go the extra mile for anyone but to the point of hurting himself or possibly others, can be swayed by the wrong people occasionally

Another fun fact: if he weren’t a prince, he would be a teacher or vetenarian. Adrien loves working with children on music or art. He also helps animals in need and will nurse them back to health if necessary. (Like a cat he found when he was 3. Unfortunately they couldn’t keep it, but the kitten did find a forever home thanks to his help) This is a huge part of how he meets Serena.
