influenced heavily by headcanons and canon divergence,  of tnt’s the librarians,  by zanza.

SHE/THEY   /   27   /   MOUNTAIN TIME

eve loves this.  these quiet,  peaceful moments where it’s just the two of them.  they’re not rare but they’re not exactly abundant  —  so she’s content with cherishing every one of them.  even if there’s a hint of melancholia attached.

“you usually make excellent points,”   she counters,  amusement heavy in her tone.   “and i have to say,  ‘i suppose there are worse fates’?  isn’t even close to being one of them,  honey.”   but she’ll let it slide,  with the knowledge that he means well and that it’s only a matter of time before he digs himself far deeper than he could here.  but god,  she loves him.  eccentricities included.   “but i guess if i beat out dragons?  that’s a win i’ll take,”   and levity’s returned,  along with the soft smile on her lips.

it’s a smile that shifts to surprise quickly enough,  though.  ‘our vows’?  their vows!?

and the way he just blows right past it,  like he’d said nothing at all?  it’s enough to give her emotional whiplash.

“i’m positive the library likes you just fine,  flynn,”  there’s a hint of impatience in her tone,  something she hopes indicates how ready she is to rewind a little,   “but i’m gonna need you to back up for a second here.  our vows?  is there something i should know,  here?”  

The smile on his lips widen at ‘honey’, he has always been a sucker for endearements. “They breathe fire and you –” brown eyes dart around, trying to find some inspiration, but it’s no use, “– also do. I let the analogy get away from me. I admit.”

“Hmm?” he hums, still not quite caught up with his own words. Eve is a smart girl, always catching on to things quickly, why does she need him to rewind? What did he say that was so confusing? His face whitens when it finally clicks – he did not mean to say that! Well, not this early, at least! Of course it’s where they are going, he might be a runner, but he isn’t an idiot, this thing between them is about forever, isn’t it? She is his partner, his better half, the person whose hand he reaches for when he is scared or happy. Eve is his favorite person.

Brow furrowed, Flynn starts taking a few steps back, unsure of what to do. This is not a conversation he wants to have, not now. Soon! One day, but not now! Searching her face, he sees this is not a feeling they both share – she definitely wants to talk about it. “Eve -” he starts, in that all important tone that usually implies he has something very important to say, “you really think the Library likes me?” and instead of saying what he is feeling, he takes the cowards way out, begging her with his eyes to drop the subject for now.

“you...  tried,”   eve allows gently,  a soft chuckle signaling her amusement    it’d be easy to be offended by plenty of the nonsense that comes out of  ( @wcrlds​’ )  mouth when he’s not really thinking.  turns out that’s an advantage to the whole ‘soldier’ thing:  choosing her battles is at least a little easier,  and with how many of those she faces on just about every front...  well,  she’ll take all the help she can get.

a battle she’s not gonna drop makes her glad for the decision to allow the dragon thing to slide as the guardian careful eyes her startled librarian.  he wants to run.  eve knows him well enough that she can see that clearly,  but that’s not fair.  that’s not remotely fair,  he doesn’t get to just say that sort of thing and take off!  that’s not how this works.  to his credit,  flynn doesn’t actually run,  but the color draining from his face is enough to prompt a deep frown.  had...  had he meant it?  even a little bit?  based on just how petrified he seems,  eve can’t say and she’d be lying if she even tried to claim to like that.  

❝ it sounds like we’re here for the same thing. ❞   which prompts the question of how the other had gotten onto the artifact’s trail. layla doesn’t think she’s a criminal here to steal this previously-stolen object, but she herself isn’t… alright, legally she’s a criminal, but morally she’s sound.  according to her code at least.  she doesn’t know if she can trust a stranger, but she’s willing to listen.

flynn was supposed to be here...  he was supposed to be here,  wasn’t he?   yeah,  yep,  she’s positive  —  eve’s precise and on top of her schedule.  the librarians might have brains,  but when it comes to the little stuff like...  oh,  say...  keeping track of what day it is or where they’re supposed to be...?  eve’s got the advantage.  historical dates and times?  they can typically prattle ‘em off like it’s nothing,  but knowing that this is the time and place she’d agreed to meet flynn is something the guardian knows she’s correct about.
