Part 1
2 ~ Look Who's Back
Jacqueline
On the day the twins returned to town, Jacqueline was outside scrubbing away on her washboard while humming a song that Sammie had sung to her, trying to get her thoughts on it. It was a hauntingly beautiful melody, one that she hoped would be memorable. She found that she could get her work done faster if she hummed tunes.
Her humming came to an abrupt stop when she heard the sound of a car pulling up into her yard. She looked up and stood frozen, her ears ringing as she saw his face — Elias Moore. He turned off the car just as Sammie jumped out with his guitar in tow, as always, beaming as he walked up to her.
"Hey Jack, guess who's back and what we're doing later on tonight?" Jacqueline couldn't meet Sammie's bright eyes as he spoke excitedly. He looked much the same, except now he seemed to be living quite well, evident from the gold on his teeth and his sleek, tailored red suit. She finally exhaled after holding her breath, just as Elias walked up to her.
“Hey there, Jacqueline. It’s been a while.” She looks at him intently, then turns to Sammie.
"Sammie I love you so I'm gonna give you eight seconds to get him the fuck out my face" You dropped the clothes you were washing with such force that water splashed everywhere, and then you angrily walked into your house.
"I didn't think she was still mad," Stack said to Sammie.
"I told you, Stack, she's been keeping all the anger for you inside, except when we are together writing." Stack looks over toward your home.
"You mind sitting out here for bit while I talk to her" Sammie nods in agreement as Stack makes his way into your house
"Stack I will shoot you if you don't get out of my house," Jacqueline says softly but loud enough to be heard Stack walks up to her at a slow pace.
"Jackie baby you wouldn't hurt me now" she walks away from Elias towards the kitchen to avoid him trying to forget his presence in her house.
"You'd be surprised what I'd do to the man who left me like some loose woman of the night," leaning her hands against the counter, trying to remain calm
"Baby, I didn't mean to leave you like that so suddenly, but Smoke needed me, you know. I had to have my brother back, but I promised I didn't mean to hurt you, Jacqueline." She stiffens when hearing her name drip from his mouth. She turns around and looks at him with disappointment.
"You and Smoke decided to go running and tearing it up in Chicago with Capone. At least now I understand why you were gone for so long. You want to know what hurt me the most? You had just told me you loved me, and then you left like a thief in the night. Maybe if you had written me a letter or two during these past six or seven years, I might have been more forgiving. I know Elijah's reasons for leaving, but did you really have to go at that moment?"
She sat down at her little kitchen table, buried her face in her hands, and fought back the tears streaming down her cheeks. Elias came over, took off his red hat, and placed it on the table. He gently took her hands, brought them together, and pressed a long, lingering kiss on them before looking up into her beautiful eyes.
"Jackie, I never meant to leave you, but my brother needed me. I love him just as much as I love you; I had to have his back. I just want to say how sorry I am. There wasn't a minute or a day that I didn't have you on my mind. I promise you, I’m here for you and ready to stay with you if you'll have me, baby."
"Elias, I'm having a hard time trusting you right now, and your absence really hurt me. However, I've missed you, and I love you with all my heart and soul. I've felt this way for a long time, but you broke my heart so deeply, Elias." He gently placed his hands on her cheeks, gazing lovingly into her eyes.
He starts a trail of kisses up her arm. Jacqueline was torn between her heart and her mind at that moment. She always knew the connection between the brothers was deep and complex—no one could ever come between them. Their father was the perfect example. But Elias had never made her feel like she had to worry; he made her feel like the North Star, someone he would always follow and adore. As Elias's kisses move up to her neck, she lets out a slight whimper. Maybe there’s a chance for them to be together again.
"Let me heal what I broke I promise I won't do again if you let me baby please I love you so much Jacqueline Rosette Baker" he finally leans in and kisses Jacqueline passionately pulls her up from her seat and wraps his arms around her waist.
Using his hands to caress up and down her body Jacqueline couldn't take it anymore. Her lips craved to connect to his lips after all this time he still makes her body heat up in ways no one else could accomplish she wraps her arms around his neck in somewhat tight hold.
Elias was getting more handsy as he brings his hand down to her ends of her dress pulling it up at the same time he assaulted her neck with kisses and sucks that left a couple of grasps leaving her mouth something finally clicked in Jacqueline's mind when she remembered Lewis and also fucking Mary she pushed Elias so hard making him bump into the a corner of the table making him wince rubbing the spot he hit.
"Did you really think you could just kiss me and fuck me and all would be forgiven hell no you lost your chance when you fucked that damn white girl behind my back" Elias eyes widen in surprised but fixes it quickly back with a straight face instead
"What are you talking about ain't mess with no white girl" She threw a plate at him and he luckily ducked and it hit the wall behind him
"YOU GONNA SIT HERE AND LIE TO MY FACE ABOUT FUCKING MARY" Elias couldn't hide the guilt on his face when you named the exact white girl he mess with
"Look, Jackie, it was just one time. Her mom was looking out for us, and she was always around. She had a crush on me, and one night, after Smoke and I had been drinking, she caught me when I was drunk. I promise I never wanted anything with her; it happened because I was vulnerable. It didn't mean anything to me, so I didn't think I should ruin what we have because of her. I'm really sorry, Jackie."
"Look I have a man who treats me with love and respect. He didn’t leave me in the middle of the night like you did. I can't do this with you anymore, Elias. I'm not that same little girl waiting for you in my momma's shed. You should just forget about us. Now get out of my house and don't come back." She crossed her arms over her chest.
She straightened her dress and looked Elias in the eye, giving him a look that told him she meant it.
"I truly am sorry, Jacqueline. I only love you; I've always loved you since that first night together in your momma's shed." He grabbed his hat and placed it back on his head, looking into Jacqueline's eyes one last time before exiting through the front door. She closed it behind him and let out silent cries into her hands, feeling as though her heart had been cut open and was bleeding. Elias didn't realize how hard it was for her to let him go, even when her body and soul were screaming at her to just listen.
Stack
Sammie and Stack were driving to the train station to meet a friend who would play music at the juke joint. However, Stack’s mind was elsewhere. He knew that Jacqueline would be upset about him leaving and disappearing for seven years. He had hoped that his night with Mary was just a bad dream, but Jackie knew the truth, and she was furious. Despite her anger, that kiss he shared with Jackie had brought him back to life. Chicago seemed dull and lifeless, even with all the activity around him. There was always something missing, but it wasn’t something—it was someone, and that someone was Jacqueline.
Her presence was the closest thing to freedom he had ever experienced. He fell in love with her the day he chased away a teenage boy who was making her smile and giggle. Yes, he was jealous—not just because the boy was talking to his lady, but because he almost got to experience her joyous spirit for a moment too long. Her beauty might catch your eye, but her aura makes you want to stay in it. What he truly love about her are the dreams of the future she envisions. Some of them are silly predictions, but others are beautiful visions of a bright future that make you envy the present terribly.
Her dreams are part of the reason he left with Smoke for Chicago. He wanted to see if he could create enough to build a life for them. It didn’t have to be perfect, and he couldn’t imagine doing that with anyone else. He knew that the night with Mary would come back to haunt him, but he'd hoped she would hear it from him first, so he wouldn’t seem like a liar and a cheat. Just then, Sammie finally interrupted his thoughts.
"Stack did you hear what I said"
"Nah man say it again for me" he fixes his thoughts focusing on his grand opening
"I asked if I could drive?" He smile slightly
"On the way back" Sammie shakes his head
"Alright did you fix things up with Jac" he frowns slightly
"Nah man whos this new nigga around her you know him" Sammie looks everywhere outside the car before he mushed him in the shoulder real quick
"If you know something tell me" he sternly asked he sighs
"It's that guy, Lewis Jackson, who owns the colored clothing store in town. He makes a decent living and came around about five years after you left. He's a nice man and treats her well."
His shoulders tense up in anger. I can't believe this guy has his woman.
"So he's been around a while huh doesn't matter my Jackie can't resist me for too long after I show what I've got for her and doing that thang she loves for her"
"It better be good or she's gonna shoot you dead for wasting her time, and what thang are you talking about?" He smiles brightly and begins explaining about the special button all women have.
Jacqueline
After Stack left, Jacqueline collected herself in the bathroom and then returned to work outside on her washboard. She couldn't stop thinking about Elias—wondering who would name themselves Stack and why he would dare to show up at her house after all these years. Her thoughts swirled in her mind.
Until her boyfriend Lewis pulled up in her yard, she really didn't feel like putting on a big, bright smile for him. She started to hate herself for that. Lewis was a great guy—any woman would be lucky to have a man like him.
"Hey Beautiful" Lewis says as he exits his car and walks quickly up to her kisses her quick on the lips
"Hey handsome what are you doing here I don't usually see you until sunset" she managed to give him a small smile
"I had to come back real quick during lunch to ask if you wanna go out tonight there's this new place in town everybody and their mama was buying up the store today because of that why not take my lady out somewhere new to show off that dress I bought you" she finished up the clothing she was scrubbing wriggling the water out then placed in a basket and carrying it the clothesline with Lewis following her
"I don't know Lou I don't feel like going out tonight I had an angry customer earlier I just wanna finish up my work, eat then sleep" Lewis comes up behind her wraps his arms around her waist as she finishes hanging up the clothes
"Aww an even better reason to go out tonight we can drink and dance to cheer you right up" planting a quick kiss on her cheek
"I have another load I need to finish before the sun sets." She clipped up the last wet item, and Lewis unwound his arms from around her. He turned her body towards him by her hips and took both of her hands in his.
"Sweet Jacqueline, you've been working too much lately and barely have time for me anymore. Just one night—I'll even stay over tonight and help with the laundry as soon as the sun comes up. Would you go then?" He looked at her with puppy-dog eyes, and she couldn’t help but feel tempted to give in. However, she wasn’t in the mood to dance the night away. Still, maybe she could forget all her troubles with liquor and her boyfriend, who treated her like a queen. Perhaps this would push her to move forward with Lewis and leave her first love in the past where he belonged.
"Alright, I'll go, but can we leave early to get some sleep?" Lewis leans in.
"I hope you won't be too tired for me later tonight," he said as he kissed her. Jacqueline kissed him back, but she didn't feel the same electrifying chill that coursed through her body, like when she kissed Elias.
