for a moment, hyejoo doesn’t say anything. she just sits there, the soft echo of the final chord still lingering in the air, her eyes fixed on the dim reflection of the two of them in the glass. it’s quiet enough that she can hear the faint hum of the equipment, the drowned out sounds of traffic outside.
“you wanted me to hear it first?” she asks softly, like she’s not entirely sure she deserves that. then she smiles — small, but genuine. “i'm honored.” her tone carries that mix of teasing and sincerity that’s become second nature around him. but she doesn't know why she's surprised, as if she doesn't run every melody and every lyric idea she has by him. “it’s beautiful though.” she says it simply, but she really means it. “you always make things sound so natural. i feel like maybe your brain is built different from the rest of us." hyejoo turns to him with a smile. "but i can tell you put a lot into it.” her voice softens just slightly. “and for what it’s worth, i think it does sound like peace. or maybe like…the moment right before it.”
then, after a moment, she brightens again, smiling teasingly. “so. when does the world get to hear this, or am i your exclusive test audience forever?”
yeonwoo lets out a quiet breath, something between a laugh and a sigh, and leans back in his chair as if that might steady him. “exclusive test audience forever sounds tempting,” he says lightly, eyes still on the dark screen instead of her. “but no… eventually it’ll have to leave this room.” he reaches up to rub at the back of his neck, a familiar nervous habit. “i just—before it becomes something everyone gets opinions on, i wanted to know how it felt to someone i trust. someone who listens past the surface.” his fingers tap once against the desk, betraying him far more than his voice does.
he finally looks at her then, really looks, and there’s something openly fond in his expression that he doesn’t bother masking in private. “you know, when you said it sounds like the moment right before peace…” he trails off, smiling a little wider now. “that’s exactly where i was trying to sit. that breath you take when things finally slow down. when you realize you’re okay.” he glances back toward the booth window, the faint reflection catching them again. “i think i’ve been chasing that feeling a lot lately. trying to bottle it before it disappears.”
there’s a pause, softer this time, like the song hasn’t quite left the room yet. “it still needs work,” he adds, quieter, almost careful. “lyrics, structure… maybe even the key.” he shrugs, though his eyes warm when they return to her. “but hearing you say that... it helps. more than you know.” he gives her that same fleeting smile as before, restrained but real, and reaches forward to stop the track completely. “stay a little longer? i might want to play it again. or… maybe show you where it started.”
