Charles’ post-race interview - British GP 2026
charles to canal post WIN in silverstone!
int: charles, thank you for joining us with that big smile. i’ll try again, what was your secret, what did you change on the car to get this first victory since austin 24, 37 gp without a win?
charles: it’s been too long! but i’m really happy because it’s true that i have always been extremely honest about how i feel and what i do but it does expose me a bit because when i say after the sprint ‘i think i found something, if it works i’m happy’, i still need to prove it on track. yesterday it went really well in quali but i still had this doubt about the race, whether the feeling would be good and the feeeling was amazing so i’m very very happy. it has been difficult recently and we worked so hard, i know that from the outside ir’s not necessarily obvious sometimes but we did everything to find that feeling back and today it was the case so i’m grateful for all the work the team has done. it wasn’t easy, not for me but not for my side of the team either. i’m very happy that we’re back on the top step of the podium
int: we can see your joy and relief. there were two big moments, the start and the end of the race when we didn’t know if it would re-start or not, tell us about it?
charles: the first moment was positive because yesterday the start hadn’t gone well. today i knew i needed it to be good because otherwise it would cost a lot so i was happy about the start. then the pace was there and the feeling also but we were also lucky with kimi, sometimes it’s needed, it would have been hard to keep him behind without that. once he had this issue, i told myself, now i just need to manage the car. i owuldon owuldadioowulduld take any risks, i won’t take the kerns, ,’i’ll try to be careful’ because i had also heard that the mercedes had had a puncture. i needed to be careful. then we had the safety car, i thought to myself ‘not again’, it wasn’t great that have that news in the car but the biggest issue, and we may talk about it in the next debrief, was that the car needed to slow down for the rest of the grid, i think we didn’t go faster than 140 km/h and my tires were freezing cold. if there had been a restart, it owuld have been extremely complicated but in the end we won anyway so i'm happy.

charles to canal post-quali in silverstone
int: will you tell me what you changed now? charles: *giggles* no *giggles again* no but it's good to have at least one session where the feeling is there because it's true that there have been quite a few sessions where it wasn't. in these moments you ask yourself a lot questions. it's important to remain cautious though because it was only a quali session and tomorrow we need to prove that during the race everything works but what i changed gave me back a feeling with the car that i hadn't had in a long while so i'm satisfied about that but we'll see tomorrow during the race
Charles post quali in Zandvoort to Canal +
LD : you’re 6th today, your position may correspond to what you imagined coming into quali but the gap is large, you’re more than 9 tenths away from pole position. How do you explain that?
Charles : if we had an explanation we would have done something different today but unfortunately we don’t have one and that’s what’s worrying. 9 tenths today, that hurts, it’s been a few races now that we haven’t been in the same rhythm as the top teams but 9 tenths on a circuit like that, relatively short, it hurts. We’re going to have to work, unfortunately I repeat myself a lot this year but that’s what we’re trying to do, trying to bridge the gap but as of now it’s not working. I hope the upgrades that we will bring will help us get back into the fight for the podium at least.
LD : of course you always fight, but do you think tomorrow is going to be a lesson to learn more than an opportunity to perform and fight for the podium?
Charles : of course, we have to fight to get every available points. We’re in this moment where the team is struggling a bit so we need to limit damages at this point. We will try to get as many points as we can at home. Here, being higher than 6th will obviously be complicated if it’s a normal race with no problems or anything else.
