The Artist Speaks: macedoniasky
I love “Call Me By Your Name”-inspired art. Perhaps because I’m not artistically inclined myself, I always wonder what goes into creating it. @macedoniasky took the time to answer some questions about these pieces.
Q: Were you inspired more by the book or the movie?
A: Saw the movie first, then read the book. Can’t decide which I love more. Paintings inspired by the movie and book cover.
Q: What mediums did you use? What sizes are they?
A: Each 8x10 acrylic paint on canvas.
Q: Why did you choose this particular scene?
A: (Top) Inspired by the blues and the angles. (Bottom) The lighting in this scene is amazing! But also Elio’s face…he’s pretending to be uninterested, almost bored, but inside he’s confused and anxious and full of desire.
Q: Where did the work end up?
A: Stacked in my closet until I give it away to a worthy home.
Q: Is there a quote from the book and/or movie that goes best with the work?
A: (Too many to choose from!) “Not a fire of passion, not a ravaging fire, but something paralyzing, like the fire of cluster bombs that suck up the oxygen around them and leave you panting because you’ve been kicked in the gut and a vacuum has ripped up every living lung tissue and dried your mouth, and you hope nobody speaks, because you can’t talk, and you pray no one asks you to move, because your heart is clogged and beats so fast it would sooner spit out shards of glass than let anything else flow through its narrowed chambers. Fire like fear, like panic, like one more minute of this and I’ll die if he doesn’t knock at my door, but I’d sooner he never knock than knock now. I had learned to leave my French windows ajar, and I’d like on my bed wearing only my bathing suit, my entire body on fire. Fire like a pleading that says, Please, please tell me I’m wrong, tell me I’ve imagined all this, because it can’t possibly be true for you as well, and if it’s true for you too, then you’re the cruelest man alive.” (p. 14)
Q: Is there a song from the movie soundtrack that goes with the work? Or another song?
A: From the soundtrack, Futile Devices by Sufjan Stevens. Not from the soundtrack, I Only Have Eyes For You, The Flamingos.
