So I went to the doctor today. Unfortunately, she wasn't much help with trying to find me a therapist. she put me on a triple cocktail; trazadone, cymbalta and Ativan and wants to see me in three months. i'm getting really frustrated, I just feel like no one listens to what I have to say.
I’m so glad you checked in with me, and I’m really glad that you saw a doctor. That’s a pretty normal set of meds, and I hope they work for you. If they don’t, it doesn’t mean that meds CAN’T work, just that your brain isn’t responding to them, so your doctor will try something different.
Most doctors who prescribe medications don’t do talk therapy, and some of them have awful bedside manner, because they don’t seem to have the empathy that a good talk therapist has. It doesn’t mean they don’t care, but that they don’t have the same training as a talk therapist does, and are more concerned with making sure the meds they prescribe are working than they are with helping you understand why certain things trigger anxiety in you.
But I think it’s still a good idea for you to look for a talk therapist who can help you work through your feelings. You can call your health insurance provider and they should be able to help you find a talk therapist who will be able to work with you. That therapist, whoever he or she is, will talk with your doctor so they are on the same page with regard to your treatment.
On a personal note: I found that medication was really important for the chemical imbalance in my brain, but the talk therapy was also really important to help me understand and work through the underlying issues that were part of my Depression. It’s a process that takes time, and you are worth the time and effort.
I’m not the boss of you, but I strongly suggest that you make it a priority to find a talk therapist, and see him or her at least once a week if you can afford it (most therapists will work on a sliding scale to help you afford the treatment that you need).
Please keep checking in, okay? I’m thinking about you.
