letâs make one thing very clear about the twilight renaissance: it is not for outside consumption
you wanna hang out and have fun and talk about the cullens? cool! welcome! weâre happy to have you here. you wanna point out questionable aspects of smeyerâs world and her viewpoints so we can engage with the story more critically and not reinforce toxic ideas? awesome. thanks for helping us learn and grow. you wanna nostalgically shame-love a piece of media from your childhood that you donât think is good anymore but still holds personal value? us too!!Â
you want to quietly watch and enjoy the memes in good faith without actively participating? fab. you want to show your friends who arenât into twilight some funny memes that you genuinely love bc you want to share the positivity with someone you care about? great!
all good faith participation in the renaissance is welcome
what is absolutely NOT acceptable is taking the content YOU deem worthy and putting it elsewhere in order to earn Internet Points.Â
that means: reblogging a twilight meme you think is funny with tags like âi hate twilight but...â âi canât believe twilight is back, yâall bitches are crazy but i laughedâ or otherwise making disparaging comments about the fandom, or somehow implying that twilight is some awful, shameful girly thing that should be destroyed except for This One Worthy Piece of Content thatâs allowed to stay, because you declared it so
that means: reblogging/sharing twilight content from 2018/19 in order to make fun of or shame the people who made it
that means: distancing yourself from the fandom but trying to look funny and original by posting renaissance content on different platforms without credit or permission
yeah, we see you, Buzzfeed. And you, Ranker.Â
The twilight renaissance is not here for you to profit off of, financially or socially. It is not here for you to exploit. You guys all did plenty of that a decade ago.Â
The twilight renaissance is a smallish group of hilarious, mostly gay, mostly women, who were mocked mercilessly for their harmless interest in a popular piece of media when they were actual children. This is us, grown up, refusing to feel shame over something that brings us joy, rejecting the invasive sexism that made twilight so popular to hate in the first place, and engaging critically with a piece of media that was a transformative part of our lives. To everyoneâs shock, weâve managed to create a fairly positive, self-aware and constructively critical, fun, welcoming, queer friendly space out of something that reeked of toxicity a few years ago.Â
if youâre not here to respect and appreciate that, then
 leave us the fuck aloneÂ
EDIT: hey, Iâve edited this post to take out the stuff about Julia/Facebook. This was not meant to be a callout post about her specifically but rather a real critique about the ways in which people are interacting with the fandom. Itâs still not cool to repost peopleâs content without credit, but obviously context matters and the situation couldâve been handled better.Â
