Let's flip it!

This is the six session projected designed to work the concept of extinction and the protection of habitats and ecosystems. The rubric is designed to evaluate the videos produced during the project.

I’ve enjoyed the course so far even though there has been little time to explore all the options as far as apps and new ICT tools are concerned.  I’m currently taking another course on CLIL methodology and this has taken more time recently.  Nevertheless, I am planning to transfer all Science contents in the Early Years Spanish curriculum into videos and enriching them with Play Posit so that children have access to this information on a visual format at home and can do their on self evaluations.

The children will make their own videos recoding themselves in class.  This is the rubric designed to evaluate this task.

I’ve designed the video with Slide Talk.  If you teach in the Early Years and you are tied to a text book like I am at my school, it gives you the opportunity to actually transfer all the book contents into videos which the kids can watch both in class and at home.  You can also enrich the content of the videos with extra information and the children can also participate with their own pictures, drawings and investigations.  As my voice is not in great shape, I’ve used one of the voices given in Slide Talk, but the children themselves can also do the recording if we want them to participate more and get into producing their own videos.

As I teach Science in bilingual settings, I’m quite used to Bloom’s taxonomy for the cognitive domain (revised version in 2001) as  Bloom is a must when you work with a CLIL approach.  I also use his other taxonomy for the emotional domain, as language acquisition involves emotional aspects, and the taxonomy for the psychomotor domain as I experiment a lot in my lessons and we make and construct things linking our science lessons to technology.

Click on the title to see the project I briefly sketched for this course.  It’s designed for Early years to investigate about animal extinction.  Living near Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas, my Year 1 children chose to investigate about the great owl, the lynx and the vulture.

The project is working well and they are still in the process of producing the video.  This time the groups were chosen at random and they are all mixed ability.  They are used to working cooperatively so getting organised and producing good quality work has been easy.  The kids have also been quite involved emotionally and their parents have collaborated too.  We are all learning and enjoying our learning, crucial for our motivation.

I’ve been using Pinterest for quite sometime but I’d never thought of gathering resources for my Early Years that way. I’ve done a board about dinosaurs for my Year1 Primary so let’s just see how it goes!

I’ve been toying with the idea of flipping my class for a while.  I’ve done a few things already but I have yet to flip most of the material so that my pupils have consistent access from home.  That’s the reason why I’ve embarked on a Flipped Learning course and the reason for this blog.  It’s here where I’ll be posting entries about my learning journey.  The blog will also be a repository of links related to Flipped Learning and other innovative teaching/learning models.
