What it feels like waiting tables

This is the closest I’ve ever come to walking out of the restaurant mid service. I have been stiffed, shouted at, treated like a dog, treated like an inhuman slave, belittled, berated, and wrecked today. I was on my last nerve, i was shaking, i was red, I was angry, all I could think about was how stressed I was.

But. One thing kept me from walking.

There was this little boy named Peyton at one of my tables today. He was probably no more than 7 years old. He looked at my name tag and smiled all huge like. He said “Oh my goodness your name is Taylor! My name is Peyton! We both have names people mistake for girl’s names!” I went on to talk with this little boy about how one of my good friends is named Peyton, and she was probably one of the coolest people I know. That made him smile the happiest little grin I’ve ever seen.

So later he runs out of drink, and i just so happened to have his refill at the time. So as I walked up to the table he turns to his dad and says “I’m thirsty” and quicker than nothin’ I set his drink down, “aw man I heard you were thirsty little man.” He just giggles and laughs and calls me awesome.

Now it’s the end of the meal. Mom and Pop are getting ready to pay, and he reaches into his pocket and pulls out two dollars, I’m at the computer across the room, he comes running up to me and pushes the money to me, not his parents money, his money, with both hands and says “Taylor you looked like you were having a hard day, and I don’t think you get paid enough for how totally cool you are. Here have this.” I looked down at that kid, and I’ve never been so close to breaking down in tears in my entire life.

I doubt anyone who knows you is gonna see this, but Peyton, you made my day, and everything I had to put up with worth it. Thanks.
