there’s three versions of every form of media. canon, fanon, and whatever i’ve made up in my head
Dick: Damian, do you ever wish Bruce and your mom were together?
Damian: Absolutely not. Individually, they have the riches, state secrets, and manipulation tactics to run entire countries. Together, they would be too powerful. It would be world domination. Then, the universe. We would be the inheritors of a bloody, bloody throne, Grayson.
Damian: Plus, I receive more birthday presents this way.

Finally finished this piece after months of reworking. Far from perfect, but I’m glad it’s done. Inspired by the amazing Bruno Redondo, Dan Mora, and especially Dexter Soy.

part three to this ˚ ྀ⟡
The morning fog lay thick across the manor grounds, curling through hedgerows and wrapping the estate in a quiet, damp embrace. You had risen before the household stirred, restless with thoughts you could not banish, thoughts of one sister’s reckless elopement, the other’s uncertain happiness, and, impossibly, the presence of Damian Wayne in your mind. Sleep had deserted you again, chased away by the unrelenting turmoil of your feelings. You pulled your shawl tighter around your shoulders and stepped into the dew-laden paths, boots crunching softly against the wet gravel. Mist clung to the trees and grass, drifting like smoke from some distant fire, and the world seemed to have contracted to the narrow path before you, to the faint shimmer of light filtering through the fog, and to the impossible notion that Damian might appear at any moment. You walked with no particular aim, allowing the rhythm of your steps to occupy your restless mind, though every thought of him made your pulse quicken. Then, as you rounded a bend, he appeared. Tall, commanding, drenched but composed, Damian Wayne emerged from the mist, the early sunlight catching the sharp angles of his face and the dark intensity of his eyes. His movements were precise, measured, deliberate—every step betraying the discipline for which he was known—but there was a vulnerability there, subtle and almost imperceptible, that made your chest tighten. For a heartbeat, your breath caught, your mind struggling to reconcile the man before you with the one you had imagined countless times in your dreams and anxious thoughts.
“Miss…?” His voice cut through the damp air, low, precise, threaded with impatience and the faintest hint of unease.
“Mr. Wayne!” You replied, startled, your voice carrying more shock than composure. The sight of him, standing there in the mist, somehow commanding the very air around him, left you feeling unsteady, though you forced yourself to take a breath and meet his gaze. He closed the distance between you in a few swift strides, his dark eyes scanning you with a mixture of assessment and concern, and for a moment you were caught in their intensity, feeling as though he could see every hidden thought you had tried to suppress. “What are you doing out here so early?” he asked, the clipped formality of his tone not quite masking the tension beneath it.
“I… could not sleep,” you admitted softly, unsure whether to avert your gaze or hold it.
“Nor could I,” he said, his voice low, almost a growl, though there was a faint vulnerability in it, the rare acknowledgment of a restless night. “I have been pacing most of the night.” You felt a flutter in your chest. Damian Wayne rarely admitted any form of weakness, and here he was, revealing the toll of a night spent in thought. It made him all the more compelling, all the more impossible to resist. You wrapped your shawl tighter around you, the dampness of the morning forgotten in the heat of the moment, and struggled to find words. “Mr. Wayne,” you said, your voice softening, “I must… thank you for all you have done for my sisters. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.”
His eyes narrowed slightly, the shadow of irritation or embarrassment flitting across his features. “You know of it,” he said quietly, his tone taut. “I sought to keep it concealed. I acted from duty, not for recognition or gratitude.”
“I am grateful nonetheless,” you replied, your voice steady though your cheeks burned with the intensity of your emotions. “And I wish you to know it.” Damian’s gaze softened fractionally, though his posture remained impeccable, as if the world demanded he remain composed at all times. “I know you are not one to be deceived,” he said after a moment. “I understand you spoke with my aunt last night. It gives me… hope. If your feelings remain as they were last April, speak them now. My affections have not changed. One word from you could silence me forever.”
Your heart thudded painfully in your chest, the fog around you forgotten, the world reduced to only the two of you standing in the dew-slicked grass. You could not speak at first, only stand there and let your thoughts tumble chaotically as you tried to articulate feelings that had grown impossible to contain. Damian’s dark eyes remained fixed upon you, unwavering, commanding, and yet beneath that unyielding exterior was a vulnerability you had never thought to see in him. The words that had been locked inside for months finally pressed against the tip of your tongue, desperate to escape. “If your feelings have shifted…” His voice softened, low, roughened by emotion. “…then know this: you have bewitched me, body and soul. I love you. I love you. I love you. And I wish never to be parted from you, not this day, not ever.”
Tears pricked your eyes. These were the words you had longed to hear, feared to admit to yourself, yet hung between you like a fragile bridge, tremulous and bright in the dim morning light. Silence stretched taut, each of your breaths echoing in the quiet. “Speak,” he urged gently, voice steady and commanding at once, as if he could not bear the uncertainty a moment longer. “Tell me this is not in vain.”
Finally, the words you had kept locked inside for far too long spilled forth, breathless, trembling, full of hope and fear and overwhelming emotion. “I… I am very happy to inform you that not only have my sentiments changed, there are no words that could give me greater joy.” Damian’s hands rose to cup your face, thumbs brushing away the tears that had slipped free, his touch gentle yet intentional. Slowly, deliberately, he leaned forward, and your lips met in a tentative kiss, soft and questioning. Then, with a sudden, shared certainty, it deepened, urgent and consuming, a long-anticipated merging of longing and relief, each movement deliberate and full of unspoken promises. His hands traced your cheeks, tangled in your hair, pulling you closer, grounding you in the reality of the moment. When you finally broke apart for breath, his forehead rested against yours, his voice low and roughened by emotion. “You are… extraordinary,” he said.
“You are infuriating,” you whispered back, laughter and tears mingling in your voice.
“And you,” he replied softly, the rare softness threading through the clipped precision of his tone, “…are gorgeous when you are angry.”
“I’m… covered in rain,” you murmured, breathless, laughter catching in your throat.
“Just… gorgeous,” he said simply, pressing a gentle kiss to your temple before allowing you to step back slightly.
The manor was in an uproar by the time the sun had dipped lower in the sky. Mr. Grayson flitted through the halls like a bird startled from its nest, worry etched into every movement, while your siblings fretted over your absence. You walked with Damian, hand firmly in his, across the wet duckboard plank over the moat. When you entered the house, voices rose in shock. “Darling! Where have you been? We feared something terrible!” your mother exclaimed, face pale with worry. Damian followed silently, hand still entwined with yours, and you lifted your chin with composure. “Mr. Wayne has come to speak with Papa,” you announced. The household froze, every eye turning toward the two of you.
Inside the library, your father’s expression wavered between disbelief and incredulity. “Sweetheart… are you out of your senses? I thought you hated the man,” he said, arms crossed, lips twitching as though trying to suppress a smile. “No, Papa,” you said firmly, though your voice shook slightly with emotion. “He is not the man I believed him to be.” He studied you carefully. “He is wealthy, yes… more than I imagined possible. But will that make you happy?” You took a breath and met his gaze unwaveringly. “Have you no other objection besides your assumption that I am indifferent?” “None,” he admitted, finally allowing the faintest nod. “We all know him to be… difficult, proud, and sometimes insufferable. But if your heart is set…” “It is,” you said, voice rising with conviction, “I love him! It is I who have been blind, who have misjudged him. He is not proud, he is honorable and devoted. He has acted with care and foresight in ways you cannot yet comprehend.” Your father’s face softened, a slow approving smile breaking through the initial shock. “You do love him, then?” “Very much,” you nodded, voice steady though tears threatened. “I cannot believe any man could deserve you,” your father said, “yet I am overruled. You have my consent, wholeheartedly.” You leapt forward, embracing him tightly. “Oh, thank you, Papa!”
Nightfall draped the estate in silver moonlight, soft and luminous as it settled over the rolling lawns and the dark silhouettes of the trees. The grass still held the memory of the day’s rain, cool and fragrant beneath your steps, and the air carried the faint scent of damp earth and crushed leaves. You and Damian walked without speaking, leaving the warmth and light of the manor behind as though it belonged to another life entirely. The house glowed distantly through the trees, its windows like scattered stars, but ahead of you the grounds stretched open and wild, shaped only by stone, wind, and time. Every sound seemed heightened in the quiet, the whisper of fabric, the crunch of gravel beneath your shoes, the low murmur of the night itself breathing around you.
Somewhere beyond the trees, an owl called, its voice echoing hollow and solemn, and you felt Damian slow beside you. His presence was steady, grounding, yet changed. Earlier that day he had been rigid with restraint, his words measured and guarded, but now there was a softness to the way he moved, an awareness of you that made your pulse quicken. Deer emerged from the shadows ahead, pausing as though the two of you were no more than part of the landscape, their dark eyes reflecting the moonlight before they vanished again into the trees. You had the strange, overwhelming sense that the world was watching and then deliberately turning away to grant you privacy.
Damian stopped near a jagged outcrop of rock that rose gently above the lawns, the stone pale and smooth where time had worn it down. He turned toward you, and in the moonlight his expression was unguarded in a way you had never seen before. His eyes lingered on your face, searching, as if committing you to memory. When he spoke, his voice was low and formal, yet unmistakably tender. “Allow me, Mrs. Wayne.”
He extended his hand, palm up, offering rather than commanding. You placed your hand in his, feeling the warmth of his skin against yours, the quiet strength in his grip. He guided you carefully over the uneven stone, his attention entirely fixed on you, as though nothing else in the world demanded it. When you reached the summit, the estate spread out below you in a wash of silver and shadow, the manor lights glowing faintly in the distance. You sat together on the cool rock, shoulders brushing, fingers entwining without thought or hesitation. The night air wrapped around you, and your heart beat fast, steadying only when you leaned slightly closer to him.
“How are you this evening, my dear?” Damian asked, his voice softer now, stripped of its usual edge. The words tightened something in your chest, equal parts warmth and familiarity.
“Very well,” you replied, smiling despite yourself. “Though I wish you would not call me that. My father uses the same endearment for my mother whenever he is particularly cross.”
A quiet breath of amusement escaped him, though his gaze remained intent. “Then tell me what I may call you.”
You considered for a moment, watching the moonlight dance across the lawn below. “My first name, for every day. My Pearl, for Sundays. And Goddess Divine, but only on the rarest of occasions.”
“And when I am cross?” he asked, his tone carefully neutral, as though the question mattered more than he would admit. “Mrs. Wayne?”
You turned toward him fully. “No,” you said firmly. “Only when you are completely and perfectly incandescently happy may you use that name.”
Something softened irreversibly in his expression. He leaned in slowly, as if giving you time to pull away, and pressed a deliberate kiss to your forehead. “Mrs. Wayne.” His lips brushed your nose next, gentler still. “Mrs. Wayne.” Then he kissed you fully, unhurried and reverent, as though the moment deserved nothing less than his complete attention. “Mrs. Wayne.”
You smiled into the kiss, your hand lifting to his cheek, thumb tracing the familiar line of his jaw. When you finally parted, your foreheads rested together, breaths mingling in the cool night air. The weight of misunderstanding, of pride and distance and restraint, seemed to dissolve all at once, leaving only the quiet certainty of what you were to each other.
For a long while, neither of you spoke. The owl called again in the distance, and the trees whispered softly in the wind. Damian’s hand remained laced with yours, his thumb brushing slow circles against your skin, grounding and protective. At last, he pressed another kiss to your temple, lingering there as though the night itself might steal the moment away if he did not hold fast.
In that silver stillness, with the estate sleeping below and the world held at bay, there was only the two of you. No pride left unchallenged. No words left unsaid. Only the calm, enduring truth of being seen, understood, and finally, unmistakably together.
