remember when s4 was like yeah the Byers are El's family and Jonathan and Will call her their sister and then s5 just didn't follow up on any of that

theres surprisingly little fan art for the best character in stranger things
Stonathan shippers after the finale:
also they kinda gave up on the SA/CSA thing huh. Will was assaulted by Henry, who was in turn assaulted by an evil psychic spider. So all we need to do to prevent harm to children is kill all the evil spiders that turn people into rapists. Great allegory everyone đ

They really wanted their fuckass "El disappears in an ambiguous maybe-death and the party fondly remembers her as that girl from the crazy adventure in their youth" ending from s1 and apparently never thought about how that ending fits the story they've been telling for ten years AFTER that first season
because honestly, it's a decent enough ending for s1. She's known these guys for a week; just being free from the lab (even if she never sees this particular group of people again) is a fine enough ending because now she's free to live her own life
in s5, however, El has spent YEARS with everyone. She has a dad, a mom, brothers. Tearing her away from her only support system so she can wander the world on her own isn't freedom, it's isolation, and it's an extremely mean-spirted ending to give to a girl who has been deprived of human connection her entire life
outright saying "the cycle of violence can only be ended by abused children killing themselves" would be a mind-boggingly mean-spirited and cruel ending, but considering that the current caliber of writing for season 5 is "Henry Creel has magic blood that gives people superpowers, including Kali even though she was born in another country" my hopes are not high
ronance with queerplatonic jancy on the side...hmm...
Gotcha so El was never meant to be an actual character with her own wants and dreams, those past 4 seasons were, what? Just fucking around for fun? No, sheâs not a REAL character, and sheâs not worthy of a genuine resolution, sheâs an idea :) like Peter fucking pan or something idk
@givehimthemedicine
Exactly. She was born to die and she lived to suffer. Everything she was and did existed solely to further male characters, especially considering Max doesnât even fucking react to her when she wakes. (And she has next to no relationship with Joyce and Nancy, the other two mains. Thereâs Kali but sheâs so obviously just an extension of El, there to deliver conflict and the emotional gut punch.) She exists to introduce âwhimsyâ to the boys and teach Hopper how to deal with grief. At the end of the show thatâs all she amounts to.
ST 5 FINALE SPOILERS!!! UNDER THE CUT
wdym the one character who all she ever wanted was community and family and love and friends so much so that she risked her life countless times for them is the only one whoâs alone in her endingâŚ.
wdym sheâs always been fated to be alone because of her inherent resistance against conformity and how sheâs always been an outcast even in groups of outcastsâŚ.
WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN HER ENDING IS UP TO INTERPRETATION AND SHE MAY NOT EVEN HAVE GOTTEN THIS ENDING AND SHE COULD ALSO JUST BE DEAD

Yâall we seriously need to talk about Kali, byler aside, what they did to her was the most foul fucking thing ever. Like oh my god itâs been hours and I canât get over it what the actual fuck were they thinking.
I have no real stakes in the mileven vs byler thing but citing the "friends don't lie" line as evidence that mileven broke up during the time skip holds absolutely no weight considering its just a callback to the extremely iconic phrase El says all the time, including once while talking about Mike in s3
imo, the jancy break-up scene wasn't THAT ambiguous. I don't think the characters themselves came away from that scene thinking "well we are no longer in a relationship" but calling it a break-up scene is just the most convenient shorthand for "this is the scene we the writers used to convey that Jonathan and Nancy shouldn't be in a relationship"
Yes, the scene contains an "I love you" but the core of the scene is the two of them going "we dislike fundamental things about each other and the shared trauma we have isn't actually a good foundation for a relationship." It's the same song and dance of "man the two of us are different and that's causing problems!" they've been doing for three seasons, except this time it has a more concrete impact. The "I love you" is more meant to be an "I love you but I can't be with you" kind of thing
and ofc marriage isn't the end goal for every relationship irl, but this is a STORY and marriage/the engagement ring is being used as a symbolic shorthand for a long-term relationship. Jonathan deciding not to go through with the proposal and saying it wouldn't fix things is meant to convey the idea of "carrying on in this relationship wouldn't be healthy for either us."
Their differences aren't irreconcilable and hypothetically they COULD fix their relationship, but that's not the story the writers are interested in telling and I don't think there's anything confusing about that
Idk why it bothered me so much but⌠if weâre being completely real? They would NOT be using Henry/Kaliâs blood. Like, unethical government scientists in the 60âs? Sorry dude, they would be 100% taking his sperm.
And you knoooow the second they realized Kaliâs blood wasnât working theyâd resort to stealing her eggs or, even worse, start using HER as a human incubatorâŚ. Like why are we doing this whole blood transfusion bs I know exactly what those scientists would actually be doing and youâre not fooling meâŚ.

whatâs your opinion on the queerbait stuff about byler being thrown around? i feel like some of it could be true, but i also feel like a lot of it stemmed from headcanons or really insignificant details that bylers made/pointed out, too
Oh yeah, I donât really think it counts as queerbait but I do think it wasnât a completely unreasonable leap for bylers to make, you know?
Like, when I first watched the show I was expecting to ship byler, and when I was finished I just didnât see the vision. So that leads me to think it wasnât queerbait. And I read through every byler proof and even watched the videos up until now because I felt kinda crazy for not seeing it. I kept expecting someone to bring up a point that would convince me, but it never happened (and I love noncanon gay ships believe me).
On the other hand though⌠I know I poke fun at the people that are/were completely convinced bylerâs gonna be endgame, but I actually do kinda get it. (Not from a âI believe this tooâ point of view mind you, but a âI can see you want to believe the best about this showâ one.) Like, I can tell that they really thought that the writers wouldnât do Will dirty like that, that they thought this was a masterfully planned love story dedicated to this traumatized boy. And the duffers never should have let them think that, they should have given you a REAL and a THOUGHTFUL romance for Will, because that is exactly what he deserves!! And I do kinda agree with the people saying they should have shut it down earlier and/or not dragged Willâs crush out like that too. Would it really have been that difficult to put out an instagram post or something that just said âWillâs feelings are canonically unrequitedâ? Plus Will shouldâve gotten a boyfriend that was at least as important as Suzie like what are we doing here.
So, I guess my answer is that it was accidental queerbait that probably stemmed from the writers being chronically heteronormative, if that makes sense? Iâm almost inclined to say they were too stupid to realize what they were creating. Just straight guys writing a queer kid as being the side/support character that theyâll always see him as. đŤŠ
the duffer brothers are really scrambling to squeeze as many supporting characters into the main plot as possible so they can kill off characters who have TECHNICALLY been around for more than one season and pretend it's emotionally moving when Mr. Clarke sacrifices himself for Erica or something
