On the nature of dolls: a doll wears a locket around its neck, brass, plain. It is held fast with a clasp, humble, delicate. The locket depicts the doll's owner, but it does not contain a portrait. Late at night, when it has completed its worship of the floor its lady walks upon, laid its tribute of its time upon the altar of the lady's kitchen, the doll may hold the locket, lift the latch with the gentleness of fingers on the clasp of brassiere, and gaze upon the finest silver, polished to a sheen. It sees, in the mirror, a blinding sliver of its lady, like the thin blade of a imperious sun behind a dark moon's eclipse. Its hair, changed to fit her preferences. Her love is reflected in the way it moves, its every angle is lit up by her lady's brilliant love. It aspires to polish herself, like the mirror, to reflect that love perfectly back at her lady. To, through reflection and service, bring herself into such alignment that, the two mirrors reflecting each other. That translation might beget the genesis of its own love. That one day, she might shine back.
