Trektober prompt day 8: Space Horror

But then Fate/Stay Night, a 20 year old game, has scene direction like displaying the "full moon in the night sky" CG, and zooming in on it so far that the white of the moon completely fills the screen, before transitioning to this CG and panning down so that Berserker's first scene has this really dramatic, effective pan.

Lancer's introduction in the Rin Prologue also zooms in on a normal background before transitioning to an event CG with the camera in the "same spot" so it can then pan right to reveal Lancer perched on a railing.

A lot of visual novels, F/SN included, have even CGs introducing characters presented at an odd dutch angle, typically speaking 45 degrees or so.

This is because they want to show the character in one static shot, without having to pan up or down. But people are tall, and standard monitor displays are wide, so by tilting the subject you can fit more of them in frame at a larger size.

Meanwhile, in Tsukihime (and as you might have seen pointed out in another tumblr post, teehee) this introduction to the character of Hisui? Isn't an introduction CG.

By simply having high resolution backgrounds and sprites, the game can pan the camera and arrange the scene such that its all at a familiar dutch angle, while still being made of reusable sprites and backgrounds!

But we bring this up to say that Fate/Stay Night, being 20 years old, is much more "conventional" in how it frames scenes of standard reusable sprites and backgrounds.

This layout is much closer to what Western devs and players expect from a visual novel. A background at a fixed distance, one or two characters in their usual poses.

And even then, F/SN has three sets of sprites for each character, letting them stand at far, middle, or close distance from the camera (unlike Tsukihime, the sprites aren't high resolution enough to manually zoom and scale them in, so they're stored at three different sizes), which is something Western VNs don't always remember is an option.

And even then, this thing they forget is an option is visual novel display technology that's over twenty entire years old.
