Leon Busby 25, Youth Mental Health Case Manager, Court Appointed Special Advocate. //warning if I reply without a gif it means I can't get to the library and am thus on mobile.
Bucky looks over at the kid, swirling a French fry around in the puddle of ketchup on his plate. âUse Google Docs next time,â he advises, popping the fry casually into his mouth. âEven if you lose the WiFi or whatever, you wonât lose whatever youâre typing. And you can access it anywhere.â He swirls another fry through ketchup. âI have my students use it to write their essays, so I can help them out when they need it â thereâs a sharing function, too, where I can edit their work and stuff.â
"Thanks. I used to use it in college actually. I know for me and my professors it was best invention in exsistence. I'm kinda hesitant to use anything it for the sharing function though in this case." he knew that what he has written down is unimportant to most, but he still wouldn't feel right putting his kid's information in such an unsecured space. "Also when I turn this in I have fill in specific sections like filling out a form so the only way to have it unedited is to have it on the website."

BART HAD BEEN MINDING HIS OWN BUSINESS, eating a couple burgers by himself. He had a long shift today, a busy one at that. Scratch that, it was always busy when it came to working at Starbucks in the middle of New York. There was always an incoming wave of people wanting a new drink made. It wasnât something he minded though since he liked to be kept busy. If he got bored or staying in one spot for too long he loses focus, canât sit still. It brings forward an urge for him to RUN somewhere. He finished off his food, and was checking his text messages when he heard someone at the table next to his whispering to himself. He put his phone down, and decided to say something. Bart never thought before speaking often, so this was no exception. âAre you alright? Do you need help, dude?â
"Um, no. I'm fine, just a small interenet problem that caused a slight work problem." Leon could never whisper worth crap but he thought he was being quiet enough and that the noise of restaurant would drown him out. Apparently not. He looked up at the other for a few seconds before looking down at his portable WiFi trying to see what went wrong while mouthing to himself as to why he even used the damn thing "I'm sorry if I bothered you or anything, I though no one would actually be able to hear me."
âIt wasnât exactly a vacation. Since taking up the position here in New York, I had to attend these..â He threw up air quotes. âMandatory trainings. I come back to a shit load of absolute crap. I smelled it from the airport honestly.â He sighed and tossed another file onto his desk. âThis is ridiculous.â
âWell, some of those trainings are meant to help you with your jobâ says the kid who knows jack shit about being a police officer and clearly wasnât even apart of the conversation. âNot that you, dont already know how to do your job itâs just I mean it doesnât matter how long youâve been a cop, thereâs always something new to learn.â God Leon keep digginâ that hole! God, heâs got to learn to keep his mouth shut.
Bruce was starting to miss Gotham. The city wasnât perfect, it was overrun with gangsters, thieves, dealers. hired assassins and murderous clowns. But in Gotham he had purpose. Gotham needed Batman, but New York City? New York City didnât need him, not yet. He may have put half of the deranged of his cityâs criminals in Arkham Asylum, and once it closed the âsaneâ prisoners ended up here which, sure thatâs why he was here. But the governmentâs involvement in a heroes work, and the villains, called for Batman to take a couple steps back. Batman was above the law, but this one seemed fragile. Eyes were everywhere and the last thing Bruce needed was the government asking the CEO of Wayne Enterprises, questions. When he wasnât even from this city. Standing there in a t-shirt and pants, he needed something familiar to him. His mind went straight to his son, Damian. Robin, at least in Gotham. Whereâs Damian? He came to the city with him, where was he now? And what about the rest of his kids? He thought. Werenât two of them interns here? With him? He spoke to the closest person to him.â Excuse me, have you seen a boy with green eyes, dark hair, heâs about â this short, with a little attitude problem? Or maybe youâve seen a couple of guys all with all dark hair and blue eyes? How about a girl with blonde hair, blue eyes-â He started describing Stephanie.
Leon, for once, felt like he could just breathe. He was on schedule. His paperwork was caught up and lunch without work was an actual possiblity. Hell, he could probably try that new, new to him for all he knows it could have been there for years, thai restaurant a whole two blocks away from work. This is what he has to look forward to in terms of excitement. Great. He was halfway down the block looking for the correct way to that restaurant because honestly he only passed it once and hopefully itâs something he can actually afford, when he felt a slight tug on his arm. He just stood there politely and let the man run through his questions before calmly interupting. The man didnât seem to be panicing but near there and honestly who wouldnât be if you lost someone in this city, even if youâre from here. So he decided to put on what he calls his âcase manager maskâ âNo sir,â before internally wincing, Leon this dude is from up North, people from up north donât like being called sir or ma'am. âI havenât seen the the people you are describing.â He paused for a bit thinking over his next question because yeah itâs his lunch break, but this is a very big city and getting lost here is scary even for adults âI can help you look if you want?â So much for a break.
âExcuse me,â Diana calls, waving to catch the nearest passerbyâs attention. When someone actually stops, she lifts up both of her hands, a chilled bottled water clutched in each. âWould you like one? It seems the vending machine gave me a two-for-one special today.â
Leon was rather in a hurry, he was fifty different levels of off schedule and he was 30 minutes late to a home visit. How does he still have a job right now, Leon shape it up! He was five seconds from breaking into a run when he heard a woman trying to get someoneâs attention, knowing how it feels to be trying to get some help in this city and being the sweet southern boy that he knows he is he stops âuhâ he falters for a second before bouncing back with a large genuine smile on his face âWhy yes! Thank you, itâs going to be a long day for me and the gesture is much appreciated!â The was a form a kindness he hadnât really recieved since moving here.

In retrospect, signing up to teach summer school classes wasnât the smartest idea. It wasnât that Bucky didnât like his job â he did, even more than he thought he would â but summer school kids seemed to either care too little, or too much. Maybe (well, most likely) his frustration was leading him to make unfair generalizations, but after flipping through the stack of papers in front of him, Bucky was finding it a little hard to be gracious. He put his pen down with a little too much force, his metal fingers shattering the casing and causing ink to spread all over his notebook. âDamn it,â he grumbled, unaware that someone was looking at him.
Leon was just sipping on a capaccino trying to transcribe his written notes onto the online documentation. He decided to look up to adjust his eyes a bit because dear god how long had he been staring between a piece of paper and a computer screen? Was his coffee even hot anymore? Did he need new glasses or was his eyesight just blurry from staring at a screen for so long? During his look scan of the room his eyes ran over someone having a slight mishap with their pen and what looked like a notebook. Having empathy for having to look at what he is assuming is paperwork, even though no Leon you shouldnât just assume things, and having been raised with that famous southern hospitality he decided to grab a spare notebook out of his bag, because his job is notes on notes on notes and decided to walk over to the guy and tappinhg him on the shoulder. âHi, noticed you had a slight issue and knowing how annoying it is to buy these over and over because hoo boy does it add up! I have a spare and just wondered if giving it to you would provide any kind of help. I know it wonât replace what you lost, but at least you donât have to buy a whole new one?â
âNew York is so loud..â Jaime sighs and slumps into his chair, clutching a coffee close to his chest. Heâs barely even arrived here and he already misses El Paso. âRemind me again why moving to this city was a good idea?â
"The only thing I can do is agree that yes New York is extremely loud considering I don't know you." Leon thinks for a moment that he might have over stepped his bounds, he's learned overtime that a lot of people in New York don't like being talked to by random strangers...especially ones with zero filters. Well it's already out of his mouth anyway, might as well introduce himself. "I'm Leon by the way, so I'm guessing you're either from a small town or city too? From what I just heard."
Even in one of those rare moments when Leon has time to have lunch outside his office, it involves paperwork. He is currently trying to simultaneously eat his fries and type out a report for his supervisor going over how far he and one of his 14 year old clients have come on him actually attending all of his classes. He only had 3 absences that week which is remarkable progress.
Leon is so proud. So proud in fact that he didnât notice the state issue portable WiFi on his laptop go out until he hit submit, losing pretty much everything he typed. In complete annoyance because this is the third time something like this has happened Leon just put his head into his hand holding back the urge to chuck something across the crowded restaurant. Only because getting arrested because of an angry outburst would probably be hypocritical to what heâs trying to teach his kids. Before getting a hold on himself, he tries to ground himself by whispering âItâs okay. You have most of it written down, you donât have to start from scratch. Itâs not like itâs due in an hour or anything!â Itâs totaly due in an hour.
Leon is a Case Manager for youth up to the age of 18 with Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse challenges. His job as a case manager is to provide emotional support to both the youth and their families, help the youth with building skills such as budgeting, coping skills, or self-care. He also can link youth to other resources such as LGBT support groups, free/low cost tutoring programs, etc.
He is also what is called a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), his job as a CASA is to see that the needs of abused children and/or neglected children. By way of working with attorneys to represent the best interests of the child, having regular visitations to childâs placement, providing detailed documentation, and appearing to court to testify or answer questions when necessary. This is purely a volunteer position.
Leon chose the route of social worker by accident, he originally wanted to work as a psychologist in order to help out youthâs like his younger brother who had issues with anger and lashing out. His younger brother had intermittent explosive disorder and major depression starting at the age of 6.
Seeing how this affected his ability to maneuver through school, work and other social situations as well as leading to their separation when Leon was 14 he decided pursue a degree in psychology. It wasnât until the middle of his freshman year when he spent some time on the phone to his brother did he learn more about mental health case managers. Learning how they were able to help his brother Leon felt he could do better providing more hands on help.
When it came time to declare his major he decided to look into Social Work. Since he and his brother spent their teen years in the foster care system in Georgia Leon was hesitant about going into Social Work, though he was lucky to stay in one home for the last 3 years of high school he never had a single case worker long enough to make any difference or in his eyes care about him. It wasnât until his brother talked about the good his case manager was doing for him did he decide to take that leap.
Leon was raised by his biological grandmother in Savannah, Georgia from the ages of 4-14. His younger brother moved in when he was 8. Living with her was rather unpredictable. She had some problems with anger. Sometimes she was loving and caring, but sometimes her moods would shift, a shift he would never see coming, and her yelling would get scary. Not abusive, but scary. He viewed this as healthy and normal. It wasnât causing any damage in his eyes, though teachers and others students did notice that he would panic more if someone yelled in real or mock anger than other peers. This did not warrant any kind of inspection.
Things continued until the age of 12 when money had to get very tight. Rent on their lot went up, her wages on one job went down while the other completely disappeared, and it was getting harder and harder for the bills to get paid. His brother had started lashing out. The stress from this caused his grandmother to get angrier more often, to the point where every little mistake the boys made was worth a verbal lashing and things went from just angry to discipline to what Leon was unable at the time and for a long time after recognize as verbal abuse. She never hit them, but she didnât need to.
At the age of 14 lashed out physically for the first and last time causing her to lose both boys. They went from a group home, to a foster home, before Leon was placed in a foster home in Midway while his brother was bounced around from home to home until going to a group home in Macon.
Their past situation is the reason he decided to become a CASA, his CASA was one of the few people in his case that he felt actually cared and was there for him from the beginning.
He is still in contact with his most recent foster mother.
Leon identifies as gay.
He has a slight almost imperceptible southern accent. Itâs not easy for him to get offended but there is not just one southern accent. There is not just one Georgian accent. Itâs called a Low Country accent thank you very much. Though thatâs the only southern thing that bothers him, if youâve hit friend territory make all the redneck jokes you want. Also, no, Savannah is not hickville. He is not someone who is âproudâ to be from the south, but heâs pretty protective over this one city, itâs his hometown, the rest of the south be damned.
He rather misses Savannah, but he felt rather trapped there and wanted to try somewhere new. Hence New York.
Growing up Leon was a rather quiet kid, but around his senior year of high school he started to open up and flourish. By the time he was a junior in college he wasnât exactly considered someone who partied a lot, but he wasnât exactly quiet either. Always friendly and takes initiative in social situations to make others feel welcome.
He is now rather loud and has always been energetic able to go on about 3-4 hours of sleep at night, and tends to be a little bombastic. Kinda obnoxious, but he doesnât see it that way.
Enjoys doing things for a reaction, as a teen he died his hair, for a reaction, gauged his ears, for a reaction. He loves his foster mother and practically worships the ground she walks on, but she is very conservative and easy to provoke.
He is rather easy to talk to and is a good listener. He doesnât always know how to say the right things, but he tries to do what he thinks will help their situation.
Though he has to be he really doesnât like being called Mr. Busby or Leon by his consumers. It makes him feel uncomfortable as though he has reached adulthood even though he feels he definitely has not.
He loves scifi and fantasy but doesnât have much time outside of his work. Most of his time is spent doing paperwork, making home visits, speaking in court, and dealing with crises. He loves his work but at times it can be very taxing and time consuming, especially in New York.
