The scent of Tahitian Orchid bath suds was messing with the demogorgon's pointed sense of smell; that part of Mike’s plan was working. The part that wasn’t working was that he and Will were cramped tightly under the water, and the monster still wasn’t leaving.

Calgon could take away the scent of blood, but it was almost like the creature sensed the hunger under the surface, competing with its own. The demo had no concept of humans needing to breathe, but still, it waited for something.

Mike and Will were facing each other, eyes burning from soap, starting to tremble. The demo’s drool was raining down in heavy, unbroken strands all the way to the bottom. They squeezed each other’s hands, giving each other the strength to last a little bit longer. 

Mike and Will brought each other’s knuckles to their lips, and the demo moved on.
